Throughout history, cannabis users have been known to work with what’s available to them. Whether it’s finding a new way to smoke or a way to keep their hands clean, there are different household items that can be used as tools and shortcuts for certain cannabis-related situations and issues. Here are 10 household items that you should have and why!
1. Toilet Paper Roll
Smoking is not welcomed everywhere, and sometimes you’re forced to work with the hand that’s dealt to you. To combat tight situations, toilet paper rolls are perfect for helping mask the smell of vaporized or combusted cannabis. To make a "sploof," pack and cover one end of the tube with dryer sheets and secure with a rubber band around it so that nothing comes out when air is pushed through. When you exhale, do so through one end of the roll and continue smoking. The smell is now a non-problem.
2. Paper Clip
If you’ve ever owned a bowl or pipe, chances are you’ve found yourself blowing as hard as you can through the mouthpiece in hopes of unclogging the hole. Black sticky resin begins to form on the internal walls and can render a piece unusable after extended use due to a lack of airflow. Paper clips are a great way to clear out everything inside of your glass because of their bendable and skinny shape, allowing it to fit in most hard to reach places.
3. Cotton Swab
When dabbing, using a quartz or ceramic nail is the ideal method for obtaining the taste of the terpenes that are being vaporized. The problem with continual use is that eventually the nail gets oxidized, and the flavor becomes overpowered by the crusted surface. One way to extend the life of your nail is to apply your concentrates to the nail at a low temperature and use a carb cap to get the most of the dab. Immediately following your exhale, take a cotton swab and wipe the entire surface to ensure it stays fresh. Once a nail gets buildup from oxidization, there’s very little hope for returning it back to looking new again. Therefore, it’s best to stay on top of brand new quartz and ceramic nails by maintaining them.
The variety in water pipes can bring about a lot of problems, especially when it comes to dab rigs. Bongs tend to have wider mouthpieces, while glass for concentrates are usually smaller and therefore have tinier holes for being filled up. Plus, finding a space to fill up larger pieces can be a hassle and can even put your glass in harm’s way. Using a funnel to fill up your rig can turn a challenging task into a breeze.
5. Business Card
Those that prefer to smoke dry herb tend to have a preference on rolling and burning joints with or without filters. Filters prevents loose leaf from getting in your mouth and help cut back on resin from getting all over your lips. One downside is that they can take up a lot of room if you’re using small papers, but you can always adjust the filter to size. Sure, there are pre-folded filters available for purchase at head shops and online, but if you’re in a pinch, try rolling up a piece of a business card into a usable crutch.
6. Isopropyl Alcohol
Consuming cannabis is not always a clean activity, especially when you’re packing bowls and handling dabs. Not only are fingers susceptible to the wrath of resin, concentrates and ash, but glass is notorious for getting dirty as well. To combat both of these issues, isopropyl alcohol gets the job done by breaking down the unwanted resin and reclaim off of your hands and pieces. Alcohol wipes are convenient to have around for sticky situations that require a cleanup before the mess spreads elsewhere.
Smoking joints are a classic way of getting high, and with age old methods comes age old tricks. Holding a joint to close to the cherry, can be painful to your fingers. To prevent this inevitable issue, grab some tweezers and pinch the joint so that you don’t have to put your hands in harm’s way.
Those of us who prefer to use a grinder to grind cannabis have been rewarded with kief time and time again. To increase the yield and help push resin heads through the screen, put a clean penny in the middle chamber. You should see your kief production increase tremendously so that you can treat yourself to supercharged joints more often.
9. White Vinegar
Although alcohol does a great job of getting reclaim and ash out of your glass, if you use anything besides distilled water, chances are there will be hard water stains. This cloudy film appears on the inside of glass and can make it seem perpetually dirty, but its cleanliness is not a lost cause. White vinegar has been known to remove these stains following and preceding an alcohol rinse to further clean the glass.
10. Mason Jars
Cannabis is often stored in bags and jars, and the result of how you store dry herbs can alters its moisture levels and terpene profile. Leaving it out for too long will dry it up, but keeping flowers in a closed mason jar can help extend its life. Not only are they durable, but their airtight seal is great for keeping cannabis in the best condition possible.
