No doubt about it: College and cannabis go well together, particularly if you’re seeking true mind expansion, as opposed to a few semesters of mental demolition derby followed by the inevitable flunking out (hey—it happens). Regardless, marijuana has been associated with a highly intellectual, bohemian undergrad lifestyle since Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac smoked out New York’s Columbia University back in the ’40s, although nowadays it seems you’re just as likely to find a joint dangling from the lips of a jock, nerd, Greek, geek, teacher or dean as from the lips of a freaky beatnik.

But while marijuana use has undoubtedly become more mainstream over the years, and you’d be hard-pressed these days to find a campus anywhere that doesn’t have its share of heads, some schools are certainly more suitable for stoners than others. So, with that in mind, HIGH TIMES proudly presents our annual list of the Top 10 cannabis colleges in America. Please bear in mind that this is a highly subjective ranking. Also, you probably shouldn’t decide where to spend four years of your life based on a Top 10 list in a magazine.

Founded: 1876

A recent study commissioned by the US Department of Health and Human Services ranked Boulder as the second-most-pot-smokingest city in America (behind Boston). It’s no coincidence that this offbeat locale was where Mork set down his spaceship in Mork and Mindy—but if the local freaks ever get to be too much for you, solitude can be found in the Rocky Mountain National Forest, which practically borders the campus.

2) University of Wisconsin - Madison, WI

The original home of The Onion (America’s finest news source), UW boasts a history of antiestablishment ideals and lenient local laws when it comes to marijuana. Also, hate to Badger you, but it’s a damn good school.

By far the smallest school to make our list, New College allows students to create their own classes. Hey everybody, little known gem hidden behind other schools like Ohio University in good old Athens, OH(which is slipping off the radar due to stricter legislation and local laws)is Fabulous KENT STATE UNIVERSITY. With a sky rocketing enrollment and a Halloween Extravaganza which is trumping more and more schools across the nation (Including OU... yeah I've been there for the 11:00 dispersal of all fun from court street), the strains that are locally grown and shipped in are blowing more and more minds with their ability to heal and treat the overworked minds and bodies of the area. I used to live in NC, thought we had the best nugs. Then went to UCSB and was surprised how much better it was. Now I moved to Boston and had my mind blown. You dont know the meaning of dank without going to beantown. I know all you Cali boys gonna hate on this but I went to San Diego and Boston is better. Dont disagree if you dont have the experience of actually trying it all over the country. Theres a reason Boston has the #1 weed smoking population.

To clear up the confusion, the most bud in the US comes from the Emerald Triangle: Humboldt, Mendocino, and Trinity Counties. This is Northern California. Dollar point is the lowest you will get. Average eighths are 30, though you can find em at 20. Ozzies for as low as 100. And this is talking about the best weed. You think your area has dispensaries? Look at the Bay Area. The real list:

Go ahead and add UVM, Evergreen, Madison, and NC.

Ok first off you cannot say who has better weed or what city does. being from nc everyone talks about boone having the best but if u think about it all the growers are essentialy getting there seeds from the same places, it really depends on how good of a grower you are, you can have a dank ass plant of kush or whatever but if its took care of wrong its gonna be mediocre, or u can get bag seed from swag and actully make it pretty decent by caring for the plant right. genetics deffinitly have alot to do with it but isnt obvious that place that have legalalized bud is deff gonna be better because its not somebody in there closet growing, they have actual scientist testing different crossings of diff buds new ways of growing, and on top of that say you and i sit down and we both smoke two different kinds of weed say ppp and ny disiel there are both awesome but individual difference between human could make me like one more than the other and you more than the one i like. Im just sick of arguing over where the best weed is, thats not what its about its about sittin down packing a fat bowl and doing what u want(do u lol)

The city of Berkeley has city ordinances preventing cops from doing anything about weed. And Berkeleys proximity to the tri-county region gets it the best bud in the country year round! BA is a hormone used for the grouping of tissue cells.

NAA is an organic hormone used for stem, root, callus, and leaf growth. NAA can also be utilized after plants are put into the ground.

PPM is a plant preservative added to increase plant life during the In-vitro stage. There has been no scientific proof that plants need PPM. (In-Vitro/artificially grown in medium)

TDZ and IBA and INA and HCI and IAA are used to assist in the rapid tissue growth of all cells.

