“Hey—let’s get the dog stoned!”

You’ve heard it before. Hell, you might’ve even been the one who said it—at a party, or when you were bored with some friends, or maybe when it was just you and your pet and you didn’t want to smoke alone.

Whether it’s a dog, a cat, a hamster or a long-haired chinchilla, the fact is that people seem to like the idea of getting animals high. And why not? It’s not a malicious act—most times it comes from kind intentions: wanting to share with your furry (or scaly, or feathery) friend that which gives you such great pleasure.

But maybe giving reefer to Rover isn’t as good an idea as you think. Before you presume to know or dismiss the effects of pot on your pet, ask yourself these questions: Which stoner symptoms transfer over from man to beast? Do you know what to do if your dog eats an entire baggie of marijuana? And what of the ethical responsibility of owning and caring for another living being?

To understand the effects of THC on animals, we first must understand its effects on humans. THC works by attaching itself to specific receptors in the brain, which exist specifically to receive cannabinoids. The body naturally produces its own cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids) at specific times, which scientists suspect help to regulate pain relief and/or memory. Since THC and endocannabinoids share almost the same molecular structure, they can both connect to cannabinoid receptors, and thus both produce a “high” effect. Most living things possess cannabinoid receptors—including invertebrates.

This is important for two reasons: First, it means these receptors have survived at least 500 million years of evolution (dating back to the time when vertebrates and invertebrates split), implying that the function of these cannabinoids is pretty damn important; and second, it means that most everything alive can get stoned—even something as simple as a slug.

my dog loveeesss weed! ha everytime i'm smoking in the house with some friends he always tries to follow the rotation. One of my friends had a bag in her pocket once, and bailey came right up and started sniffing around the pocket. She switched the bag to the other pocket and of course, he jumped off the couch and got on the other side of her and started sniffing that one.
he's a fiend!

My old cat LOVED to be in the room when we smoked. She was old and her bones ached and I truly believed the smoke helped her. Whenever we lit up, she would come from the other room and plop down right next to us. We would blow smoke in her direction and she always raised her nose and breathed it in. She would sit in the smoke circle for as long as she needed, then go lie down next to the fireplace. So mellow cat... I sure do miss her. She lived a long happy 15 years and finally just couldn't do it anymore. RIP Miss Kitty.. sure do miss ya. =(

I blow hits at my cat moe all the time. He loves it, every time I walk into my room he follws me. He knows where i keep the weed and he rubs on the drawr and smells it. I'm positive that it's keeping him happy and healty

me and my finance just got a pet rat and we blow pot smoke at her all the time, and she always stands up and sticks her nose in the air to smell it...then after a while of smoking with her she starts running around and hopping around and you can't catch her. haha shes really funny. then she stops and eats and then goes to sleep. and if you leave roaches around she'll grab them and run away and starts to eat them (but we always take them away from her...i don't think the paper would be good for her stomach, or the ash). hahaha she's really weird.

no lie my dog whos 8 use to have seizures once a month for years but never enough that warranted medical use said the vets, very horrible thought he would die even while having one was possible, so two years ago i moved out on my own and took the dog with me,*never use to smoke weed in parents house, well since we were always smoking in my new house, guess he breathed it or something but not kidding, he hasnt' had a seizure since, been 2 years after having them basically oftern, to none or maybe one but i havent seen it, so looked online about marijuan effects,and bam" controls brain activity associaed with epilepsy and seizures" guess it is a good thing,**Attention cruelty people , we only use vaporizer and he gets a whiff of that!!! believe me this stuff works for some people or pets, period

we give our chinchilla stems and pot leaves and he loves them sometimes he does flips in his cage and when we let him out to play he jumps off the walls. He is a funny lil guy and even funnier when he stoned!!

Dear Departed Daisy, our pet rat loved shotgun hits. She lived well beyond the 3 years they are suppose to, she was 5 when she passed. Was it because of the Cannabis?? One wonders...I have also seen it administered to over hyper dogs to mellow them out! Mike Vick should have done that instead. He'd be playing and helping me with my fantasy football scores. Rock on people, its 4:20!!

I once had a turtle named nippy.He loved getting stoned.I personally never saw any negative effects,but the funny thing was that we did not mind sharing,but the damn thing would not let go so we had to make him a special mouth piece from a black and mild it was all good;)

hey guys i got a bearded dragon (reptile about 2 feet long) recently he ate half a gram of some green bud and he slept for about 6 hours after and then ate 13 crickets and wanted more and more im just woundering if this is dangerous because if not i wouldnt mind smoking with him blowing some hits in his face or allowing him to eat more marijuana, if anyone could help id appreciate it.

