In February of 2003, HIGH TIMES published my controversial article, “Was Jesus a Stoner?” Shortly thereafter, the concept broached in the piece—specifically, the biblical references to Christ’s use of cannabis in healing—received international attention.
The article was a follow-up to an earlier piece in HIGH TIMES, “The Burning Bush” (June 2002), on the possible references to cannabis in early Judaism and Old Testament texts. This exploration followed the research of scholars like Sara Benetowa and Immanuel Low regarding the identification of an ancient Hebrew term, keneh bosem, as the etymological ancestor of the modern word cannabis.

It was the beginning of February when they first started washing up on different cannabis forums around the Internet, like so many shipwreck survivors reconnecting on shore, searching for answers:

On Jan. 31, overgrow.com, the Web’s most popular cannabis-based Web site, disappeared. As what was first thought to be a one-day scheduled maintenance interruption stretched into days, speculation began to spread like spider mites through the online marijuana community. Started as Weedbase in 1999 by a coalition of international activists with cyber nicknames like OT1, Angrydyke, NL420 and Foolgirl, this computer-based cannabis cabal was joined by master coder Shabang sometime around 2000. Last June, Chris Bennett addressed the issue of cannabis in the Bible. This month, he concludes his investigation with a more detailed examination of the cannabis-enriched anointing oil used by Jesus and his followers.
"Christ" is the Greek translation of the Hebrew "Messiah." In modern English, this term would be translated as the "anointed one." The title "Christ" was only placed upon he who had "God’s unction upon him."
This holy anointing oil, as described in the original Hebrew version of the recipe in Exodus (30:22-23), contained over six pounds of kaneh-bosem, a substance identified by respected etymologists, linguists, anthropologists, botanists and other researchers as cannabis, extracted into about six quarts of olive oil, along with a variety of other fragrant herbs.