A cannabis plant may have between 5 to 30 chromosomes (and average of 1,500 genes for each chromosome). There are 20-66 types of cannabinoids (which are glands and secretions from glands in the cannabis plant). Cannabinoids have about 30,000 to store the information it needs to make the proper enzymes, structural proteins and hormones are necessary for the organism’s life and cell structure.

Okay, lemme just say this... I have lived in NC and CO and the fact is, in NC its 1) Hard to find a legit, dependable, not shady dealer and 2) To find weed thats Really good. I had friends that went to App State and Ive been to Swannanoa.Its mediocre. So here are the facts: To my experience, the weed here in Denver blows anything from NC out of the water. In north carolina, what they say is dank chronic is like swag to us, and barely good enough to call mids. In Denver, there are soo many dispensaries everywhere, and it sooo easy to find any real good shit. Im gettin ready to go to uc bou and my friends still in high school that get caught with it, everybody gets caught, ...its a lecture and a slap on the wrist. Back in NC, you get caught and they go Hard On Your Ass. Not tryna dis any school, but thats the way Ive found it to be.

Now I'm not a huge smoker but I enjoy a good toke or two through out my week. I could talk crap about how much better the weed is where I live and all that but it's really not what makes a stoner school a true stoner school. It's how the people treat it. I'm really surprised that UVM is above Johnson on this list. I'm assuming it's because of how many people are there. They people who go to UVM are snobby alcoholics who get smoked up at an "awesome rager" on the weekends. At Johnson it's an entire tradition. You meet people by smoking bowls. You get to know people by going out and smoking with them. If a person asks you if you smoke you just laugh and say 'of course. It's fucking Johnson'. The past time here? Play Frolf and blaze. Everyone smokes. It's a small school but the pot heads are in the masses. Everyone knows the etiquitte and everyone respects the green code. Just take a walk down the hallways and you'll be able to fly to class.

hell yea, i lived in colorado for 4 years and that's where i started smoking. i don't have anything to compare it to but i know it's dank. never got shit weed once. always the same price too, and it seems danker every time. just moved to atlanta, me a lot of people that smoke but haven't yet here. plan on going to fort collins for college!!

Im pretty stoked madtown is number 2, and rightfully so. you got your indoor and outdoor homegrown chronic buds for cheap and if your like me you know how to get ahold of hella cali buds for dirt cheap. not to mention the hook up i have from boulder and my homies in fort collins that supply boulder. madtown is tight cuz we get all the best buds from everywhere. ive never been to amsterdam but i have been to boulder, fort collins, san diego, san fran, and seattle. the buds are good everywhere if you know where to find them but nothing compares to the people in madison. first day there i met a guy on my buddies floor. we smoked a blunt in his dorm and stunk up the whole floor. no one cared cuz they all smoke. even the administrators and shit. not only that theres a pretty huge ass marijuana festival the beginning of october. and as of november 2nd 2010, if what i read isnt bull shit, the medical is legal in good ole wisconsin finally. the vote passed 70 to 30 i was told. so smoke on! even though before it was passed you could smoke a bowl in your front yard in front of a cop and he wont do shit. (i know from many encounters)

Ive been many places that are listed on here as legendary but as far as the variety of buds to the variety of places we can easily get dank from and the dirt cheap prices and the hospitality of the mellow stoners in madtown, no other school compares. Come to MIFFLIN STREET if you wanna get fucked up and not have to blow in a breathalizer or hide your stash!

Seriously, University of Arizona has it all. All the dealers are rich kids from Cali who bring club stuff and sell at 45-50 an 8th. Plus, if you're looking for brick or mersh bud to put in edibles, there are plenty of sketchy mofos who sell 60 dollar ounces of the stuff. I know more people here who smoke than who don't. Oh, and to the people who say they have a really good head shop: we have 3. And of the 3, one is the highly respected Fathead Glass where they blow glass in shop and ship it to the rest of the nation. So for available qualities, prices, quantities, pot friendly people, and glass shops. U of A has no competition. Oh, and if you're tight with a dealer, they will take orders for when they go on their next club run. No one else even try to come close

Just came back from amsterdam,greatest city on earth lol and to rank it I must say that amsterdam dank is a notch better than cali,but in austin you can not find schwag.period.and every person at ut knows where the dro is anddd were the only city for a thousand miles that has a festival where you can legally smoke pot (next closest would be colorado). It kinda feels weird to me that ut,the number one party school in the nation with a very liberal weed policy (three of my friends were caught and they did nothing to them! In the dorms!) Is not on this list.I kinda feel snubbed.as for the north and yalls weed,it prolly is some dank but I bet mines cheaper and just as good.my cuz lives in ny and says its expensive as fuck but chronic.id much rather get it cheap and be of the same quality!

