Everybody knows Willie Nelson has a big heart, but you probably don’t know that he keeps it on a polished mahogany shelf next to the sturdy leather chair in the back of his fabled tour bus. ”The big red heart,” as Nelson calls it with a warm smile, is made of battered tin and once held a two-pound assortment of sandwich cookies; but when Willie pops the lid now, the sweet scent of marijuana hits you like a fragrant trade wind. Inside his heart, at any given moment, may be a half-ounce of pre-cleaned, finely ground cannabis. No sticks, and certainly no seeds.

“It’s a mixture,” Willie explains—a jambalya of all the good ganja that comes his way, combined via coffee grinder. He plucks a few fingers from the tin and throws down. I pull out a dense nug of Sour D and break it up to add to the mix. The HIGH TIMES interview has begun.

It’s hard to believe, but the world’s most beloved stoner has never before sat down for a sesh with the world’s most infamous marijuana magazine (see The Message on page 5). There are more reasons than anyone can remember, especially once we start smoking some Willie weed, but the logic goes something like this: While Willie Nelson occupies a unique position in marijuana culture, and remains an outlaw in every sense of the word, not all of his fans are fans of the plant—not by a long shot. And though he’s been smoking for half a century, and been openly unabashed in his affection for Mary Jane for over 35 years, his support for all things cannabis has had little negative impact on his very mainstream career. And his handlers would like to keep it that way.

When it comes to grass, Willie’s fans divide into three distinct camps: stoners like myself who view Willie Nelson as a sterling example of humanity; politically conservative country folks who dislike the pot thing but cry in their beers whenever he sings “Crazy”; and, finally, fans who don’t smoke and don’t care, but remain mildly amused by Shotgun Willie’s outlaw ways. So, unlike most marijuana activists, Nelson doesn’t preach merely to the converted. Arguably, on the strength of his art and his living example, he’s helped change more minds about marijuana than any other American.

“They’re watching me,” Nelson acknowledges. “I’m like the canary in the coal mine. As long as I can remember the words to my songs and do a good show, they say: ‘Well, it may not be affecting him that much.’”

Supercop made a big deal about his buddy that was killed by a "drug dealer." I've had this on my mind all day...

1. If we had a legally taxed/regulated market, we wouldn't have to worry about violent thugs selling to kids or worse, shooting at people who threaten their "turf", because there wouldn't be any turf.

2. Maybe this is too obvious to mention, but every day you suit up with the blue uniform as a cop, you know it could be your last night. It's a dangerous profession.

3. The drugs are not what killed Supercop's buddy. That's like saying it was the gun's fault for shooting someone. Yes, guns do kill people, but not by themselves. There has to be somebody on the barrel end with enough hate to point it at someone else.

Now they don't know what to charge him with? He has raped a 7 year old boy and had sex with a girl under 14, this is an on going problem and yet they are walking the street, but if you smoke pot you are the devil himself.
Our prison system is so over crowed with POT SMOKERS there is no room for the people who really need to be in there, like the child molesters and Super cop, oh sorry that is the same in one isn't it.

I feel badly any time anyone is killed. However, I'd be willing to bet that the drug dealer in question probably was dealing with harder stuff. Besides, when it's illegal, the amount of risk involved in satisfying an eager population brings a hard criminal element into the mix.

Yes, I think they should. If anyone is dumb enough to do bad drugs against the advice of medical professionals, they deserve what they get. Conversely, the more studies we do (and the DEA throws out) on marijuana, the more they say it's not a risk. Look at Europe...they don't have drug problems like we do, and it's because they've re-evaluated their stance on prohibition.

I know what your thinking supercop. True, legalizing pot would get the dealers of the streets, but if there were legal pot stores then the government would be the drug dealer, and pot would be everywhere. As it is, the government is the ultimate drug dealer, and pot is already everywhere. For every pound you confiscate supercop, there's a thousand more you've let slip. Seriously, trying to literaly eliminate weed would be like trying to kill every single misquito on the planet. Supercop likes to toot his own horn because he's got a can of raid, and killing them by the hundreds.

