What Does “Organic” Mean?
An organic product can broadly be described as any product that’s derived from a recently living organism. To grow organic pot means that your growing medium and plant foods result from natural sources and not synthetic salt compounds dreamed up in a lab. Organic particles are capable of decay or are sometimes the product of decay, unlike the chemical formulas designed to grow commercial crops cheaply.
In a natural setting, plants, dead animals and animal waste all collect over time on the forest floor, where they decay with the help of bugs, bacteria, worms and fungus to provide nourishment in the topsoil layer so vital to plant growth. This process, referred to as the “soil food web,” is how recently living organisms feed their future selves and complete the cycle of life and death. Roots thrive, aided by mycorrhizal fungi that help …READ MOREtags: 62 « add a comment

HIGH TIMES INTERVIEW: MANU CHAO
Thu Oct 18, 2007
Interview by Danny Danko
Born in Spain and raised in France, Manu Chao originally distinguished himself as a member of the highly influential world-music band Mano Negra. As a solo artist, he’s one of the world’s best-selling performers, singing his incredible songs in more than five languages and leaving sold-out audiences ecstatic in his wake. His politically charged songs speak of poverty and injustice; a musical plea for peace set to an irresistible beat that blends punk rock, reggae, ska and latin rhythms into a unique sound that has yet to seduce mainstream American listeners. Chao just put the finishing touches on a new album, La Radiolina, his first international studio release since 2001’s wildly popular Próxima Estación: Esperanza. After a rare U.S. concert appearance outdoors in …READ MOREtags: 20 « add a comment

TOP 10 STRAINS OF THE YEAR: 2007

Top Ten Strains of 2007 By Danny Danko
Traveling around the world to test and sample the finest pot and hash that each region has to offer can be a grueling experience. Luckily, bud breeders have been hard at work, choosing carefully from their arsenal of strains to create better-tasting and more refined cannabis varieties that express the many hidden characteristics inherent in the indicas and sativas we love. Complex flavors and attributes continue to add subtle nuances to the pot-smoking experience that keep it interesting and unique. Recent research has determined and quantified the specific effects of essential oils known as terpenes, which are present in different cannabis varieties and combine with THC to provide the variety of experiences and tastes. Each year the bar gets set higher and higher. And so, without further ado, these are the strains—in no particular order—that raised the standard for kind buds in …READ MORE

HIGH TIMES SEED BANK HALL OF FAME
Thu Aug 16, 2007
By Danny Danko
In the Beginning…
Since the dawn of organized agriculture, farmers have traded quality seeds to ensure better harvests. In the United States, hippie folklore places the beginnings of American cannabis breeding for seeds in the early 1960s. Later, the smuggling organization known as the Brotherhood of Eternal Love brought cannabis seeds back from Afghanistan, Nepal and other stops on the Hippie Trail.
Around that same time, the Dutch Provos opened the Afrikaanse Druk Store in Amsterdam and began selling buds as well as distributing cannabis plants for one guilder per plant (at that time, the equivalent of 30 cents). A few years later, Wernard Bruining opened the “tea house” Mellow Yellow and jump-started the coffeeshop revolution.
It wasn’t until the early 1970’s that the first official seed company, Sam Skunkman’s Sacred Seeds, began to distribute the genetic …READ MOREtags: 85 « add a comment

Story and photos by Danny Danko
Upon arrival in Amsterdam, my colleague and I check into our hotel and immediately set out to find some strong sativas to power us through our first day and avoid the inevitable jet lag caused by overnight flights. Sitting in the Grey Area and puffing on some Blueberry Haze, my thoughts turn to supply and demand. The economics of the Dutch scene are strange: Coffeeshops can sell small amounts of cannabis but can’t possess more than a day’s worth at any time. Growers and middlemen must provide a steady supply of sensi to keep these places thriving. Where do they get enough buds to keep a constant stream of visitors stoned? I was here to find out.
Unraveling DNA
The DNA boys are fresh off of back-to-back HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup wins in the Seed Company category, first in 2004 (third-place indica for LA Confidential) and then in 2005 (first-place sativa for Martian Mean Green, and …READ MOREtags: 289 « add a comment

Growers are obsessed with sex. Above all, they want to know whether their pot plants are male or female. Female cannabis flowers form into the sticky buds we all desire, while males are virtually useless except to those interested in doing their own breeding. In fact, one male plant can ruin a whole crop of flowering virgin females by pollinating them, filling the buds with seeds and wasting all their blooming energy on pregnancy instead of swelling nuggets.
Is it possible to determine the plant’s sex while it’s still in seed form? Unless the seeds come from suppliers who specifically breed female seeds, this isn’t possible. Plants must be grown out to determine whether they’re male or female. Techniques exist, however, to figure out the sex of a plant fairly early in its growth cycle. One of the easiest methods is to take a cutting of the growing plant and induce the rooting clone to flower to show sex. The …READ MOREtags: 243 « add a comment

The brilliant comedian Bill Hicks died--in 1994 due to pancreatic cancer--before his biting humor made it to the mainstream. In a 1993 interview with Cree McCree in HIGH TIMES, Hicks stated: "I think all drugs should be legal--across the board, effective immediately." Drugs were a favorite topic in Hicks' stand-up routines. "God let certain drugs grow on this planet to help speed up our evolution, " he would say. "Do you think psilocybin mushrooms growing on top of cow shit was an accident. Where do you think the phrase, ‘That's good shit,' came from?"
Hicks' fans can rejoice at the release of two new CDs on Rykodisc: Love, Laughter and Truth, which compiles routines recorded from 1990 to 1993, and Flying Saucer Tour, Vol. 1, an entire show recorded before a less than responsive Pittsburgh audience in 1991.