I agree with the Colorado school. Not only is weed in Colorado dank and stinky, but it also gets progressively better for stoners in the state. You don't get in the same trouble for it you would in some of the states.

Boulder is a liberal city. It's also very environmentally friendly.

Why are florida schools on the list? The state is very strict with weed, yet makes it really easy to obtain prescription pain pills. Those pain pills kill people.

Actually UF has no college NORML chapter. As a matter of fact the only College chapter of NORML in Florida is at the University of Central Florida, which is the #1 student run NORML chapter in the nation.

There are only 2 chapters of NORML in Florida and neither of them are based out of Gainesville or the University of Florida. What the University of Florida DOES have is an excellent Botany program for those interested in a life of cultivation. Please check your facts and revise.

my dudes....dont forget about Bradley University in Peoria, IL...you might not think of Illinois to be a prime place for weed (probably because it isn't) but at Bradley, it is HUGE...a lot of the stuff that comes through is "fire" weed which is big in Chicago...Ive been to UF, UC boulder, New School of FL, and UW Madison, and trust me, they dont come close to Bradley...theres a big head shop in town, so pretty much every kid has a cool apparatus..by far the most vapes i have seen in one city, every kid has one...its one of the few colleges where smoking is bigger than drinking...trust me, add that to the list

CU Boulder is #1, but what about Colorado's 2 other major Universities- CSU (Ft. Collins) and UNC (Greeley)? Both Uni's have a very active cannabis culture, CSU is also in a really cool hippy town. UNC, on the other hand; is a huge performing arts school, enough said!

How about Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC? This seems like a no-brainer. According to NORML, WWC is the most pot-friendly college in the nation. It's right outside of Asheville and anyone who knows anything about the scene there understands that you would be hard-pressed to find better product anywhere else on the east coast.

Where did they come up with these lists? I haven't heard of most of these schools being referred to as stoner schools... Sounds like most of these people disagree...I'm glad UVM made the list but it should be higher. I agree with Pearl and Curt. I've gone to the U of Minnesota, The Evergreen State College and now I'm in grad School at U of Arizona. I have to say out of all the places I've been, if different parts of the country, no place represents like Evergreen. Dank is the central focus of Evergreen culture and its right out in the open with everyone. I went to Evergreen for 3 years and the second year I was there it was High Times #1 on this list. The only reason its not on there now is because the Administration viewed this accolade as bad publicity. keep that in mind in these school rankings as I'm sure the Evergreen administration isn't the only place thats had this issue. lived in the bay. lived in eugene. lived in vermont. Best place for grass is none of them. The best kept secret lies in southeastern ohio. There is nowhere else in the country like this. they were growing sensi buds in meigs county ohio well before humboldt. true historians of kind bud know about southeastern ohio. It is known as the buckle of the appalachain pot belt. people are more snobby about kind bud on the west coast. lots of people in the bay puff for example, but it's more low key. in southeastern ohio people are smokin 5 to 6 grams of one hit quit a day. An eigth of the 1 hit quit lasts a half day in southeastern ohio. Everyone I always met on the west coast puffed, but not like they do in southeastern ohio. an eigth would last my friends in the bay a week! and believe me that bay weed ain't any better than meigs county ohio gold. to all you west coasters: the true old school bomb bud scene in this country lies in southern ohio. the mexicans and dea haven't even touched southern ohio wheras on the west coast, they have realkly ruined the scene. jerry garcia said that he "never saw as many heads in one remote place as he did when he played the ohio university ballroom." that was back in '68! And still to this day the scene in southern ohio hasn't changed. trust me there is know place else where you have the combo of great laws and great bud like southeastern ohio.

