My 20th Anniversary Cannabis Cup Story #3

Fri, Apr 04, 2008 2:30 pm

Darrel (D-Line), Flynny (The Dog) and I, the three smoker/tokers from the little island we call England, were going to the 20th Cannabis Cup. We were in The Golden Tulip and ready to burn. I'd been talking to DNA on myspace and they told us to pop round to the shop and get a bunch of passes for the Hott Boxx party, so, straight out of Central Station, that’s what we did. We checked in with a happy, "Hello Sir" and boom we were en route to Amnesia for registration with a stop at the Grey Area for some Chocolope, Mexi-melt, Grey Crystal and the rest of the world’s wonders they have! Welcome to the Dam boys!

On arrival at Amnesia we went straight in. The HIGH TIMES staff – Craig Coffey and a lovely woman on hand – were happy to meet us. We showed them our ID’s and receipts for the passes and welcome to the Cup! We got guides, T-shirts, and a goodie bag each. Registration was so easy! My mates couldn't believe it. We went outside, put our T-shirts and passes on and we were off. Barney’s for a late breakfast…I thought. On arrival at Barney’s they had opened a new shop across the road called Barney’s Uptown. So we went in there. The lady saw we were judges and took us back across the road to get us our goodie bags. Man! It had the volitizer, G13 Haze and the Triple-X in it along with a grinder, umbrella, papers, etc. Plus we were having breakfast! This was going to be a Cup and a half.

The rest of the day we were hitting up every coffeeshop in sight. We got lots of stuff from the Greenhouse as well – excellent goodie bag included Arjan’s Ultra Haze, King Hassan and The Bubble Mania.

Well, the opening ceremonies hadn't even started yet! That night we found ourselves waiting in a queue for the HIGH TIMES bus. The guys from the USA made my day! " Is this the bus stop for Heaven?" one said. We got on straightaway and D and Dog loved them. The bus came and off we went! People were shouting "Cheech n Chong Tour Bus!” It was cool. The Powerzone was a great venue but there were a lot of negative people slaging HIGH TIMES for the choice (too far, not enough buses etc.).

Inside was just what I expected: Great music, great stands, great people! Big Buddha was there too with Buddha Blue! UK in the House! And the opening ceremonies! Thumbs up guys.

We got back to the hotel smashed out of our brains and the guys just thanked me! I said, "It’s all love. HIGH TIMES knows. The best week of your life is coming up.”

What happened for the rest of the journey I could have never predicted. I met Eddy Lepp again (great guy) and Jack Herer. We got shuttle buses from the Blue Bird to the expo and back (free Nepal Ice and Blue Cheese). Big shout out to the Blue Bird! You guys were excellent and the guys on the van from New Mexico, Canada, Finland, England!

At the DNA Hott Boxx party we sat down at the back in the club. We'd been eating THC laced popcorn in the queue and this man just walked over to us and said, "Mind if I sit here guys?" "No," I replied, only to see that is was Reeferman. Me and my friends were shocked. I'd read about this guy for the last couple of years and he knows his stuff when it comes to bud. I asked what he was smoking and he said, “Just some stuff I grew a couple weeks ago." I knew it was some good stuff, it smelled very fruity and his tin was just glistening with crystals. I wanted to ask him loads of questions but didn't want him to go, so instead we just exchanged the odd word and smiled until the Vortex woman came over – we had been talking to her earlier that day – after that we were all laughing and joking, having hits on the Vortex. It was great fun!

All the shows that went on: Redman, Los Marijuanos, The fashion show, Pyrx, Muck Sticky, Homegrown Band and Honky Tonk Home Slice, well, like they say, "That’s entertainment, baby!" And a bit extra with the lady from Greenhouse – she tore the roof off the Melkweg. It’s an excellent venue you got guys! And keep it up. I will be there next year (21st Cup). You at HIGH TIMES and your customers have showed me nothing but love. You got a subscriber for life!

Well done to all you who took part! Barney’s for winning, DNA for the new genetics, Greenhouse for the past and future and Apothecary Seeds – never got to try the Kaia Kush but 420 is coming up so I will be in Amsterdam! Hope to try some there.

Thanks HIGH TIMES,

-Mr P Sykes, England

pipe-line

Almost everybody occasionally goes counter on counter-culture mag, High Times. But in the end, the pipeline remains open - the light at the end of the tunnel is visible when we read this magazine. If the magazine goes bad, no one would read it anyway.