It's not something that can be comercialized and sold, kid. You have to make each phara array, unique to the individual strains of weed.
You've noticed that all weed smells a little different. By the way, even I don't condone YOU smoking bud. It's good that you do well in school, keep it up. Take it easy on mexican oregano. I realize that minors are still obtaining alcohol, even though they're not of age. But do you think it would be a lot easier if booze was illegal and there was a dealer on every other block. Dealers are just concerned with getting enough money together to re up. I live in a dry county. For those of you that don't know what that means. we can't buy alcohol within our county. In order for me to get beer, I have to drive twenty minutes on the freeway. For bud, I walk across the parking lot of my apartment complex. Oh yeah, he doesn't card.

When booze was made illegal, an entire black market opened in order to supply the DEMAND. With a black market, you have greedy men

The casualties may be a convenient store owner, a police officer, or an eight year old child. It's always tragic when someone loses their life over something that truely be prevented. However, it will never be prevented in the way supercop envisions it. If so, we wouldn't have all the violence, and unnessesary grief. I know you mean well, and that supercop is what allows me to have at least a little respect for you. What happened during prohibition?
Gangsters started making unreal amounts of money, and thus power. With all of this, combined with the stubborn politicians, you have something that creates something terrible. A war.
When your partner got killed, you were grieved, and angered. You damn well should be. If you weren't, then you aren't human. The kids at the local school didn't kill him, or her. Your war killed him. Prohibiton didn't work then and it's not working now. I guess the all the violence and killing then, was more problematic than the violence and killing now.

You know what? Supercop really doesn't know much. He thinks just because we will see blue lights in our rear view mirror that we're going to get busted. He's a fool. Supercop, I fool dogs. Laugh if you want, but I happen to own a K-9 police dog. It's about two and a half years old. And can sniff out dope like you wouldn't believe. Well maybe you would supercop, seein as how your a cop. Anyhow, back to the point, for the last year and a half I've been using your strength against you. I'm in college, majoring in biological engineering. Me and a couple of buddies has been working on what I call a pharamone array. Pharamones are what causes "scent", and if you take the phara makeup of marijuana, do a little math, and you have the nuetralizing element that completly masks, no eliminates the smell of marijuana. You see the phara makeup are the exact opposite in every way of pot. No matter how strong the snout, it can't smell what isn't there. If you think this is sci fi crap, well all the better for us.
I've seen blue lights, you see. Many times over the past ten years. I've learned to keep my hair short, because you cops are bad about stereotyping, and keep well shaven. It helps not to be stoned while driving. That way, you being a pothead really doesn't enter their head to begin with. Oh no sir, I didn't know my tail light was out. What's that you say? Get it fixed?

Sorry to hear about your buddy at the Academy. you have to ask yourself, though, if we had policies in place for responsible adult use, and taxation/legislation laws in place governing marijuana and other drugs, wouldn't that help? We wouldn't have to deal with violent smugglers/criminals in the first place to find what we want. No more smuggling and drug related crimes, if we could just go out and show some ID to buy some as responsible adults. Nobody's been killed by an alcohol or tobacco dealer (well, not since prohibition anyway), so doesn't that model work? Spend money on education, not filling up our prisons. If you really want to stamp it out, spend the war on drugs money on treatment programs and re-education, because you keep jailing us, and the use isn't down any.

Oh wait, I misspoke. The results are in: teen drug use is way down over the past decade in states that have decriminalized for medical use. Hmm...

Oh, and you're not getting to me, because you don't scare me. Keep trying, though. I laugh a little more every time you try.

The "what" is unneccessary in your sentence, and the word "sight" should be "site," as in website.

