  • Roast Beast

    Fri Aug 28, 2009

    -

On a hot, muggy summer evening in the Lower East Side, the Bonghitters waited…and waited for their opponents to show up. They began to wonder whether the Daily Beast got lost? Considering the final score, the Beasties likely wish they had never found their way to the field. The last time the teams faced off, the Hitters put up 26 runs on them. This time they only gave up nine, but did not score themselves.

The Green Machine got it going early, scoring quickly in the 1st inning. Bean hit a double to right center, and Darren knocked him in for the first run of the game. In the second inning Damion beat out an infield hit and tagged up to second base. Jeremy scalded a line drive for an RBI. They pushed across one more for a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd with two outs, the Beast smacked a triple. But a weak pop-up ended the threat, stranding the runner. The Bonghitters broke out in the 4th inning with a two-out rally that loaded …READ MORE

  • HT On The Radio

    Wed Aug 5, 2009

    -

“Make sure they are on the grass”. That’s what the Ump told Dan our stand-in manager for the day. Don’t worry Blue, we were! The streaking Bonghitters beat up WNYC last night with another double digit inning. This time, 13 runs in the 4th . They put up 17 runs against The Daily beast two games ago.

Dan mixed up the lineup, and it produced quickly as Abe got on and was knocked in by Damion for the first run of the game. The Hitters loaded the bases, but only scored the one run. The defense held for another inning until the 4th when the flood gates opened up.

There where hits from many different Bonghitters. The ones coming from Halby, (single 2RBI’s) and Damion (Double 2RBI) Dan chipped in with a 2 run bloop single. Dan went airborne in a collision at the plate and was safe. He really got some air! The catcher was way up the line blocking the path of the runner without the ball.

  • Mother Nature Turns Out the Lights, Bonghitters Settle for Tie

    Fri Jul 17, 2009

Vanity Fair was ready to make a better show of it this time around as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning. The last time we met, they whined about our players and called them Bongringers.

It was amusing, but terribly inaccurate, to say the least.

This game was an interesting test for the Bonghitters. It was the day after an emotional victory over their archenemies BuisnessWeek. Would there be a hangover? As it turns out, not really. The Bonghitters scored in the first, second and third innings. In the third they loaded the bases and chipped off four runs to take the lead. But in the bottom frame, the Veefers came back with …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Take Suits to the Cleaners

    Wed Jul 15, 2009

    -

It got a little chippy on the field tonight as the Green Machine defeated their arch-rivals, BusinessWeek in extra innings. There were a few strange antics by some of the suits: a runner at third base tried to interfere with some bush-league nonsense (didn’t work). And another suit who was called out at second refused to leave the base. (Bad day at the office perhaps?)

BusinessWeek got on the board early with two runs in the first and one in the second. Crisp defense by both teams ruled the evening, and in the top of the fifth, Abe made a diving stab to start an unassisted double play. In the bottom of the frame, Jeremy had an RBI, and Rosenthal hit a sac fly to pull within one run.

  • Green Machine Grinds DC Comics to a Pulp

    Sat Jul 11, 2009

    -

DC showed up for our rematch wearing some pretty nice threads—new jerseys with an image on the back of Batman swinging a bat and smacking a softball. Geek alert. Guilty.

The game started slowly, with no runs in the first three innings. In the fourth, a rally spliff was spoken about (Kryptonite Weed), and just like that, the Bonghitters hung a crooked number (4) on the board!

The fifth inning brought more of the same as the hit parade continued with four more runs and then two more in the sixth. Leading 10-1, the after-party started early. DC showed little of the fight they had in our previous meeting, which was surprising considering the level of talent on the team.

  • Bonghitters Shot by DC Bullets

    Sat Jun 27, 2009

The DC Bullets Jolted the Bonghitters with an upset victory 5-4.  After leading by three runs in the top of the 2nd, the Bonghitters put it into cruise control. Credit the Bullets for playing tough. They showed some grit, plating one run in the bottom of the 2nd, and three more in the 3rd to take the lead.

Jeremy tied the game in the 5th with a blast to right center for a HR. However, the DC pitcher settled down and retired the next three. The Bullets came back with a triple and a sac fly to take the lead, and as it turned out, the game. A rematch comes in just two weeks.

Green Machine had better not take them for granted again.

  • College Humor Flakes out. Bonghitters take it out on "Parkies"

    Fri Jun 26, 2009

The Bonghitters third game was supposed to be against College Humor in a nonleague affair. Unfortunately, they chose not to show. Was it a joke? Maybe they are weather wimps (it had threatened to rain but ended up being a gorgeous evening) or maybe they heard about our legendary prowess and didn’t want to get their butts kicked.

So there we were on the Great Lawn with a field to play on and no team to play against. We decided to have a split squad game “Team A” vs. “Not Team A” the victory going to Team A, 8-4. This was fun, but we like playing other teams so we went in search of some “Parkies” to challenge. “Parkies” are people who play pickup softball in Central Park and assemble random players for a team. This time the “Parkies” came in the form of a team of lawyers from the firm Dewey, Cheatum and Howe (maybe not their real name). We were all impressed with the badass chick playing third base. She made …READ MORE

  • Green Machine Reaps Benefits From 4th Inning Harvest June 1st, 2009

    Fri Jun 12, 2009

    -

The second game on the Bonghitters schedule was against our old friends, the “Veefers” from Vanity Fair. On a sunny but slightly chilly evening our heroes continued their quest to recapture the NYMSL crown after losing it in last year’s championship game.

The Bonghitters scattered several hits in the early innings, but did not manage any runs.

