  • Bonghitters Fall Short in 2008 NYMSL Title Defense

    Fri Sep 19, 2008

    -

The Bonghitters seemed to have more fun, even though they lost to Businessweek for the NYMSL title this year. All the pressure was on Businessweek, that powerhouse squad of suits who went undefeated this season, and lost only once since last year. And that was against The Bonghitters for the 2007 NYMSL Championship.

Businessweek for years was a punching bag for the “Green Machine” but no longer. They have assembled quite the lineup. But having said that, this was no blowout. Businessweek took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Bonghitters clawed right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Abe singled, Dave H. walked and Jeremy smacked an RBI single to bring home a run. Damion then followed with an RBI shot up the middle scoring two more runs.

The game then slowed down, as the defense stepped up. The score remained tied until the bottom of the 5th when Jason B. doubled and John …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Defend Title in Round One of 2008 NYMSL Softball Playoffs

    Thu Sep 18, 2008

    -

After several rain delays, the playoffs for the 2008 New York Softball Media League title began last weekend on a beautiful sunny day in Central Park. Defense was the name of the game. The defending champion Bonghitters sparkled in the field in the opener with a perfect defensive display. There were double plays, running catches and no errors.

John “the Mouth” F. overcame nightmare parking and thousands of mini-marathoners to arrive just as he was due up and he promptly ripped a triple. Oxygen was immediately brought out to third base, along with a short stack of ribs. Dave B. was 3 for 3 including a triple. The “Green Machine” did have some wildness on the mound, but they were able to pick up the hurlers with timely double plays and clutch hitting. WSJ loaded the bases twice with one out but they were unable to score.

Abe came through with an unassisted double play to kill WSJ’s rally in the 4th inning. …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Get Even, Crush Trader Monthly In Regular Season Finale

    Wed Aug 27, 2008

    -

After smoking the Bonghitters in the league opener; 14-6, the Bonghitters returned the favor in the finale of the regular 2008 season as The Green Machine "rolls" into the playoffs.

Trader Monthly scored two runs on a homer in the top of the 1st inning and it looked like The Stoners were in trouble again. But this time the Bonghitters were ready. In the bottom of the inning, they batted around the order and scored a Bonghitter record 15 runs!

The big hits came from Nico (2B, 3B and 3 RBI) and Darren (two hits including a three-run HR). Four walks and a whole bunch of errors and EVERYBODY scored. Trader Monthly little resembled the team that punished the Bonghitters on their home field back in June.

This game also had playoff implications. The Bonghitters found themselves in the position of needing to win by nine runs in order to avoid arch-rival …READ MORE

  • Hemp Hemp Hurray! The Bonghitters Make the 2008 Playoffs!

    Fri Aug 22, 2008

    -

After an unexpected break due to the rain that washed out several Media League games, the Bonghitters returned to the North Meadow for a league game against rivals DC Comics.

Bonghitters’ pitcher Jason M. had four no hit innings with the Bonghitters fielders making short work of the DC Comics team's early innings. The fourth and fifth innings belonged to the big hitters for the Bonghitters; Darren P. with a two run triple, Dave H., Jeremy A. and Dave B. got hits that brought in runs.

DC Comics came back for a rally in the sixth and seventh innings loading the bases twice and getting four runs in before the mighty Bonghitters defense shut them …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters vs Wall Street Journal

    Fri Aug 8, 2008

    -

It was a wake and bake morning for the Bonghitters for the second matchup of the season against league rivals, the Wall Street Journal. It was sunny, hot and hazy as the Bonghitters started off the first inning with a four run lead, which included big hits from Nico, and Dave B.

As the game went into the 3rd inning, the rain and wind came through and the temperature dropped 10 degrees in about five seconds. Undaunted, both teams kept playing and the Bonghitters posted a few muddy runs from Dave H, Jason M, and Darren P. The Bonghitters were holding a comfortable 7-1 lead over the the WSJ team with bases loaded and 1 out when the game had to be called due to rain in the 5th inning.

The Bonghitters are on a winning roll going into their second game against league archrivals Businessweek. This game is set to take place on the home field Hecksher Playground.

  • Bonghitters Post a Win against Comedy Central...Turns Out the Joke Was on Them.

    Tue Jul 29, 2008

    -

After a midseason All Stoned break, I am delighted to report that the Bonghitters won a come from behind nail biter last night. The Bonghitters took their home field against new opponent Comedy Central with a great fan base cheering in the stands.

Comedy Central is actually a serious team with a slew of big hitters in their lineup; they grabbed an early lead and were up six runs in the first inning. They added two runs in the second, which gave them a comfortable eight run lead and perhaps the game...or so they might have thought.

The Bonghitters had a 4th inning two out rally, aided by some Super Sour Diesel to come back for six runs. Crucial base hits by Damion and Danny set up John F who hit a huge triple to bring in two runs. After some good natured ribbing from the Comedy Central pitching/catching staff, Darren P smoked a nicely placed three-run home run into the next field.

In the 5th inning, the …READ MORE

  • The Bonghitters Bested by Businessweek

    Sat Jul 26, 2008

    -

Media league rival teams, the Bonghitters and Businessweek, faced off for the first time since the 2007 Media League Championship when the Bonghitters came back from a five run deficit in the 7th inning to beat Businessweek for the title. This particular game was on the minds of both teams as they warmed up in their selected fashion.

Businessweek plays on a short field that has a wall on the right field side. Their team has mastered the art of lobbing the ball over this wall to create their version of a home run derby.  Businessweek got down to...well…business and scored four runs in the first inning. They loaded the bases and lobbed a hit over the aforementioned wall for a home runREAD MORE

  • The Bonghitters Smoke New Yorker Magazine

    Mon Jul 7, 2008

    -

    Final Score: 4-2 Bonghitters

After several away games, the Bonghitters were back on their home field in Hecksher Playground for their game against New Yorker magazine. The mood in the Bonghitter dugout was positive as the team went to bat and they did not disappoint.

