Show mom you care with this delicious, delicately flavored cake that’s infused with cannabis and delivered to her doorstep.

Honor your marijuana-loving mama on Mother’s Day (May 13) with a homemade cake that’s a much more original and heartfelt gift than flowers or store-bought chocolates!

In this modern era when so many of us live far from our extended families, it’s more important than ever to honor these family ties, especially in times of need.

A friend whose mother is undergoing chemotherapy shared this handy recipe, originally from the extensive compendium Baking for All Occasions by Flo Braker. It’s designed to be sturdy and dense enough to survive shipping, perfect for a long-distance surprise!

  • Time-Warp Tamales

    Sat May 5, 2012

    -

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with this traditional dish from The Official HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cookbook, spiked with cannabis not once but twice!

An immensely popular Latin street food, the tamale has been a peasant food in South American since 5000 B.C. Legend has it that the ancient Mayans would bring these portable packets of deliciousness with them into battle. Nowadays, each culture from El Salvador to Argentina, Cuba to Mexico, makes their tamales a little differently. In this stoner twist on a classic recipe, just enough marijuana has been added to give the dish a relaxing finish. Perfected by chef Bliss, one of the pioneers of modern cannabis cookery, these tamales are stuffed with pasilla chiles, cheddar cheese and chicken. The time-warp effect of this tamale is achieved by adding Cannabutter to the filling and hash to the masa, although …READ MORE

  • Review: Archers of Loaf in New York City

    Thu May 3, 2012

    -

    By Mike Hughes

Photo & Videos by Jen Bernstein

After reuniting for a single show in Carrboro, NC in early 2011, Archers of Loaf kicked off a full-scale reunion tour that summer. The band unofficially broke up back in 1998, so faithful Loaf fans were overjoyed to have the band back and touring in support of Merge Records remastering and reissuing their four studio albums.

Certain Archers fans were unable to attend any of the 2011 reunion tour shows due to conflicting Medical Cannabis Cups. Which explains why certain Archers fans were elated when it was announced that the band would be touring again in 2012 – and the two New York dates fell safely after the Denver Cup and before the San Fran Cup.

The first New York show took place at Manhattan's Bowery Ballroom on Thursday, April 26. Frontman …READ MORE

  • Know The Deal Oaksterdam

    Mon Apr 16, 2012

    -
I still cannot get my head around why Oaksterdam got raided. It makes no sense to me. Oaksterdam University was founded and run by Richard Lee, a medical marijuana patient, who happens to be in a wheelchair. He turned a rundown forgotten downtown area into a small utopian business center that generated huge amounts of money for the city of Oakland.

He is also the man that put together Prop. 19, that almost had cannabis completely legal for Californians in 2010 (53.5% No vs 46.5 % Yes). What was the task force meeting like before the Feds went to raid Mr. Lee,  “Ok regulators, mount up! There is this guy in a wheelchair, who’s legal business is paying over a million dollars to the state in taxes during one of the worst financial collapses of our lifetimes. Lets go scare the shit out of him.”

Were these agents drunk? That is like if you were really hungry and you wanted a hamburger, so you …READ MORE

  • The Infamous "Weed Dinner"

    Thu Apr 5, 2012

    -

This past April Fools' Day, I journeyed to a top secret cannabis feast thrown by chefs Laurent Quenioux and Starry Kitchen's Thi Tran.

Getting an invite required filling out a "personality survey" (Tran says "No D-bags allowed!") as well as the use of code words, nondescript meeting spots, and secret shuttles tagged with the sign "Grammar Rodeo."

A fun crowd of LA's finest foodies, journalists and pot-lovers assembled, and we mingled over cannabis-infused cocktails from Daniel K. Nelson, mixologist from The Writer's Room. He served up an original concoction called Cho Son One, which is Ganja Sesame oil on perilla leaf,  Korean pear, and American moonshine.

The menu promised a plethora of delights over the eight course meal.