My dog Duke, was a hyper little dog, it was soo annoying. Till I thought to get him high. That night he actually sat still and got petted for the first time. changed our lives. He comes running when he smells it now and is just the bestest doggie ever!

me and my friend get our cats high, it dose nothing but calm them down, and they get munchies too. I personally think its fun to share with them, theyre your friends, they cuddle with you when its time for bed. i love smoking weed its one of my most fav. things to do so why not le your fuccy lil friend join in?

I admit to getting... quite a few animals high, but never forcefully. I had two dogs, one of which liked the smoke and would just chill with us and we'd blow him some hits, and another who didn't like the smoke but liked to roll in and eat bud. She was only 14 pounds and a blunt roach tore her up, haha. I also have an African Grey Parrot and two cats, all of whom don't seem to mind the smoke at all. I've definately seen Heath, my rat, stoned out of his brains.
You should never forcefully blow smoke into an animals face... like people, some like weed and some don't.

one of my good friends had a dog named sady. training her was really difficult given her hyper personality....they tried everything dog treats table scraps everything!! the only dog treat that ever worked for this dog was stems. it was the greatest thing cuz instead of worrying bout what to do with stems after rolling a doobie...(except making potka) we always had someone to take care of the stems for us. Thanks Sady!!

Well my Dog Bruizer has been with the family for over two years now and we have made it a daily habit to share the second hand smoke with the dog and Bruizer seemz to like WAKE N BAKE and 420 everyday; LOL every time we light up we call out Bruizer Buddy in to share. He does seem do be doing good i have noticed that he lookz forward to joining the circle

My dog of 13 years was dying of bone cancer. I love that dog and would not hurt him ever! When the heavy narcotics the doctors give him started to fade I watched him cry in pain trying to rest so I decided to take some of my California legal medical marijuana and blow it into his ear and nose. Remarkably he stopped crying and was able to sleep but not until he wrecked his food bowl which he hadn't touched in days. He and I got stoned for a month until the cancer took him but it made a terrble situation better for both of us. I know he appreciated it.

Ok, you cannot call this animal cruelty. If you choose to blow a hit to your animal, it will obviously react to it. Like people animals will react differently to it. If it is a bad reaction, you most likely will not do it again. If your pet enjoys, then you will notice it as other people have said their pet will come and wait for a hit. Let the animal decide if it likes it or not, because like people, animals will learn from an experience. So if your a person who disagrees with this, go *#@! yourself.

No man I can see both sides. It is wrong to force anyone (animals included) to smoke. But we can choose to enjoy, and I think animals do as well. I had a cat who was a smoker named Hashish. He would come up & sit in the circle till he got a hit or two, then go munch or lay down. My sis' dog Paco will actually sit up & do tricks if you show her a good nug.

I am into feeding my ex's dog a(wiener dog) little bits when I am over at her place. I was eating Ganja Butter Cinnommin toast, not thinking I threw him half a piece of and about 35 mins later he had turned into a pointer dog and was just standing there, with glazed over eyes, in a point stance. Looking at the wall. I thought something had happened to him as he was about to pass out. Paranoid? Then I "remembered" the Breakfest we shared as he slepted silently for about 5 hrs..he woke up like he was a new dog. But has changed to a no-cannabinoid diet since.

Years ago I had a Lilac Point Siamese cat that had a resporatory problem. He would wheeze and have trouble breathing. When my friends would come by to smoke the cat would follow the joint around the circle as if he enjoyed the smoke. We decided to shotgun him and he sucked in an entire hit through his nose. He then crawled into a comfortable spot and began breathing free and clear. From then on every time we would sit around and smoke the cat would follow the joint around until he got his hit or two and then he would go off, get comfortable and breath. He made the choice himself to smoke and it was very obvious how much easier it would be for him to breath after having a little herb.

Yeh it seems simple if i am 93kgs and my poodle is 7kgs just give it like one/15th of what i have. But it eats about one/13th of its body weight in food a day and i eat more along the lines of one/22nd. And to further compund confussion it seems to play with it genitals one/3rd of the time where i probably average one/48th. can dogs be hedonistic, if so i'd say a poodle is a good candidate. i get it a $130 haircut every other week and it likes that yet i barely manage to get by shaving mine quarterly and never clean it. i guess we clean our teeth equally as i have to do both of ours, also we both enjoy bro' town and futurama so i guess yeh my dog must be high like me!

