Unsigned Bands: Boot Pie

Thu, Nov 30, 2006 1:58 pm

Boot Pie

It all began with two college ex-roommates getting together in NYC to form a kick-ass rock band. With Tyler Land on the drum kit and Mark Bohrer on bass, they set up a series of auditions for a guitar player through an ad in the Village Voice.  They auditioned over 60 guitarists and when they got to Frank Max, they knew without a doubt that they had their new guitarist.

Frank knew a local Scottish dude with whom he would occasionally put back a few pints of porter at Milano's on Houston Street. It turns out the guy never actually sang before but he was from Glasgow and the band figured it would take some time for people to figure out what the hell he was saying anyway, which would give him some time to hone his craft. They drank, partied, jammed and wrote dozens of new songs. With the new band name Grannie, they embarked on a series of gigs throughout NYC.

The band played a vicious alcohol fueled set and started to attract attention from various indie A/R people. Pressure was mounting and the band began fighting at rehearsals. With A/R people showing up at shows, the band self-destructed and Grannie died a sudden death. Band members went their separate ways knowing they left some good music on the table.

Fast forward to 2006. HIGH TIMES magazine is throwing a party downtown and Frank pulls the band back together for the show. Hesitantly, they call the Scottish dude and he agrees to a few rehearsals but the night of the gig, he's a no-show.  The band waits and, finally, with Frank on vocals, decides to go on with an improvised set.  They find their groove and rock the house. With a solid gig as a trio under their belts and plenty of tunes in their heads, the band decides to move forward as Boot Pie (English slang for a "good kick in the teeth").

Two months later, with the help of a friend, Boot Pie is recording at Wyclef Jean's midtown studio, Platinum Sound. The songs, produced by Jamey Staub, kick some serious ass and this is just the beginning!!!

And there it is: Boot Pie. Have a slice!
