This past weekend Colorado's own Pretty Lights (comprised of producer Derek Vincent Smith and drummer Cory Eberhard) sold out three jam-packed nights of high energy, visually stimulating shows in their home state.
Out supporting the release of their new album, Passing By Behind Your Eyes (released 10.06.09), Smith and Eberhard kicked off a month-long tour at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, playing to an energetic crowd of college students. The duo wrapped up the weekend in front of a capacity crowd at Denver’s Ogden Theatre, where people out front were offering up to $150 for a ticket ($20 face value) – a testament to how fast this young producer is making his mark.
Touring constantly, and hitting up most of the major music festivals, it is no surprise that Pretty Lights is becoming more popular than ever. They treat their audiences to an intense, organic sound that grabs the crowd’s …READ MORE

CONCERT REVIEW: Sound Tribe Sector 9 – Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Wed Sep 17, 2008
Story and photos by Big Croppa
Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) may be based out of Santa Cruz, California, but if you live in Colorado, you may think that they are the local band that made it big. STS9 is notorious for playing sold out multi-day strings of shows in the Denver area. This is a testament to their music and fan base here in Colorado. That fan base was, once again, treated to an extended weekend of shows beginning Thursday September 4th at the Boulder Theatre and continuing Friday and Saturday at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre. As usual, STS9 gave their fans a different vibe and sound to groove out to at each show.
The Red Rocks shows celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first ever live music event held at the historic venue and offered proof that STS9 has certainly progressed as a band and made their mark. Many bands could have played the historic …READ MORE

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Mile High Music Festival, Denver, CO – July 19-20
Wed Jul 30, 2008

5,280 feet is pretty high, but not as high as the 95,000 music hungry people that attended Denver’s first annual Mile High Music Festival. The inaugural two-day event hosted 43 bands spanning over 24 soccer fields, three outdoor stages, and two tent stages (each the size of a football field).
Denver has been a hotbed of music for decades – home to Red Rocks, The Fillmore Auditorium, and many small, intimate venues – yet the city has never had its own music festival. Now, thanks to music promoter Chuck Morris, it finally does.
The main objective of the Mile High Music Festival was to celebrate Colorado’s diverse music scene without excessively impacting the environment. Free upgraded parking …READ MORE

CONCERT REVIEW: Widespread Panic – Kings of Red Rocks
Wed Jul 2, 2008
Story and photos by Big Croppa
Georgia based jammers, Widespread Panic, officially became the kings of Red Rocks Amphitheatre by extending their record streak of sold out shows at the venue, which now stands at 32 following a recent three-show engagement, and spans 12 years. This unprecedented streak of sellouts began on May 31, 1996.
The band actually broke the record last summer with another sellout weekend, but was not officially recognized until this year, when Red Rocks officials honored the band with a special presentation and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper proclaimed Friday June, 27 “Widespread Panic Day” in the city.
Willie Nelson is next on the list with 27 sold out shows, followed by The Grateful Dead (22) and a long list of other great musicians that follow in the teens. Widespread shows no signs of slowing down …READ MORE

THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO GROWROOMS

Choosing Your Space
The best growrooms begin with a well thought-out plan. Most indoor growers benefit by carefully designing their growrooms and writing their plans down on paper. Maintaining an indoor growroom allows you great influence over how well your plants perform. With the right planning, preparation and execution, you can use your chosen space to harvest your own tasty buds three, four and even five times more often than Earth’s seasonal nature allows.
Marijuana is grown in all kinds of places: perfectly built greenhouses, closets, basements or spare bedrooms. Every place has its advantages and drawbacks, but some simple guidelines should be followed when selecting a space.
1. You don’t want any light to enter or leave the room.
The brightness, and especially the color, of the lamps used can draw your neighbors’ attention. From the …READ MOREtags: 209 « add a comment

Strong, healthy mother plants are the cornerstone of any successful grow operation. The ability to consistently regenerate top-quality clones is essential to any garden’s productivity. While almost all vegging plants can provide a few choice clones from their upper branches, a well-groomed mom will provide you with dozens of choice cuttings from multiple branches.
To get a good mother plant, you’ll need to select one special seedling or female clone to pamper. With a heavily noded plant, you can create a bonsai-like mother that will yield healthy clones for numerous gardens. Most people don’t realize that one of the most important keys to creating a successful mother plant is to top the rooted clone early. This forces the plant to increase its primary root system, providing it with the solid foundation it will need to become a small tree. Also, topping the young mom frequently lets young branches grow into …READ MOREtags: 79 « add a comment

There’s a Las Vegas that exists beyond the Strip, beyond Fremont Street, and beyond the suburbs, but I was always warned not to go there. If you follow someone into that desert, only one of you will return. And it’s probably not going to be you.
Yes, but the Sam Boyd Stadium is not in the desert; it’s in some weird buffer belt between. One direction it’s all red rocks and rugged mountains, the other you see the light that shoots out the top of the Luxor like an advertisement to God. Yo dude, down here! All you can eat prime rib!
The Grateful Dead used to own this stadium. When they pulled into Sam Boyd, residents of Sin City would flee to New York, Miami or Honolulu. Gamblers and gangsters and drunks they could deal with, showgirls and circus freaks they could handle, but Deadheads were another story altogether.
In the ’90s, when Phish came …READ MOREtags: 2 « add a comment