My 7lb chihuahua named Ralph ate close to 2 grams of chronic and he was comatose for over a day. I cried, called the animal hospitals, but after 2 days of forcing water down his throat and 24 hour care he pulled out of it and thankfully hasn't shown any side effects. I have since learned a 1/2 tsp of peroxide will make a dog vomit. Pumpkin pie mix in their food will make their bowls move.
I love my dog and if you love your dog or pet keep your weed put up...dogs have a good life with the right owner, pot smoker or not.

oh and it is possible to get fish stoned we used to blow down the air pipe to my tropical tank and they mingled without eating each other...although the siamese did start displaying his fins at his reflection a lot more. anyway not one fish died so your gear must have been awesome... and yes i have left uni now and i am a respectable reformed animal owner who still smokes, although now more carefully

my friends really expensive dog ate some solid once,by mistake i add,and the poor thing was just sat staring at the wall and falling over it was only bout an henry so was normal after about 2hrs but my cat ate my weed and just ran around the walls for 30mins leaping at my dog every so often.do not let your pets eat it,do as i have and buy a box4your gear...guess cats n dogs really are different..aintit cute BUT ITS WRONG!!!!!

I have this chow and he knows where I keep my pips when I tell him to get my pipe,he goes and get it and lays in front of me with the pipe between his paws and barks,then I take out my bag and pack it then light it andtake a big hit and blow it in his face,he smokes 2 full bowls with me,then he goes to his bowl and chow down.

Every time I go out to smoke a "J" my cat comes running. He lays in my lap on his back while I blow hits in to his face. He loves it. When he knows he's had enough(which is about 3 or 4 hits)he goes and lays on the couch and just chills.

We had a scare with my friends dog. He couldn't walk, stand, wouldn't eat a piece of chicken in front of his nose (this dog is a TOTAL chow hound). He was totally unresponsive. We rushed him to the animal hospital where they pumped his stomach.
Turns out he had scarfed about 5 roaches out of the ashtray when we were out of the room.
I don't know about other animals, but dogs definitely don't react well to pot.
Good thing the Vet was cool because their usual protocol is to call the SPCA and that's followed by a visit by John Q Law.
About $350.00 later we took the dog home where it took him about 24 hours to get back to normal.
Unless you're pet asks you to get high don't do it.

when my dogs get into my butter it looks like they are on acid, shooms, and drunk at the same time. but they dont like it, it really freaks them out. or it will make them not move for somtimes 8 hours at a time, loose control of they bladders. and it can kill them if they get into stuff like butter or hash.

My Uncle used to feed his doberman nugs all the time he must of realy thought they was tasty, because one day a buddy of his came over with a homegrown branch in his jacket sleeve(the dumb ass sat his jacket on the floor)and went in the other room, when they came back it was just chewed up peices of slobbery STEM!!!

My chihuahua and cat love fresh water leaf, dry stuff not so much (lucky me). and yes they do get glazey an happy they seem to know how much they can handle though, and I have never met an animal that likes smoke blown in their face. I once saw a hamster die on the wheel from Habitrail bong rips, not a good trip.

bought a mouse from a pet shop for somethin like �2.50 and fed it little bits of skunky and blew smoke on it. it seemed to enjoy it.

died about 2 days later cause some asswipe fed it half an ecstasy tablet.

I have a dog who is 11 and will be 12 this month who loves pot when i smoke she will come up to me and i will blow it in her face and she will sneeze a lot and usually comes back for more. My boyfriends 3 boston terriers love it to they always know when were smokeing and come chill with us they usually burrow under the covers when they dont want anymore. I also had a mean iguana and i gave it a shotgun and it was nicer. I read that cats do not have the cannabinoid receptors. It sounded true to me cause me and my best friend smoked her cat out and its always acted a little wierd.

My yellow labrador, Daisy was diagnosed with terminal cancer and the vet gave her 6 months to live. I was DEVASTATED! She started loosing weight and just not as happy as she was before. I had been a previous smoker so I took it up again and started getting her stoned sometimes 3 times a day- well she maintained her weight until her final 10 days and she was happy wagging her tail until the very end. The best part is I had her for a whole YEAR after her diagnosis- adding a full 6 months to her life expectancy. I very thankful that I had that time with her. Since then I have stopped smoking, but if any of my pets go through that I will not hesistate to start up smoking again!!

I have a 3+ year old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, that is beyond hyper. The only way I can get her to calm down enough so that I don't kill her, is to get her every bit as baked as myself- then, she flops on the floor and chills.

Until the next jay is lit, anyhow :) Then she is up everyone's ass to get another toke.

From my sis-in-law the vet- pot is exactly as harmful to dogs as it is to humans. Dogs were never meant to be smokers, either, so pot smoke can damage their lungs just as it damages ours. Eating it is far safer.

I live alone and tried it with my ferrets in a situation where I didn't want to smoke alone. They always hang around me while I chill, but I didn't want to commit "animal abuse" as some consider it. But after I read this article I gave it a go. One absolutely hates the smell/smoke/everything, no bueno for him. The other (the spaz) he steals it from me when its my turn now. And always inturrupts my hits so he can have some. He loves it enough to know what it does for him and where it comes from, he gets a munchie and then chills at the computer with me afterward. A roommate had a kitten once. About 8 weeks old. HE started getting it stoned at around 14 weeks if I remember correctly. Because he was so young, it really had screwed him up development wise. He was about 8 months when he ran away. Ate pretty much a 1/4 OZ to himself and ran away. Still don't know what happened to that cat. So, I recommend from experience you wait until it's at least full grown, or you might just mess that animal up.....

