The Business of Pot: CNBC Premieres New Marijuana Investigation

Wed, Jan 14, 2009 1:27 pm

-

In January of 2007, longtime HIGH TIMES contributor, Jon Gettman, declared marijuana to be America’s largest cash crop – larger even than corn. Now, CNBC takes a look inside the business of marijuana in a new investigation, Marijuana Inc.: Inside America’s Pot Industry.

CNBC explores the issue of marijuana in Northern California – an integral part of the economy for some, scary devil plant that ruins lives for others. While there are plenty of concerned citizens and red-faced law enforcement officers (including an appearance by everybody’s favorite fear-monger, drug czar John Walters), Marijuana Inc. also features growers, smugglers and activists, including Richard Lee. Additionally, Marijuana Inc. offers an inside look at impressive gardens and grow-ops, Oakland’s medical marijuana dispensaries and even America’s first pot college, Oaksterdam University.

CNBC’s Marijuana Inc.: Inside America’s Pot Industry premieres Thursday, January 22, at 9pm and re-airs Sunday, January 25 at 10pm ET.

And, don’t forget to check out CNBC’s brand new Gallery of Medical Marijuana - compiled with the help of HIGH TIMES Senior Cultivation Editor, Danny Danko.

Just look whats going on in Mexico because of the drug war,the same thing whent on in the u.S. in the 1920 alchahol prhibition and it did not stop until that prohibition was stopped. People should demand an end to this prohibition and take it out of the hands of violent gangs. Millions of americans and people worldwide smoke weed and enjoy it, you can not lock up that many people. I do not favor legalizing hard drugs, just weed its harmless as I have smoked since I was 15 years old and have no side effects at all, keep a job and made 55K last year. Give it up Gov. You can not win,you are just getting people killed, that is your legacy. Lets use common sense if you have any.

Please folks, take some English classes. Most of you don't form sentences correctly much less spell the words that are in them correctly. Be intelligent, act intelligent and maybe we will come out victorious in the effort to legalize a very helpful plant.

First they have lied over and over again about the dangers of pot use. They have lied cause they want to help the cops and not the people that really need the help. I'm sure the terrorist will be glad they don't legalize the weed, cause they know it's one of there strongest weapon against Americans. As long as our government keeps weed illegal the terrorist will keep a cash flow and they will keep on, keep'n on. Legalize it now and PUT the terrorist out of business once and for all. Alot of ill people could benefit from the use of pot and it's not as dangerous as we've been told, if used in the confort of you own home. Alcohol kills 500k a year, if they were worried about something killing people then they should be more concerned about ALCOHOL, not pot.
Yell our government is really smart, they have legalized a known poison (alcohol) and are a shame to have to admit that they were WRONG. Pot doesn't kill, alcohol does, and has been killing people for years, but that's OK! HOW ASS-BACKWARD IS THAT KIND OF THINKING. Our government uses pot as a tool to rid our country of bad element people. Legalization could put a stop to all the madness and help so many people, ain't that what government suppose to do. I wonder?

Legalize it!! You can tax it, make clothes and all kinds of shit with it, help people with cancer.. etc. Personally, I think alcohol is worse then pot. People get drunk and fight, they don't remember what the hell they did the night before, it fucks up your liver all kinds of shit.. but if ya smoke a lil weed.. your mellow and love everyone. Hell.. make the laws just like drinkin' and drivin'. Stay your ass at home.. burn a big fat one and relaaaax :)
Why drink and drive when you can smoke and fly?!?!

I feel that pot should be leaglized for the simple fact I my self would have died from my throte cancer if it wasnt for the use of pot to inhance my desire to eat, plus it helped me with the pain of going threw chemo and raidation treatments, it made it easier to cope with what i had to go threw, I was given 2 weeks when they found the (stage 4 T-3 cancer)in my throte, that was 4 1/2 years ago, and Ime sdtill here thanks to pot !

The biggest thing to do next is to move cannabis from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3. Marinol, synthetic THC, is Schedule 3, due to its excellent safety record.

Support NORML in their efforts towards rescheduling. Decrim and eventually legalization will follow!

Then worry about the UN single convention treaty...

You know what could come about if pot was legalized? Tax payers money would actually be put to good use, instead of paying for overcrowding jail cells. This could also help the economy, no shit. Not just by taxing marijuana, but in the industrial use of hemp is almost endless. This would bring the unemployment rate down for jobs in the industrial area. Pot is a VERY universal element in this world. Not just a drug. Then there is the medical uses of marijuana. Helps decrease the possibility of Alzheimer's. And also an anti-depressant!? Come on people it is not that bad.

LISTEN UP! WE, as a society, need to post rational and logical ideals written in a well thought out format. Otherwise you are just reinforcing the stereotype about pot users.I read thes postings all over the web and the trend is prevelant. Please help the cause by caring enough to think before you post.
Thank You For Your Time.

The reason pot is still technically illegal in the Netherlands, and everywhere. Nixon era 1971 UN International Narcotics Control Board. They fooled me with the .org at the end of their name. You would be breaking the treaty to make pot legal. This law has to come down first of all. Or start breaking treaties . . .
