LIVE REVIEW: Perpetually Groovin'

"Jam" music has always had a dichotomous soul. It can aim for the booty and get you moving, or it can aim for the brain and massage the sweet spot behind your forehead. Many a jam-band can make a room full of hippies dance, but not many can get people to just stare at the sound. The best bands can play you both ways and last Friday night, Oct. 8 at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC, I had the pleasure of seeing the Georgia-based quartet Perpetual Groove do just that.
Perpetual Groove recently launched a tour in conjunction with the release of their second CD, All This Everything. I was intrigued by their booking strategy, playing only Friday and Saturday nights so their dedicated fans can easily see the whole tour. Even more intriguing was the fact that it is thought to be the first tour ever in Dolby SurroundSound 5.1. If you went to Bonnaroo, you would do crazy things like run out of gas for the first time in your life, not because you’re a complete stoner, but because your gas gauge broke. Your plan to do this, that, and the other thing with her, him, and another gang of hippies you know would fly right out the window as soon as you finally get to a parking space, hopefully still under your own power. You would immediately make a bunch of new super best friends anyway amongst all your new temporary neighbors.
The first time you go up to the main stage, you would just slowly hone in on the loud, groovy music and pay little attention to where you started because it’s just a show after all—how can you get lost between a parking lot and a concert?