Had a persian kitten years ago that got into my grow room and ate a plant that was about a foot tall. He was stoned for about a week. Just layed around sleeping and eating. He would get up and walk three or four steps then just flop down and go to sleep. From that time on whenever I would light up he would come over and get in my face until I gave him a hit or two.

Honestly, my dog loves the pot! She's a 9 year old boxer and when she smells it, she is right in your face, sitting down giving her paw until you blow it in her face. She absolutely loves to eat the roach, if you leave a half a piece in the ashtray, she'll eat it as well. The vet is still surprised at how hyper and healthy she is. I actually think that pot helps keep them young and free of pain!

My first dog, Brooklyn, hated pot. When I would go to exhale a puff to her face, she'd turn around as far as she could, usually escaping the room, not before knocking over the lamp by the bed. Anyways, my new dog, Bentley (oh yeah, they're both Jack Russels, the best dog EVER!), ok, anyhoo - Bentley loves pot. Ummm... That's about it.

i get my pets high no problem they seem to love it but i do have a cat that runs from the smoke so if they dont like it they can run but my other pets9dogs they love it so i think its up to the animal

i love getin stoned with my dog and im pretty sure hes just as much of a stoner as me if i leave nugs sitin on my table or something if i dont pay attention it'll end up in his mouth whenever i grab my bub to go hot box he always makes me take him he'll occasionally hit blunts or pipes through his nose and ill take him on a walk or something afterwards and he'll have a blast if hes not passed out from bein to stoned.. but yeah im all for animals getin loaded why be selfish and keep mary jane to ourselves do your pets a favor blow some bong loads into their faces

Contradictory to the countless hours of animals rights work I've contributed to, I did inadvertently provide my rescued cat with the unconscious exhale of a 50x salvia-kush-widow blend. We became wizards in a landscape of energy surrounded by illumination and chanting from all sides of the room. Mr Donald the cat is 14 y.o. and definitely made uncharacteristic, quick motions as if hallucinating visually (and without the ontological shock thing, seemed interested but not distressed). yeah, I've got a police trained german shepard. hey, atleast its one less off the force. He smokes with me all the time and loves it. he knows the word weed and can sniff it out with ease. when I misplace a sac or blunt I just tell him to find the weed and guarantee he'll get it. so useful. he can smell it on people too, he only jumps up on people who smell like weed, its hilarious. one time he ate prolly about 2 gs (one bite) out of my sack. I thought he'd get fucked but he didnt show any signs

My little kitten, Kush, is the best smoking buddy i could ever ask for. She will sniff out my buds and if they are good she will lay besides me and if they dont reach her standards she walks away. She has a knack for finding plants, willing to rip them out of the dirt and carry them off to her hiding place.

I love my kitten, and if she really didn't want to smoke she could walk away.

My dog loves to eat pot leaves. When I trim my plants I will toss him a few leaves. A couple times he has made it into the veg room and eaten up to 8 seedlings at a time. Little bastard.

man i swear the best thing to get stoned is a bat. this house i use to live in we mad it on the website this past 420 well about a month later we caught a bat that was in my room and right before we let it go i said lets get it high. so 6 average guys who know how to hit a bong just ripped on the bong. and i have never seen an animal that high he couldnt even fly away after we were done. we all geeked for about an hour.

My pit hates smoke... everytime I light up she runs and hides in the corner and when I'm done she comes back and chills... She just doesn't like the smell of it... and I never really try to get her high because I know she doesn't like it.

my dog is a complete stoner when he smells the weed or smoke he comes runnin to your lap and when you blow it in his face his tail instantly goes down (it is always up, it brokeded) and he licks his lips... i love it and i think he does too... also that whole evolution thing should prove to people that maybe we are wanted to smoke weed possibly to give us the feeling that adam & eve had all the time okay maybe not but god sent the earth a miracle plant which is in one of the Exodus entries but I think we found it and people who appreciate it DON"T GO AND MAKE IT ILLEGAL

You know how as soon as you say walkies your dog starts goin crazy lookin for its lead, well my dog recognises the word blowbacks, I'll say "gypsy, Blowbacks" and she'll come and sit next me with her nose in the air waiting for a blowback. The downside to this being that not only does my dog annoy the fuck out of me wwhen im eating, she also pesters for a few tokes when i light up.

Used to have a parakeet that loved to help clean a bag. Just leave it on the coffee table and here he comes, lands on the table, and eventually would crawl into the bag to get more seeds. He usually missed the cage door when flying back home!
