EDDIE BRAVO: MARIJUANA MARTIAL-ARTS MASTER

Interview by Scott Ross

When he started taking jiu-jitsu lessons in 1994, inspired by Brazilian jiu-jitsu icon Royce Gracie’s dominance in the early years of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, Eddie Bravo was a guitar player just looking for a way to stay in shape so that he wouldn’t be a “fat rock star” when his band made it big.

The band broke up, but Bravo’s jiu-jitsu blew up. He started smoking marijuana, which he readily credits with helping him develop his radical style of jiu-jitsu in his second book, Mastering the Rubber Guard, which offers step-by-step instructions on Bravo’s favorite jiu-jitsu techniques, as well as a lengthy endorsement of marijuana use.

His style of jiu-jitsu is considered revolutionary and/or heretical, depending on whom you ask. He is notorious for his dismissive attitude towards the gi—the traditional uniform worn by the practitioners of most martial arts of Asian origin—as an “an ancient superhero outfit” that teaches students nothing more than bad habits.

Bravo proved the merit of his ideas at the 2003 Abu Dhabi World Submission Wrestling Championships, the pinnacle event of submission grappling, by prevailing against the legendary Royler Gracie—an archetype of the system that Bravo was rejecting—in a win that shocked the world. That victory legitimized Bravo’s theories, launching the 5-foot-8, 160-pound California native into the upper echelon of the martial-arts world.

Today, Bravo is a commentator for the UFC, with plans on competing only once more before retiring from the tournament circuit for good. He continues to spread his brand of jujitsu at Tenth Planet, his own Hollywood-based school, and with seminars across the globe. His third book will be released this summer. His techniques are constantly gaining in popularity, especially with notable MMA (mixed martial arts) fighters like Dean Lister and Japan’s Shinya Aoki, who demonstrate their effectiveness with wins at the highest levels of competition.

Bravo unabashedly recommends marijuana, saying that it will not only improve your jujitsu game, but also your life. His openness with regard to pot has been criticized by some: Isn’t Bravo aware that he’s a respected figure, that there are young people who look up to him, that’s he’s a role model?

Yes, he is, as a matter of fact. That’s the point.

How does jiu-jitsu with a gi differ from jiu-jitsu without a gi?
With gi jiu-jitsu, you use yanking and pulling to set everything up. You grab the collar and you yank and pull—it’s like a big tug of war. When you’re going no-gi, there’s no yanking and pulling, just clinching and squeezing. It takes a while to get it down.

People frequently describe your style of jiu-jitsu as “unorthodox.” What’s so different about your style?
If you concentrate just on no-gi jiu-jitsu, the game totally changes: the rubber guard, the twister set-ups, the half-guard stuff—even my mount is different. If you’re working both gi and no-gi, you’re not going to have enough time to develop a pure no-gi style.

The only reason I started focusing on no-gi was that if I ever lost my job, I might need to fight to make some money. At the time, I was DJing in a strip club, writing music and training jiu-jitsu. And if I was going to fight, I wanted my jiu-jitsu to be as mixed-martial-arts-ready as possible. MMA is dedicated to grappling and mixed martial arts; I wouldn’t have had enough time to catch up on my kickboxing and my wrestling if I were revamping my jiu-jitsu.

Luckily, I didn’t have to do MMA. Basically, tapping out Royler Gracie made it so I didn’t have to do MMA. It allowed me to just teach jiu-jitsu and concentrate on my music. If I had to go into MMA, it would have been a big blow to my music, because training for MMA is like training for the Olympics.

Cannabis has a 'let you do' rather than a 'make you do'
influence, which translates [for me] into more effective
floor work generally.. The stretching and movement
you - want to do - with smoothness, coordination,
extension beyond basic 'stretching' and good
actual effectiveness,, is or tends to be
allowed or, facilitated, with cannabis..

- using - here does not, mean overdosing..
Most people unaware of, dosage,
typically overdose..

Good quality homegrown recommended..
Go for cbd rather than thc content..

Paddy, sorry man I read your comments too fast and thought you were mf-ing Eddie. Sorry again. And to GB all those comments I just made toward patty should have been aimed toward you. You have no idea what you're talking about. You should come into the gym one night so we can kick your ass.