  • Hail To The Lighter Thief

    Mon Mar 26, 2012

    -
In the world of smoking, lighter stealing is a major faux pas (that is French for “dick-move”). There are super pros... for some people, it is second nature to steal your lighter. It is just one of those things that is omni-present amongst smoking circles, from bong rippers to cigar aficionados, the threat of your lighter being mindlessly taken is real.

Through deep mathematical analysis, and spacing out at picture of an American Indian that is on my cork board, I have come up with a fool proof equation on how you can always predict who will win a presidential election. Look at the two candidates and then ask yourself, “Which one of these people would pocket my lighter if they were hanging out at a party.”

Here is proof – lets look at last 10 presidential elections:

1972 Richard Nixon vs George McGovern

Tricky Dick has your …READ MORE

  • Green Ganja Garlic Smashed Potatoes

    Thu Mar 15, 2012

    -

What started as a Catholic holiday honoring St. Patrick has morphed into an international excuse to get drunk as a skunk in the name of celebrating Irish culture. Too bad the Emerald Isle doesn’t have more in common with the Emerald Triangle! I say, along with “the wearing of the green,” let’s do some “smoking of the green.” In the meantime, these smashed potatoes are a great way to ingest a heaping dose of green Cannabudder that will also help soak up all of that green beer. You can also use these green potatoes to top a shepherd’s pie, the traditional Irish dish. And best of all, nobody on St. Patrick’s day will notice that you look a little stoned–they’ll be too drunk.

  • Jam in the Dam – Night One

    Thu Mar 15, 2012

    -

After a few days of exploring Amsterdam, too many coffee shops and a couple museums... we were finally treated to the music we traveled across the ocean for: five US jam bands, each taking one of two stages to rock the Melkweg for three consecutive nights as part of Jam in the Dam.

And jam they did. Lotus opened the festival on the Max Hall stage in the big room as fans filtered in and greeted one another with high-fives, hugs, and kisses on both cheeks. Electronica and deep bass waves combined with wafts of smoke openly filled the air while the relaxed and chill opening night vibes spilled out into the Melkweg café – a popular eatery attached to the venue and run by Mary Jo from Wisconsin. Plenty were already in the mood to start to groove.

Meanwhile during Lotus's set, Keller Williams took the Old Hall stage in the smaller, more intimately-sized room by …READ MORE

  • The Marijuana-logues March 2 & 3, Reno, NV

    Wed Feb 29, 2012

    -

    Hello HT Readers,

As my globetrotting green experience continues with HIGH TIMES Magazine LIVE events, the California Bear devours jars of medicated honey, kind kindness and golden sunshine. Slow down, I may still be feeling the effects of the Los Angeles Medical Cannabis Cup.

I had a killer time hosting the awards show, thanks for the laughs and good times. After the show in LA, I jumped a train to San Francisco, and a nice brownie turned the train ride into a real life “Yellow Submarine” that stretched time and distance into one lucid sleeping transport.

I got to do shows in Oakland and SF over the last two weeks. Tonight, I am in Lake Tahoe. I have a day off before a Stand-Up show at The Crystal Bay Casino. I am getting hooked up with ski passes and rentals tomorrow, watch out Tahoe, you are about to bare witness to the funkiest snow-plow of all time. …READ MORE

  • Chicken and Andouille Ganja Gumbo

    Tue Feb 21, 2012

    -

The mash-up of Caribbean island, African, and French Canadian refugee culture in New Orleans resulted in the birth of the modern counterculture in the city’s melting pot Conga Square, not to mention centuries of amazing food and great music. Reefer flourished amongst the jazzmen and bohemians of New Orleans long before the rest of the country, and those pot-loving jazz cats surely had a healthy appetite for the city’s legendary cuisine! This gumbo recipe from our friend Deep Fry Dave melts all these influences together into a truly unique and unforgettable dish.

Gumbo is actually a Caribbean term for okra, a primary ingredient in most versions of the dish. Making a true Cajun-style gumbo absolutely requires celery, onion, bell pepper, and garlic.

A note on the ingredients: If you can find fresh okra, do so, but okra gets a little slippery when you cut it, so be careful. As for the sausage, Deep …READ MORE
