CONCERT REVIEW: Devin the Dude @ Highline Ballroom, NYC
Fri Nov 21, 2008
By Brittany Somerset
Devin the Dude and his comrades, the original Odd Squad / Coughee Brotherz members Rob Quest and Jugg Mugg, along with KB and Dee Rail, turned it out before an enthusiastic crowd at the Highline Ballroom, in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, on Monday, November 17th.
Devin, who is on the road promoting his fifth album, Landing Gear (on Razor & Tie), was his typically smooth, high-larious self, as he shuffled across the stage, singing in his laid-back Southern drawl. Ever the scamp, he educated the males in the audience by informing them if they “shampooed their balls, they might get 20 extra minutes of head… And if you condition those shits…” He then apologized to the ladies in the audience, if he offended them, although none of them seemed to mind.
While most rappers …READ MORE

The members of Rootz Underground are not your typical Jamaican roots reggae artists. They are fans of techno, house, drum and bass. Charles Lazarus, Rootz's guitarist, moonlights as an electronic dance music DJ. He's currently circulating a mix tape called Faux Rachel, named after a girl who threw up while listening to dance music with him at Winter Music Conference.
Stephen Newland, the lead singer, has a strong vibe deeply reminiscent of the late Bob Marley. While it may sound cliché to compare a dreadlocked Jamaican Rasta musician to Bob Marley, in this case, the comparison rings true. He is not only similar in appearance, but also in his vibration and philosophy. He has a way of commanding the attention of everyone in the room. He can spend hours reasoning and utters pearls of wisdom while …READ MORE

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Sumfest – Montego Bay Jamaica
Mon Jul 28, 2008
Story and photos by Brittany Somerset
The 16th annual, weeklong Summer Festival, AKA Sumfest, in Montego Bay Jamaica, is billed (in reference to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus) as "The Greatest Reggae Show on Earth." Sumfest certainly lived up to its slogan this year with plenty of amazing, high-wire acts, acrobatic dancers, and antics from myriad performers.
Over 15,000 people from all over the world flocked to Jamaica to see all of their favorite reggae, dancehall and international hip-hop stars perform.
It seemed the current fashion trend, and overall theme, for 2008’s Sumfest Dancehall Night was white. More than half of the artists were adorned in blazing white suits and large entourages accompanied each.

Thievery Corporation – The Outernational Music Tour
Sun Jun 29, 2008
Story and photos by Brittany Somerset
Back in 2000, the late audiophile Tim Haslett wrote a review of Thievery Corporation’s 12” single, Shaolin Satellite, “I can say with some confidence that this splendid piece of music represents a form of dance music that has yet to be labeled.”
Just as Tim Haslett was perplexed as to how to define their sound, Thievery Corporation’s dynamic duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton were also initially baffled by the ever-increasing demands from their fan base for live performances. They considered themselves studio engineers rather than rock stars. Rather than resort to using wacky clothes or laser light shows – like so many of their ambient and electronic, gear-based peers – they came up with ways to make their live act much more engaging than simply taking the studio to the stage. …READ MORE

CONCERT REVIEW: Capleton and Special Guests @ B.B. King’s, NYC
Wed Jun 18, 2008
Elvis may be “The King” and Beenie Man may be the self-proclaimed “King of
The Dance Hall,” but Capleton is the Emperor, as well as the emissary of Bobo
Shanti enlightenment. His performance in the heart of Babylon, at B.B. King’s in Times Square, New York City, on Sunday, June 15, was positively electrifying. Capleton and the David House Crew burned a fire so hot B.B. King’s almost spontaneously combusted. Special guest artists Jah Thunder and Culture Knoxx supported Capleton while The Prophecy, a five-piece ensemble, backed all three.
B.B. King's was dank and stank with the smell of sticky …READ MORE

Rebel Salute Festival @ Alpart Sports Ground, Manchester, Jamaica
Fri Jan 18, 2008
Story and photos by Brittany Somerset
This year’s 15th annual Rebel Salute, a birthday celebration for promoter and artist Tony Rebel, did not disappoint. An estimated 10,000 Jamaicans from Kingston to Negril, as well as international tourists who were visiting Jamaica from New York, London and Japan attended the all night festival at Alpart Sports ground in St. Elizabeth, Manchester, Jamaica on Saturday night, January 12th.
Rebel Salute is generally a more “culture” roots reggae festival than Sting or Sumfest (although both of those festivals do usually include a few culture and roots reggae artists). Roots reggae performances included those from an older generation of artists like Leroy Gibbons, who performed, “This Magic Moment,” Errol Dunkley, Spanner Banner, Chalice, ex-Black Uhuru vocalist Junior Reid, George Nooks, and Luciano.
The backing band for most of the artists was Live Wyah, the same backing …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

FESTIVAL REVIEW: Reggae Sumfest – Montego Bay, Jamaica
Mon Jul 30, 2007
By Brittany Somerset
At the 15th anniversary of Reggae Sumfest in Jamaica, LL Cool J took the slot that 50 Cent previously occupied as the festival’s international hip hop headliner. At a press conference before the event, when asked by a reporter how LL manages to stay on top of his game after approximately 20 years in the business, LL replied, “When you love something, it is never complete. I love what I do, so I don’t stop doing it. You will always have one hit wonders who put out one tune and disappear with a gold chain.” He defended questions regarding the exploitation of women in rap videos by stating that, “Women who appear in these videos have made a choice whether or not to be in them…You have to respect their choice,” adding that they are compensated well for their participation. He went on to say, “This music is made for public consumption. As much as critics complain about the girls in the videos, the …READ MOREtags: 2 « add a comment
