Fertilizing Your Plants
I have a question about which fertilizer to use during seedling, vegetative and flowering growth. Please recommend brands and their corresponding nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium percentages. I don’t want to burn them with too much nitrogen at any stage of growth. BTW, I’m growing in soil.
-- Timmy G, Amarillo, TX

Dear Timmy,

First, you have to start with good soil. Look for a rich organic blend such as Garden-Ville potting soil. It’s made from compost, Canadian peat moss, perlite, orange sand, cedar flakes and other ingredients. I’m not crazy about cedar flakes because they take up nitrogen to decompose, but the level is low. They also help provide drainage and aeration. Look for a good local brand of store-bought organic soil.

The water from Amarillo comes from Lake Meredith (60%) and groundwater (40%). Amarillo is in farm country, and farm chemicals and fertilizers could leave the water tainted. Request a water analysis from your local water district (to determine the pH) and a list of dissolved solids in the water. If the level of sodium is more than 50 ppm and the total dissolved solids level is more than 300 ppm, you should treat the water with reverse osmosis to remove dissolved salts. The pH should be between 6 and 7 for good nutrient uptake.

There are many good organic fertilizers to use. A partial list includes Canna, Earth Juice, Fox Farm and Formula X. Use the fertilizers as directed for seedling, vegetative and flowering growth. You should also purchase a biostimulant to increase fertilizer uptake and soil life. Biostimulants often contain humic acid, fulvic acid, trichoderma, and a host of good microbes and bacteria that promote growth. Many companies carry biostimulants.

Vegetative plants need a full range of macronutrients and micronutrients and use a lot of nitrogen, which washes out of the soil quickly and must be replaced regularly. Some strains, such as Sweet Tooth and Big Bud, are incredibly easy to grow and can take high doses of fertilizer.

Change to flowering fertilizer a few days after turning the light to a 12/12 day/night schedule. Flowering fertilizer should contain higher levels of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) and less nitrogen (N). Adding an additional PK 13-14 supplement for the last four weeks before harvest will swell buds to a nice, tight, compact mass.

Blotches
I have two leaves that have a kind of white blotch on them. They’re rectangular in shape. Are they going to turn yellow due to not enough nitrogen? Or is there something else going on?

-- Crazy B
Ohio

Dear Crazy,

Nutrient problems usually appear fairly consistently on groups of leaves. If all older leaves start to turn yellow or discolor, it’s a mobile nutrient problem. Mobile nutrients move to the point in the plant where they are needed. If a group of leaves all react the same way, it’s probably a nutrient problem. For example, if the problem occurs on just one or two leaves close to one another, they could have experienced wind or heat stress. This would cause the blotches.

Blotches can come from many sources. Normally they’re dark rather than light, which confuses the issue. My guess is that the leaves that have been affected are older leaves. The blotches have been probably found in between leaf veins. This would lead me to think it’s a deficiency of phosphorous, potassium and magnesium.
Check ventilation and airflow, and keep the light far enough away from the plant so that it doesn’t burn. A 400-watt lamp should be no closer than 12 to 18 inches from the garden canopy.

Give the plants a good flushing with quarter-strength nutrient solution. Leach pots with three times the volume of solution as there is volume of soil. This should get your garden back on track.
-JC

im tired of all these stupid questions.if your gonna invest any money at all in something you need too research it. and for the retards by researching i dont mean ask a wuestion and hope someone answers you. i mean spend a little more on a grow bible or even easier buy goerges first grow dvd. your simple questions will be explained so u can understand them.i understand u gotta start somewhere but do it right. lets make a good name for ourselves as a pot smoking society and literaly stop taking credit for all the criticism.dont be fools making yourself look stupid and then blaming it on the joint u smoked 5 minutes ago. blame it on the user because alot of us smokers do it to keep ourselves at bay and not always for partying use.be smart and love life. Homegrown Hydroponics is a rip-off!

They send cheap crap, WAY overprice it, refuse to answer emails, package poorly AND didn't even send the nutrients I paid for. They still will not answer thier emails or send the nutrients!

DON'T waste your money on these thieves "looks like a computer" grow box, or anything else they make either!

There are so many good companies out there, why suffer the aggravatrion I did but dealing with a shitty one?

