Unsigned Bands: Doc Ahk

Victor Smith (stage name Doc Ahk) began rapping in middle school in 2001 on Kadena Air Base Okinawa, Japan. However, it wasn’t until his mother bought him Jadakiss’ Kiss Tha Game Goodbye album that he took to writing lyrics down.
Now Doc Ahk writes all the time and studies artists like Jadakiss, Canibus, Method Man and Big Pun. “Those guys have the flow types that I emulate but don’t try to imitate so my flow is intricate but the punch lines are smooth and easily understandable,” says Smith.
Smith released his first mix tape, The Flamed Up Mix Show, under the name “Sean Dillinger.” The tape sold well at school but the nascent rapper realized the super-thug image was the total opposite of his real life – a skateboarder and suburban kid with wicked lyrical ability. As a result, he dropped the assumed persona in favor of a more natural one.
“In college I started smoking pot on the daily because it’s the best thing in the world. College is a giant bucket of stress that I always bathe in, but when I smoke the amounts of pot that I do I chill and laugh all the bullshit off with my friends Wick and Drew. I smoke enough to be able to function in the world but be in my own world at the same time.” Smith also realized the impact pot was having on his music: “The more I smoke while writing, the crazier my lyrics get.”
In March of 2009 Smith began posting songs on MySpace and since has drawn comparisons to Charles Hamilton, Kid Cudi and Asher Roth. Undagroundz Magazine rated his first online single, “Super Saiyan Vick” #1 in their Top 10 Songs You Must Hear section (over Busta Rhymes, Ya Boy and Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Smith’s all-time favorite MC, Jadakiss). And, recently, with the help of Planet Oki, Smith’s “The Drop” received radio play in Japan.
Doc Ahk’s Broke Ass Homemade EP, is currently free for download and features notables “Doc Spazzin,” “Black In The Burbs,” and fan favorite “I Don’t Do Drugs.” Smith is now working on the follow up, Doc’s Labyrinth, which should be available in November.
