Watch as veterans and volunteers transform an empty lot into a thriving summer garden!
Gordon Soderberg and his team at the Veterans Village in Detroit partnered with HIGH TIMES to build a first-of-its-kind, off the grid, farm-in-a-box growing container featuring a beautiful hand-painted mural.
Under the direction of artist Chazz Miller, volunteers painted the cheerful mural of sunflowers. Then the team got down to the dirty work, clearing and leveling space for the community garden, re-purposing steel frames into durable garden boxes, and planting a variety of vegetables like kale, broccoli, lettuce and tomato, surrounded by a marigold border for natural pest control. The local community will soon harvest a delicious, sustainably grown summer crop.
The Veterans Village in Detroit is pioneering sustainable energy and agriculture technologies, whilst training veterans in skills relevant to the ‘green’ industry. The Village supports veterans with a variety of community services, as well as on-the-job skills development. For more information about the Veterans Village, visit their Facebook page.
