  • CONCERT REVIEW: 6th Annual Ponderosa Stomp @ House of Blues - New Orleans, Louisiana

    Mon May 7, 2007

    By Cree McCree

After a post-Katrina year of exile in Memphis, the Mystic Knights of the Mau Mau stomped back to their home base of New Orleans, taking over the House of Blues with a three-stage marathon of blues, soul, rockabilly, swamp pop and New Orleans R&B capped by a mind-cracking set by the “Two-Headed Dog” himself: Roky Erickson, godfather of psychedelia (with his 13th Floor Elevators), pot-bust casualty, certified schizophrenic, progenitor of punk, notarized alien and arguably the most influential Texas troubadour since Buddy Holly, making a rare appearance outside Austin that some fans drove hundreds of miles to see.

Boy, was it worth the trip.

I met one of those fans, a Louisville slugger known as LP Burnout, on the outdoor patio, where Eddie Kirkland, Henry Gray and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson provided a one-two-three punch of deep Nawlins blues while we warmed up for Roky time by chilling with a couple …READ MORE

  • REVIEW: LANGERADO MUSIC FESTIVAL

    Fri Mar 17, 2006

Once a sleepy southern Florida jam-band scene, the Langerado Music Festival graduated to the big leagues in 2006. Eye-opening spectacle rockers Flaming Lips and ear-opening noise popsters Wilco were bookends for an adventurous lineup of artists ranging from founding fathers of funk The Meters to avant-garde high-stylists Brazilian Girls. The festival drew over 10,000 fans to Markham Park outside Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and gave Bonnaroo and Coachella a run for their money.

“Hippie radical drug culture freaks rule!” declared Flaming Lips agent provocateur Wayne Coyne at a no-holds-barred press conference that set the tone for the whole event. “Let’s make George W. Bush bow down to us!” Rising to Coyne’s challenge, The Meters’ Art Neville threw his baseball cap in the ring: “I’m running for president!” And for two days in …READ MORE

  • EVENT REVIEW:

Story & photos by Cree McCree

“I’m starting to get used to this festival thing,” a super-relaxed Jeff Tweedy noted midway through Wilco’s set at the 36th annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. So are founding Jazzfest producers George Wein and Quint Davis. After months of backstage turmoil, they emerged from the dark cloud of last year’s rain-soaked money loser to make this year’s Jazzfest one of the best ever.

Nearly 450,000 music fans poured through the gates over two long weekends blessed by delightfully cool spring weather and a deep and wide roster of acts. The Dave Matthews Band, the Black Crowes, Brian Wilson, Steve Winwood, Trey Anastasio, Nelly, Isaac Hayes, Elvis Costello, Widespread Panic, Jack Johnson, Ozomatli, Ike Turner and a slew of other headliners joined a bill of hometown heavyweights topped by a deep-funk reunion of the original Meters.

Most fest goers were blissfully unaware …READ MORE

  • NEW ORLEANS JAZZFEST 2004

    Tue May 11, 2004

    -
    Story by Cree McCree

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival has weathered a few storms that caused it to close its gates, as it did this year when torrential rains washed out the second Friday. But in 35 years, it’s never been struck by violence. The killing of Daniel Breaux, a local artist and beloved Jazzfester who was shot leaving the fairgrounds in a botched street mugging, ended the age of innocence. But it also testified to the power of music to bring people together. And on the last Sunday of Jazzfest, the day after he died, Breaux’s spirit was everywhere.

In Economy Hall, trumpeter Gregg Stafford played a jazz funeral dirge near a shrine friends built around Breaux’s dancing clogs. Over at the Fais Do-Do, the Jazzfest tribe held a traditional “watermelon sacrifice” in his honor, carving …READ MORE

  • TAKE THIS SERVICE CHARGE AND SHOVE IT

    Wed Dec 24, 2003

    Story by Cree McCree

In 2003, the String Cheese Incident took two daring leaps of faith. On the studio front, the rootsy Colorado jam band recruited the world’s most unlikely producer for their sixth CD, edgy British remix master Youth. In the live-show arena, the band’s ticketing company, SCI Ticketing, made an even bolder move: In August, it filed suit against Ticketmaster, charging the concert-ticketing behemoth with monopolistic practices that keep bands from selling tickets directly to their fans. In a countersuit, Ticketmaster accused SCI Ticketing of interfering with its concert ticket sales.

Even if the corporate Goliath prevails––hardly a foregone conclusion––the band has already made music business history. While a decade earlier Pearl Jam tried and failed to sic the Department of Justice on Ticketmaster, SCI bypassed the DOJ altogether by filing suit in US district court.

  • POSITIVELY JAZZFEST

    Mon May 12, 2003

Story by Cree McCree The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival—a nonstop musical orgy better known as Jazzfest—has always been a 24/7 party. Years ago, hardcore festgoers greeted the dawn at Benny’s, a funky little Uptown dive where all the cats came to jam after their gigs. These days, official 5 AM “breakfast shows” are routine, and jam bands like Phish (1996), Dave Matthews (2001) and Widespread Panic (2003) have spawned a thriving neo-hippie scene, complete with nitrous tanks, killer kind, and designer organic drugs. (Best Jazzfest buzz: chocolate-covered ’shrooms). But lest we forget, what feeds this hydra-headed monster is Jazzfest itself, held on multiple outdoor stages over two consecutive weekends in late April and early May at the Fairgrounds Racetrack. The festival’s 34th incarnation ranked among the very best in recent memory, highlighted by a …READ MORE
