Down at the crossroads of music and marijuana, great things are known to happen. Toke a joint and new lyrics flow effortlessly. Inhale a hit and a song pours out like syrup onto pancakes.

Bill Hicks nailed it when he said that all the Beatles’ music was created under the influence of drugs. He joked that they had to pull Ringo off the ceiling when they wrote “Yellow Submarine.”

For years, we’ve cataloged marijuana music in the pages of HIGH TIMES. Not only do musicians write better stoned, but readers also enjoy listening better high. It’s that simple.

On Sept. 6, 2000, we hosted the Doobies, our first-ever awards show celebrating marijuana in music. At New York’s now-defunct jam-band joint Wetlands Preserve, the Kottonmouth Kings were named Band of the Year and performed on a bill that included Dope, Charlie Hunter, David Peel, Atomic Bitchwax and the Cannabis Cup Band. A fully inebriated Jackie (the Joke Man) Martling emceed the five-hour Doobies marathon.

We scheduled the 2nd Annual Doobies for Sept.12, 2001. That show never took place—we all know what happened on the morning of Sept. 11. We gave out awards to winners whenever they came through New York City during that devastating fall and winter.

With Wetlands’ doors shuttered, we moved the 3rd Annual Doobies uptown to our new awards-show home at BB King’s in Times Square. On Sept. 25, 2002, Fear Factor’s Joe Rogan hosted a show that saw performances by Sean Paul, High on Fire, Black Moon, Lettuce, the Cannabis Cup Band and a reunion of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. One of the highlights that night was Dave Chappelle presenting Pot Song of the Year to Paul for “Gimme the Light.”

With this issue, the Doobies returns as an awards presentation in the pages of HIGH TIMES. Next year, we’ll once again stage a full-fledged awards show. The winners of this year’s Doobies are:

I have lived in both California and Pennsylvania, and i have to say that california is the best spot to get B.C. Buds as well as some great state-grown bud. Ozs. only cost 250-300 dollars in Cali way better some some of that $400 BS that happens in PA. Name of exotic strains get lost when it travels, and alot of the east coast bud is imported. In california, you always get the name. so if i had to choose i would go with the cheaper less handled buds. peace..

listen, canadian bud is all top notch stuff. Just immagin the best bud you get and that is it, pot is everywere to a point were its hard to sell pot because EVERyone has a friend who sell so you cant have big buisness unles youv benn going at it for a while.

I cant speak for the west coast, but out of the shit ive tried from down south and from the east coast. The east coast takes the cake. There is far more THC in east coast bud. The only thing about the east is there isnt as big of a market in states like maryland, vermont, New Hamsphire, etc... as there is in the south.

i went to all Doobies and all of Stony's, and i got to tell you i had the most fun i have ever had in any gathering like that. I was very dessaponted when they stopped it. And thrilled to have it come back. To those who never been to any its a must go. Keep up doing a great job guys.
