“I need mo’ weed, just to smoke, so I can calm my nerves,” Ying Yang Twin Kaine raps on “Nerve Calmer.” “It helps ease the mind from the problems around us,” he claims. “That’s why I smoke so much—the problems of the world.”

The world may be full of problems, but the Ying Yang Twins aren’t too worried. Their latest album, USA (United States of Atlanta), tore up the radio and the charts. In fact, the Atlanta duo have helped put the Southern hip-hop chant style known as “crunk” on the map.

“You don’t have to be crunk with me,” Kaine’s rhyming partner, D-Roc, proclaims. “I’m already crunk with my own damn self.”

The Twins’ success is an outgrowth of the booty-rattling and vocally exuberant sound that Lil Jon made his trademark. Their rise began in 1998, when they hooked up with DJ Smurf, who included their song “One on One” on his album Dead Crunk. Smurf not only signed them to his label but also became a good friend and the de facto third member of the group, producing most of YYT’s tracks, including their recent hit, “Wait (The Whisper Song).”

While Smurf gave them their break, Lil Jon put them over the top, collaborating on “Get Low” (off Lil Jon’s 2002 album Kings of Crunk) and “Salt Shaker” (off the Twins’ 2003 release Me & My Brother) — both huge radio and club hits that dramatically increased their profile. But the crunk label is by nature restrictive, and with USA (United States of Atlanta), the Twins dramatically broke out of that stylistic pigeonhole with a far-ranging album.