Paddy its obvious by your comments that you're a total idiot. Anyone that fights or grapples will agree that Eddie Bravo is one of the greatest grapplers ever. He has proven himself against the best of the best and has added as much or more technique than any one person in the present. Including the Gracies. Maybe you should shut up, get off YOUR fat ass and try grappling, or even jogging for starters. But then again I'm sure that would be too much like work. It would be much easier for you to run your mouth about stuff you know nothing about.

I have one thing to say to you. Shut up fucko! You dont have a clue about what your talking about. He says it very clearly in the interview, he loves to teach and he's a musician. You cant have both MMA and the teaching/music lifestyle. Keep your comments to yourself. I bet your just another fat ass, couch commentator who cant even do more then lift his fingers to troll on the net. Again, shut up fucko!

i have been training martial arts for about 7 years now.. and i have been smoking weed for about 2 now. i have say consuming marijuana makes my arts flow more gracefully, and martially, then when not on a marijuana induced

hell ya...smoke weed. but pay attention to self defense as opposed to competition. the gracie family, along with russian police, and shaolin monks, and straight up street fighters like myself, have a much better grip on reallity than no-gi guru. but dont get on the mat with eddie or royler when no fish hooks are allowed:)

lappas

Aug 9 2009, 12:16 am

but on the street tapping means death. rubber guard is only good for sport. a good punch to the adams apple, or kick to the groin, or kneck chomp is ok with me:)

lappas

Aug 9 2009, 12:07 am

noone who has commented so far has any idea what kind of mastery is involved in tapping out royler or eddy. so keep your stupid comments for your backyard, hooligan, redkneck, buddies:)

eddie bravo is a coward. he hasnt competed since 03. probably because he knows that if he did, he would be man handled by almost everyone he would go against. the level has stepped up and he cant stay with it. lets see him beat marcelo garcia, bruno frazatto, rafael mendes, or sergio moraes. there is no way that he would last the round with guys like that. hes a coward and he beat a guy once and then retired, where is the honor in the sport when you dont at least try to defend your title at least once. maybe he should put down the ganja and start to train with real men.

smoking weed alows to capture the pure essence of jiu jitsu. It is the gentle art that can only truly appreciated through Marijuana smoking. As a decorated jiujitsu competitor i believe marijuana enhances performance.Marijuana enhances your creativity and makes your jiujitsu flow more beautifully. Jiu jitsu is so beautiful becuase everyone learns the same moves but no1 has the same game. I disagree with Bravo's stance on dismissing the gi game. It is necesary to train with a gi to capture the essence of pure jiujitsu. You have to understand where all these techniques came from and how they were derived into no gi. Jiu jitsu like other sports is constantly evolving. There are many methods on how to enhance your jiujistu such as the gracie diet, or Alvaro romanos ginastica natural excersizes which took jiujitsu mobility to the next level, and now marijuana will be revolutionary in enhancing you creativity in jiujitsu which will take the sport to new levels.

i doubt that was Rickson making that comment. Rickson has more class than to make a comment like that one. Bravo Eddie!
you are an inspiration as a martial artist and a musician.
Best of luck in all that you do. Please remember that alot of people are in need of positive role models these days and alot of people are watching you. Looking forward to what the future brings for you. LB

first of all bjjfan your a douche. just because eddie got "spanked" by leo makes him automatically inferior get out of here. the gracies royler, royce, renzo and ryan(RIP) all got "spanked" by Kazushi Sakuraba the Gracie Hunter does that make them not good practitioners or teachers, no. eddie bravo represents one of the first(my opinion) inavative Jiu Jitsu practioners out there. i mean the methodology, studying and research that he gave into the sport was revolutionary. his transitions, setups and submissions are way ahead of anyones game that still rely on wrist, which you can see in mma is doesnt work that well. he is breed of the Jiu Jitsu practitioners that bring evolution to the table. Keep making Jiu Jitsu evolve Eddie because bjjfan is far from evolving let alone knowing that hes a dummy.

What most people don't know is that Eddie got spanked by Leo Vieira (Brasa Jiu-Jitsu) 19-0. Leo passed his guard 9 times in 10 minutes! Leo was the winner of the division(not Eddie). I'd like to see a rematch between Eddie and Royler. Since Abu Dhabi 2003, I don't believe Eddie has competed since!

Props to Eddie for catching Royler (everyone can make a mistake), but I sincerely doubt he could do it again.