Sorry Supercop, but your credibility is about zero. I don't put much faith in someone who has worked "mostly in law enforcement and takes delight in the suffering of others." I, on the other hand, had to pass oral and written comprehensives for my Ph.D., which I doubt you could. (psych exams? Easy to pass unless you truly are crazy. Medical exams? Any smoker worth his salt knows how to breeze one of those. Polygraphs? Also not that tricky. Interesting that they gave you a poly upon hiring. Your bosses must not trust you.) My colleagues and friends and I make the world a better place, and make other people happy every day, while you mostly add to human misery. I know for a fact that if you believe that pot is really harmful, you're just putting your hands over your ears and yelling a lot, because the research is out there and the truth is incontrovertible. Well, you finally told us you're a GA cop, but you still haven't got the courage to give your name and badge number. Keep telling yourself you're great, and we're all losers...deep down, you're scared that you're fighting a battle you can't win. You'll smell our sweet smoke someday- maybe sooner than you think. .......so they are raised without a sense of right and wrong. They are brought up to believe that they will never have to give an account of themselves to God or any higher power. REAL BRILLIANT!!!!! Our God is a just God, which is way more than I can say for our legal system. Our government has the audacity to write "in God we trust" on our currency, when all along their only god has been the dollar. Sure it's their god. They've made our economy such that it absolutely takes two people for a family to survive. Our children are "raised" in daycare by someone who's been hired to watch them but there's way more to raising a child than watching them..... they need time with adults who will teach them some values, not just other kids. The days of June Cleaver are over.....welcome to the era of the dollar. We live and function in a high-paced madness that not only eats up our time, it takes head medications, alcohol, sleeping pills or some other "please, God, let me not be here for a minute" kind of drugs JUST to stand our very lives!!!!! HOW MESSED UP IS THAT??? People, I love people, with every ounce of my being. I KNOW they are fearfully and wonderfully made. What I fear far worse is our NOT reminding one another of that fact. What REALLY matters? Life goes by too fast to blow it. I'm certainly doing my part to pass on the positive vibes. Smile at strangers, pay a compliment when it's due, forgive someone when they are mean and try to figure out what their problem with life might be. You are the one who will be the better for it. As for myself, I am taking everything my Lord provided me with for a life of peace and good works. I will never be afraid to stand up for what's right. I am always happy to hear your ideas for making our country a better place. I haven't been speaking to Memaw but to any who might be reading this post. Dear Memaw,
I have all the promises and hopes one could imagine from living THE WORD. I would recommend this life to anyone but I would never force the issue. I think if our nation truly believes the motto "in God we trust", prayer would have never been taken out of school. If God and how I view Him is threatening to others, we can at least agree on the benefits of children having healthy communications with someone WORTH speaking to. When you take away God, you take away His Word and you replace it with the words of men. Pardon me for complaining but our very sense of right and wrong, fairness and equality and even our sense of justice can be found in the Bible. It's worth teaching. Answering for one's actions to some Higher Power is necessary. When you answer only to oneself and you have no correct sense of right and wrong, it manifests itself. Think of our children killing each other in our public schools. SOMEONE in society has devalued our sense of right and I honestly don't believe it was the christian faith. We've devalued life, lost respect for each other, allowed the dollar to be our god and the children have watched it all. WE WILL reap what's been sown in their minds because one day that generation will be in control of this country. It would be my suggestion that whatever beliefs we can agree on - and almost every religious persuasion has some good core values - we need to teach our children to respect life and other people. We DO all have to live here together. Now we just need to pull our heads from our nether-regions and do WHAT'S RIGHT!!! Things are either right or wrong and children live what they are taught. Did you ever stop to consider that the unhealthy rage that's fueling our young people today, could be nothing more than being raised in a confusing society? "We don't have guidelines anymore, it might offend someone who doesn't want any, we'll just raise you without them".....