The Bonghitters loaded the bases twice in the first few innings and brought in three runs in the third inning. Two beautifully executed double plays from Danny D. and Frank C. in the 5th and 7th inning respectively shut down the New Yorker team and assured the victory.

After the game, over some Super Sour Diesel, mojitos and spicy salsa, talk turned to the next game …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters vs Trader Monthly

    Tue Jun 10, 2008

    Final Score: 14-3, Trader Monthly

So, the first league game didn't go quite as hoped on the heels of the win against Playboy. Trader Monthly plays on a short, artificial field on the Lower East Side in Baruch Playground. There were some unusual challenges in the outfield in the form of some playing children and other games in progress.

The Traders got off to a 5-1 lead at the beginning of the game. Although we loaded the bases and got several runs, the Bonghitters were ultimately bested by a team of big hitters who played a great game and knew their field.

What can you do except enjoy the evening? Everybody had a good time and several players stayed for a fun pickup game as the sun set over the Lower East Side and some Super Sour Diesel.   …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters vs. DC Comics

    Fri Jun 6, 2008

    -

The Bonghitters played with a vengeance in their third league game against 2007 semifinalists, DC Comics.

DC Comics are fielding a good team but they were just no match for the Bonghitters on this beautiful night on the Great Lawn. The Bonghitters started off the first inning by quickly loading the bases before a big triple drove in three runs... and the hits kept coming. The third inning brought another rally, this time highlighted by a home run from Dave H. who smoked that hit into the next field. The DC Comics team posted a two out rally in the last inning but it was definitely all about the Bonghitters on this summer evening. When all was said and done, the Bonghitters had one of their best games of the season so far. Definitely the extra sunshine of summer solstice (and the Strawberry Cough) helped us along the way.

The victory over DC Comics brings the league tally to 2 – 1.

  • Bonghitters vs Vanity Fair

    Wed Jun 4, 2008

    -
The Bonghitters faced off against Vanity Fair on our home field in Hecksher Playground. The Vanity Fair "Veefers" wore red this year and played a tough game. The Veefers pulled ahead at the beginning but then the Bonghitters came back with one of our famous top of the order, two out rallies (those are always fun to watch) to take the lead. Home runs and great plays from the top and middle of the lineup earned us the victory.

Junius and his mobile bar appeared around the 5th inning along with the rally joints and some Florida tourists who stayed to enjoy the fun. There was an interesting base coaching style toward the end of the game but all in all a solid win for the Bonghitters.

The bonghitters will next be seen on a North Meadow field near you for league game #2 against WNYC.

Here are the results of the Bonghitters' …READ MORE

  • The Boners vs the Stoners

    Mon Jun 2, 2008

    Final Score: 8-3 Bonghitters

It was a dark and stormy night...no seriously it was dark and there was rain as we took the field for our second game of the season. We played through because we are not going to let a little rain dampen our spirits. The Bonghitters, in fine form, stoned, working as a cohesive team got and maintained the lead and won the game 8-3. The Boners were a great team and joined us for the singing of the Bonghitters' theme song and for some post game treats. There was green salsa and the smoke was Strawberry Cough Bubble and Super Sour Deisel.

Our standing is currently 2-0 as we go into our next game - the first league game of the season - against Trader Monthly on their field in the LES next Thursday.

  • High and Mighty: Bonghitters Win 2007 Media League Softball Championship

    Mon Sep 17, 2007

The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers would be proud: The High Times Bonghitters scored one for the counterculture by beating not one, but two capitalist tools to win the New York Media Softball League Championship.

The Bonghitters advanced to the championship round against Business Week by beating the Wall Street Journal in a stunning 6-5 come-from-behind victory, according to Celebstoner.com.

Business Week, riding high with a 35-game winning streak, took a 5-1 lead in the title game, but the Bonghitters rallied for an 8-6 win and the championship.

  • BATTERS UP!

    Fri Aug 10, 2007

    -

A highly competitive softball team sponsored by Students for Sensible Drug Policy and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, and comprised of lobbyists from all kinds of drug law reform organizations in Washington DC, has lifted itself to a 13-3 record so far this season, best for tops in the Congressional Softball League. Known as the One Hitters, and pitted against teams from the Justice Department, Customs, the Republican National Committee, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, and other hostile foes, the Hitters take to their natural grass field with two goals in mind, winning and making the related point that drug law reformers are more than just "lazy stoners."

Unfortunately, the One Hitters most bitter rivals won't even show up to play. The Office of National Drug Control Policy, which fields a team in the …READ MORE

  • Bonghitters Smoke Rolling Stone in Softball Season Opener

    Tue May 8, 2007

The last time Rolling Stone beat the High Times Bonghitters was in 2002 by a score of 8-7. They'd lost four straight softball games to the Bonghitters until last night (May 7), and with Rolling Stone leading 7-4 going into the final frame, it looked like they were about to snap the losing streak. But when the first three Bonghitters in the bottom of the 7th reached base on infield hits or errors, the comeback was on.

Abe Sacks' two-run triple tied the game and Darren Pelled knocked in the winning run with a bloop single. Final score: Bonghitters 8, Rolling Stone 7.

Welcome to New York media softball. Approximately 12 to 15 company teams compete against each other during the spring and summer, usually in Central Park, but also on other diamonds around the city. High Times, Business Week, Wall St. Journal, DC Comics, Trader Monthly and WNYC have joined together to form the six-team New York Media Softball League (NYMSL). Teams …READ MORE