I cannot believe that more schools from california and the northwest are not on this list. The bay area has the most chronic buds every fall, winter, spring, summer. it baffels my mind that ucsc, sf state, and cal berkeley are excluded from this list. I gotta give some respect to my hometown of Burlington Vt and i went to UVM for the first 2 years and the buds up there are diesel. some of the best outdoor harvests anywhere as well. and no disrespect to gainsville where i am right now, but the goods down here dont even compare on any scale fathomable.

There is a small college in the south-west courner of colorado called fort lewis college. In this small 5000 person school you will find some of the most hardcore stoners, as well as some of the best weed. Almost everyone you come across smokes and is very open about it. When the winter time rolls around, there are a number of people smoking throughout the ski resorts. you can find little caves with joints left behind. It is a stoners heven. Only $1300 a semester in state.

As far as Madison Wisconsin goes.. I'm going to have to agree with the rating. Never enrolled there, but sure as hell have smoked there. I had a buddy that rented a 5 room apartment no more than a block away from a police station. I didn't know it at the time but i had just brought my 4ft 3 stage bubbler out to the deck to smoke.. one big hit.. one big exhale..

As I had exhaled I noticed 4 uniformed guerillas of the law and oh boy, they noticed me.

There wasnt much I could do in the way of hiding the fact that I was partaking in such a "criminal" act.

Did they do anything? No..
Did I end up taking another rip while they stood there? Yes..

To make a long story short, Madison is unbelieveably lenient when it comes to pot.

I agree that Athens, GA has some KILLER varieties (cotton candy, grape skunk, northern lights, etc) but I am from NYC area and I have to say that nothing beats the HAZE from Washington Heights. NYU, Columbia, St. John's, Manhattan College, Hofstra, etc all have the REAL DEAL haze! Nothing like it anywhere.

Just a note: Hampshire may be more publicized because of the SNL skits, but take it from someone who knows: The buds at Hampshire pale in comparison to what can be found at UMass Amherst, if you know what you're doing. In fact, they usually come from UMass. Hampshire just has more psycadelics. Oh and yes, on Halloween they actually close the campus to car traffic at like 2pm, and EVERYBODY trips. Mad fun. ok , the city of pittsbugh pa (the brugh0 has been dry of quailty weed for practicly all summer, because some guy big up got shot or busted or robbed, with 40 pounds coming on his way to pittsburgh, if anyone can help us out with like some real killer that'd be great

There is definately no doubt that cu is the best stoner college. Everyone smokes here (even the professors), we have the best ganja, and we have the most ganja. thats all there is to it. p.s. fuck bush

I live in san Francisco now and we have really good cannabis all year.
But i must admit..., i spent many spring and summer in Boulder, tubing down the creek behind the college, hanging on the hill, and hiking up Canyon dr., or going up to the Rocky Mountain national Park, and the cannabis was always part of my adventures. Boulder has much good bud, but not as plentyful as here in San Francisco. I have lived in both places. I could live as happy in Boulder and i can here in san Franciso. Here in San Francisco, things are wide open. Pot clubs every where, great bands, great food, kewl places to just hangout, plenty of girls for us straight guys, pleant of gay guys for gay gus, plenty of girls for girls, guys,, etc etc. San Francisco is just a really neat bizzare place to live.

Colorado is where its at baby! Born in Boulder, I can vouch that it is a great place for stoners. Lived here all my life. There's nothing like tokin a fatty on top of the flatirons overlooking the front range of colorado. Plus, we have some of the best weed in the world here.

I will have to agree with LBC toker...I currently go to LB state in ca and everyone I know smokes pot! I'm a bio major and I know tons of people who toke in and out of school. I demand a recount!! There for sure needs to be more ca schools on the list.

madison is where all the geeks go, you have to have 4.0 gpa to even get in. The town is stony, but besides binge drinkers, there are many straight edge boring types. Im not sure why it would make the top 10 much less number 2?

What about Appalachian State University? You guys need to do some more research next time because App is one of the stoniest campus' in the country. The heads are here in Boone!!

What about Long Beach State. I was there for four years and I only met a handful of people that didnt smoke. You could smell the smoke on campus in the courtyards. Long Beach State has 35,000 students and 90% smoke ganja.

Berklee College of Music in boston is the #1 pot school in the country. My bro goes to u of colorado boulder, i went to berklee, and berklee wins hands down. out of 4000 students, i would say that 90% of the students smoke at least a few times a week, and that most of boston's finest organic ganja comes from there.