If supercop and I for some reason ever met, and were aware of who each other was, I'd flat give him a back hand that would make a grizzly bear stupid. True cop story,

It was the week imediatly following 9-11. The border was shut down, weed was scarce. It had been a week and still we couldn't find it. All of the sudden a friend of mine came across a
cutie pie, and me and my roommate purchased a twenty sack. We went to a group of other friends house to get our head right. My buddies get the bright idea to go outside and throw the football around, at 3:30 in the morning. Someone called the boys in blue, for us being loud. The cops showed up, banged on the door, we opened it. The cops say, "whos been smokin dope?"
I say "Everyone here except him and her."
They asked if that was all that we had.
I replied "yep, thats the problem"
One of them kinda smiles, and asks where's the papers.
I said "there are no papers."
They asked "What did you smoke it with?"
"A bong"
They start looking around the back of the couch and found it. My friends new hundred and twenty dollar
wizard bong, and what was left of the twenty. They take the weed, the bong, they didn't even look around past the living room. We could of had a moonshine steel or somtin in the back for all they knew.
They told us to keep it down
and stay inside.
The good thing is, they didn't throw the book at us.
The bad thing is, we didn't have anymore herb.
The funny thing was, They didn't even pour the water out of the bong. The just got in the car with evidence in hand and left. Oh yeah, we were on the outskirts of town already. They were city cops and the turned to go away from town towards the country. Hmmmmm. I wonder if they had it as dry as we did after 9-11?

God greated the heavens and the earth and everything on it including Marijiana was one of those things, it has been smoked for thousands of years, and I am sure it will be smoked for thousand more.
Our goverment won't legalize Marijiana because they can not tax it and they won't get their cut. Stealing from the people, if they let us grow it we wouldn't need to buy it and there would be no selling of it so there is no sale and there is no TAX so the goverment is missing out on nothing, but they want that all mighty dollar. It would stop some of the drug lords and killing over drugs.
Praise the Lord for giving us such a wonderful plant to calm our brains.
I am sure he finds nothing wrong with it or he would not have supplied us with it.
I do hope that those that smoke pot, it does alter you mind so as with drinking and driving, don't smoke and drive. Keep it at home and off the highways.

I posted several days ago and had to come back on read again more post, I am a grand mother who refused to get through the day with out my weed, my 70's plus father tought me how to grow it and not get busted which I have done for years, I smoke with my kids who are all adults.

I've met Willie, in Mayflower Arkansas, and we smoked some northern lights while listening to good tunes. I'm one of the few stoners that has had the privlage. He is an example of what a real pothead is.
This "supercop" must have it in his head that all people that smoke weed are like the punks that can't think of anything better to say than random childish, vulgar comments. Supercop, if you are doing something that you feel is a just cause, then I applaud you. Only God can truely judge you. I smoke bud, nothing will change that. Not your futile war, you will never bust down my door. I work fifty hours a week at a job that I pissed clean for. I still workout 3 to 4 days a week, and I'm taking twelve hours this semester. My GPA is a 3.75, and I do all of this while
stoned. If you think that pot is as bad as the media portrays it then your misled, and misinformed.

Ok, i've got some ideas. I figure 'Supercop' is here for one or more of these reasons:

1. He's lonely.
2. He's secretly a 'head and now that he's a cop, he's really mad that no one will hook him up anymore and is taking it out on us.
3. He really believes the DEA's reports that say all these horrible things about marijuana, which FLY IN THE FACE of all the scientific research ever done by respectable organizations worldwide.
4. He thinks that somehow we feel threatened by all the macho swaggering talk he can make here.
5. He's too ignorant to do a little research on his own, and find out the truth about a few things.
6. He's not a real cop, just some asshole who SAYS he's a cop, says what he thinks will piss everybody off, and we're just feeding his ego and giving him a laugh by blasting him.

If he's a real cop, he shouldn't be afraid to give his NAME, LOCATION and BADGE NUMBER. What could a bunch of "dumb potheads" possibly do to threaten someone as big and bad as he is?

Everybody just quit talking to Supercop. You're not going to change his mind, and he's not going to listen anyway. Why waste your time? Go puff tough in his honor. I know I will.