It was a pitcher’s duel early on as Rundown Rick did his thing in a shutout as well as crisp defense from the entire team. No errors! The score remained knotted at nothing until the bottom of the fourth. An extra base hit from John “the mouth” F helped push across the first run and …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Undress GQ In Season Opener

    Mon May 25, 2009

At last the 2009 softball season is finally upon us. The Bonghitters have returned for a run at the 2009 NYSML championship.  First game was on to their home field in Central Park where the Bonghitters posted a win against GQ.  The first inning was a smoker with 4 runs from the top of the Bonghitters order. The pretty boys of GQ were no match for expert fielding highlighted by a beautiful double play started by Dan D. who tagged the GQ batter at second then threw to first to get the batter out. GQ rallied for 4 runs in the 4th inning. But in the bottom frame John F brought the Stoners back with the first home run of the season that he ripped into right field. By the time they returned the ball, 3 runs had scored. Pitcher “Rundown” Rick R. shut down the GQ batters in successive innings save one run in the 6th.  He also stole home for a run in the 4th inning.  At the end it was 11-5 for the Green Machine.  That's the way to start the …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Fall Short in 2008 NYMSL Title Defense

    Fri Sep 19, 2008

    -

The Bonghitters seemed to have more fun, even though they lost to Businessweek for the NYMSL title this year. All the pressure was on Businessweek, that powerhouse squad of suits who went undefeated this season, and lost only once since last year. And that was against The Bonghitters for the 2007 NYMSL Championship.

Businessweek for years was a punching bag for the “Green Machine” but no longer. They have assembled quite the lineup. But having said that, this was no blowout. Businessweek took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Bonghitters clawed right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Abe singled, Dave H. walked and Jeremy smacked an RBI single to bring home a run. Damion then followed with an RBI shot up the middle scoring two more runs.

The game then slowed down, as the defense stepped up. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 5th when Jason B. doubled and John …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Defend Title in Round One of 2008 NYMSL Softball Playoffs

    Thu Sep 18, 2008

    -

After several rain delays, the playoffs for the 2008 New York Softball Media League title began last weekend on a beautiful sunny day in Central Park. Defense was the name of the game. The defending champion Bonghitters sparkled in the field in the opener with a perfect defensive display. There were double plays, running catches and no errors.

John “the Mouth” F. overcame nightmare parking and thousands of mini-marathoners to arrive just as he was due up and he promptly ripped a triple. Oxygen was immediately brought out to third base, along with a short stack of ribs. Dave B. was 3 for 3 including a triple. The “Green Machine” did have some wildness on the mound, but they were able to pick up the hurlers with timely double plays and clutch hitting. WSJ loaded the bases twice with one out but they were unable to score.

Abe came through with an unassisted double play to kill WSJ’s rally in the 4th inning. …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Get Even, Crush Trader Monthly In Regular Season Finale

    Wed Aug 27, 2008

    -

After smoking the Bonghitters in the league opener; 14-6, the Bonghitters returned the favor in the finale of the regular 2008 season as The Green Machine "rolls" into the playoffs.

Trader Monthly scored two runs on a homer in the top of the 1st inning and it looked like The Stoners were in trouble again. But this time the Bonghitters were ready. In the bottom of the inning, they batted around the order and scored a Bonghitter record 15 runs!

The big hits came from Nico (2B, 3B and 3 RBI) and Darren (two hits including a three-run HR). Four walks and a whole bunch of errors and EVERYBODY scored. Trader Monthly little resembled the team that punished the Bonghitters on their home field back in June.

This game also had playoff implications. The Bonghitters found themselves in the position of needing to win by nine runs in order to avoid arch-rival …READ MORE

  • Hemp Hemp Hurray! The Bonghitters Make the 2008 Playoffs!

    Fri Aug 22, 2008

    -

After an unexpected break due to the rain that washed out several Media League games, the Bonghitters returned to the North Meadow for a league game against rivals DC Comics.

Bonghitters’ pitcher Jason M. had four no hit innings with the Bonghitters fielders making short work of the DC Comics team's early innings. The fourth and fifth innings belonged to the big hitters for the Bonghitters; Darren P. with a two run triple, Dave H., Jeremy A. and Dave B. got hits that brought in runs.

DC Comics came back for a rally in the sixth and seventh innings loading the bases twice and getting four runs in before the mighty Bonghitters defense shut them …READ MORE

  • The Bonghitter post a big win over Vanity Fair

    Tue Aug 12, 2008

    -

The Bonghitters are back in fighting form with a big win over Vanity Fair on their North Meadow field.  That field has a batters box that is doing a great imitation of a sandbox but that did not hinder the Bonghitters who scored 4 runs at the top of the first inning.  The Vanity Fair team answered with two runs and managed to hold off the bonghitters for a couple of innings.  The bonghitters the loaded the bases and John F hit a big triple that brought in two runs.   A fielding highlight from the middle of the game was the catcher Morgan R and third base Dave B running down a Vanity Fair player who was tagged out at third on his second pass. Then Jason M started off a big rally that brought in runs from the top of the order.  Dave H, Dave B. Jeremy A, Nico, Danny D and Darren P kept the hits and …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters vs Wall Street Journal

    Fri Aug 8, 2008

    -

It was a wake and bake morning for the Bonghitters for the second matchup of the season against league rivals, the Wall Street Journal. It was sunny, hot and hazy as the Bonghitters started off the first inning with a four run lead, which included big hits from Nico, and Dave B.

As the game went into the 3rd inning, the rain and wind came through and the temperature dropped 10 degrees in about five seconds. Undaunted, both teams kept playing and the Bonghitters posted a few muddy runs from Dave H, Jason M, and Darren P. The Bonghitters were holding a comfortable 7-1 lead over the the WSJ team with bases loaded and 1 out when the game had to be called due to rain in the 5th inning.

The Bonghitters are on a winning roll going into their second game against league archrivals Businessweek. This game is set to take place on the home field Hecksher Playground.
