Out in the serene SoCal desert with a jar of crystallized OG nugs and a weekend of stoner music hosted by none other than Cheech and Chong—what more could two ladies from High Times ask for? That was the Cypress Hill Smoke-Out Festival on October 23-25 that I attended with Natasha, HT Managing Editor.
Late the Thursday night before, I rolled up a couple of road trip doobies and cruised on to the airport to scoop up the lovely Natasha who had asked me to join her at the festival, taking place in the beautiful mountainous land of San Bernadino, California.
We got in to town late, settled into our room with a welcome bowl on the patio, and made our way across the street to the IHOP that we will come to be well acquainted with for the next couple days. After devouring a plate of moistly delicious pumpkin pancakes, we picked up a little wine and found a mellow peace of mind before the crazy weekend festivities began!
Friday started out the weekend right with beautiful sunny weather, and for us, champagne in the Lounge and a joint in the grass! We schmoozed around, said high to old friends and met new friends, who conveniently always seemed to find us when they were about to smoke a blunt! (Thanks, guys!)
Saturday was the musical day I was most excited about! I made sure to get there in time to groove to The Dirty Heads, who happen to be a kick-ass So-Cal reggae-style band that I’ve been jamming to for a while now and was happy to finally see! We danced to their beats as the sun blazed down upon us.
The music all day was awesome, from Kottonmouth Kings to Cypress Hill, from Redman to Method Man, from Deftones to Pennywise and Bad Brains. There was a variety of old-skool music, but I must say my biggest excitement was seeing Sublime play (without Bradley Nowell, of course).
Sublime is one of those bands you’ve listened to since you’re a kid and now you see about a zillion different cover bands doing their stuff, so experiencing them live was incredibly satisfying for the soul!
One of the most memorable happenings for me—and all of us younger ones—was to being able to see Cheech and Chong perform together live for the first time. Cheech did his classic skit in the pink tutu and the crowd went wild! And Tommy Chong was gracious enough to bring Natasha and me on stage to say a few words of wisdom and weed to the 10,000 people crowded around the plaza who all roared with approval when we even mentioned High Times.
This was a pretty incredible event, placed perfectly in the middle of the mountains under a surge of sunshine, surrounded by smoke, and left with once-in-a-lifetime memories. We’ll be telling our grandkids about this one! Ha!