Look Supercop, we don't go on the law enforcement websites and call you names. I have nothing against you, except that you seem to have an inordinately high priority to bust "potheads" because apparently, we're a major problem in the USA. While you're having so much fun "messing with us," there are REAL criminals out there that need to be brought down more than we do. I realize marijuana is a big item on Bush's list, but you guys put more people in jail for marijuana in the past several years than all the violent crimes combined. Otherwise law-abiding, productive people are going to JAIL and taking the space that could have been occupied by a rapist, murderer, or to use the buzzword of the past four years, terrorist. We keep hearing complaints that the prisons are overcrowded. Let me give you the inside scoop: marijuana use isn't decreasing any, despite stepped-up law enforcement efforts. So while you're arresting three quarters of a million pot smokers a year, there are a lot of violent criminals still free. If you'd leave us alone and go after the child molesters and crack dealers, you'd find a lot less crime on the streets.

Note to everyone else: Supercop continues to prove that deep down, he is dissatisfied with his life choices, so he comes here and tries to get a rise out of everyone by blabbing about how many potheads he can bust. Ask him how many violent criminals he put away in the past month. I'd bet he can't say much about that, because he's been too busy looking for smoke...

The conversation is wayyy too harsh for a willie nelson article. Let's bring things back into perspective here. Supercop, you obviously take your job very seriously, and you feel that stopping smokers from smoking is a part of that. Noone can fault you for feeling like you are doing your job. But allow me to point something out. Right now, there are unspeakable crimes happening in New Orleans. You would probably tell me that it's "all wacked out stoners" commiting the crimes, I challenge that mentality. Let's say that 95% of New Orleans is the victim, and 5% is the criminal. Do the math, round it off, and you come up with a pack of 25,000 criminals. You say "25,000 stoners running wild..." I say a survey done by YOUR law enforcement agencies found that 39% of adult males, and 26% of adult females arrested tested positive for marijuana use. Take the higher of the two if you like, 39% of arrestees are "potheads". That's about 10,000, or one in five criminals who smokes pot. That means that for every one criminal who is a "pothead", there are four "upstanding citizens looting, raping, and shooting at police helicopters alongside them. My point? A.) You're accusing the vast minority for the vast majority of actual crime in the country. B.) There are people out there who need to be PROTECTED AND SERVED in YOUR country and yet I'm sitting here rolling a joint and playing playstation and you're trying to kick MY door down for it. C.) Mind your tongue because potheads like me (I'm a Bio major on the dean's list at a major university) are probably going to be your boss someday..........That's a fact, and you're going to have to learn to deal with it.

Yes, there are some of us that post here who may use less proper grammar than others, Mr. "Arian Race." I do wish that everyone used it too. However, I think the fact that we have many people using many different types of syntax suggests that this culture appeals to a wide audience. It doesn't make the grammar mistakes right, but it does tell me that I can find "friends" wherever I may go, and that's a good thing.

Secondly, be sure that your own spelling and grammar are above reproach before you come on here and rip on others. To make the point, you misspelled "aryan" and "sense", and your whole first post is nothing but a gigantic run-on sentence.

Well Sports fans..I told you I'd be back. I see some of you have been pretending to me. I haven't posted since the 21st. Is your life that boring that you pretend to be the police? I guess if you can't pass the entry level tests that's what you resort to. Police work has been good the past week. Local High School wanted to make a "Statement" so we took the K9s into the school the first week and caught a dozen or so kids with pot, cocaine, meth, etc. One of the pot dealers (a little squirt we've arrested before) got expelled for dealing. Life is good.

I saw Willie in concert on June 12, 2005 in Bowling Green, Kentucky @ E.A. Diddle Arena. Wonderful Show, Wonderful Man. Buffalo just wasn't ready for the likes of him & Paul... And I support Willie in every aspect of his fine career & lifestyle of the herb. He turned 75 this year folks, once in your own life's, please try your best to see him, he may not be here a hell of a lot longer, although I hope he lives to at least 150. I just got back from seeing willie in Indianapolis. It was a great show! And every body was smokin!Would also like to tell you all that the cops didnt hassle us.