-Pruneing-

I have an indoor crop, and I was wondering if it be a good ideal if i pruned my plants that are 3 weeks into the flowering cycle?would it strees the plant harsh enough to stunt the growth of the plant? Also the plants have a 7-8 week flowering cycle, if that info is needed.

youngest grower, if your plants are mo.s old then its prob. time to go to 12 hrs light,12 hrs dark. only then will they bud. TOTTALLY DARK NO CHECKIN ON THEM!! give them a week or two and they will start, remember if you identify males KILL THEM.

you can make your plant mature faster by changing light hours around but you only get and extra day for every 2 weeks, so really its not going to get them through much faster... if any only a few days.
the maximum thc production happens at 12/12 anything other than this and they are just loosing resin content.
the only thing I could suggest is flower them until you are ready to move and harvest them, they might not be fully mauture, but will be smokable with a fair bit of kick still. you should still get enough for personal untill you get set up in the new place....
sorry mate but flowering times are pretty much set and with all the fucking around youll need to do you will only save a week at the MOST.
try spraying soda water, the C02 will speed the process up more than changing light hours....

under lights you need to keep your light about 8- 10 inches obove the canopy.
to keep them short you may need to tip it once or twice then as those branches grow up they can be kinked or tied down..this allows for the bottom branches to grow through, allowing it to bush out. I do this every 3 days just until the plant covers the pot then I flower.
but you say you dont want to tip ( top) it..want that big crown hey...other ways to keep you nodes closer is, use a metal Halide for vegitive growth...this doesnt strech the plant out as much...if you cant afford 2 lights, a MH, HPS then what I do is run my light for 20 - 22 hours this doesnt allow the plant to grow much at all...no dark period..keeping your nodes closer.
has this helped...?
check out this link and you can see what I meen about kinking over

I don't think I got spider mites. But I still don't know why they are turnin brown. They are about 3 mouths old and are still small the bigest one is like 12" and started to bud and I think its a male cuz its getin lil seed pod's blow the lil bud and leaves are really spred out. Other then that plant i have like 14 that are about 3 to 5 inches tall and 3 about 7 to 8 inches tall. i have 18 all together. Why are they so small when they are 3 mouths old? Any help would be appreciated thanks

Inspiration on light reflection. Instead of building walls on small garden, I glued about $20 worth of mylar onto large cut cardboard boxes and hung them from the rafters. I now have a highly reflective closet with an open top for heat escape. Also hooked up dryer hose to fan outlet and made a plenum over a cheapo box fan and now vent the light. cost $3

As an out doorsmen I prefer the rule of thirds.1dig 2only keep one third of dirt from hole.3mix together your fertilizer w/your h2o retention and dirt from hole this combined unit should be able to sustain your plant to the end.My personalone consists of 3 3-4lb rainbow trout tow shovelful of cow manure 2lb bag of vermeculite .I only water once a month nature does the rest.good luck.

Hey i got a planter flat that holds 72 plants. It has a 7 in dome and dip tray. 1 Do i have to use a heating pad for the roots if the room temp is around 75 drg? 2 Do i have to use lights? "do note these planst are going out side" If i should use lights what would be the cheapest lights i can use? I was thinking about using them Grow lights you buy from wal-mart? they look like a flood light but puts out the kind of light the plants need to grow. I think they come in 60 and 80 watts. " and i will only have them under the lights for maybe 4 weeks depending on the weather and the size of the plants" Thanks for you time.

Jan 5 2005, 12:08 pm

YOU WILL NEED fishing line, and drill two holes, an inch on top of dirt line. THIS technique is called supercroping and it works very well. ONCE the holes are done stik the line through both of them, like a U getting ready to chocke the stem,,, NEXT start bending the plant with your finger and tighten the line more and more every day until the plant touches the pot.YOU CAN slightly break the stem, but try not to break OFF. DO THIS when the plant gets transplanted from being root bound near sexing period. Do this right and you will get 30-60% more buds stikin up. Dont be afraid to bend cause they are not afraid to grow. AND YES, HYDRO GIVES YOU ALOT MORE YIELD, PROBABLY 3x WHAT YOU ARE GETING, AND BETTER TASTE. -bLaCk wIdOw

Jan 5 2005, 11:31 am

what is all this about bending the stem. will it work indoors,at what piont do you do it,how far up stem do you bend and most importently,WHY? is it that it shocks the plant,or just restricts water flow due to bending and lower buds get more water?????

Dec 15 2004, 3:05 pm

I guess I can start by saying that you will find the sex of your plant way..later down the line it sounds like. the best way that i can explain is that the female plant is in contact with a male plant then form large beds of seed to ensure the seeds will make it through the winter. when you disrupt this cycle you get large buds with no seeds so yes kill all males unless you want to get alot of seeds

the part of the plant where braches meet the stock is called a node. it is never too earliy to prune your plant but it is good to use a rule of thumb every three node i top which at first will feel like murder. you must cut right above the third node when you see the next set of leaves forming. trust me it will be okay!

You people are some absolute geniuses. Have you ever thought of just for once, shutting your word hole for long enough to read up on whatever it is that you are wanting to learn? I think that if you try this method of learning you will be verypleased with the results, in fact, so much so, that you may stop posting on public HIGH-traffic forums begging for information about such simple subject matter.

Get a book on it. George has many as does Mel Frank both no their shit inside out and will tell you everything you need to know, that Ed Ros... also knows his shit. If your growing indoors make shure you get an indoors book. Some company makes a product that you can add to water (like soluble fertilizer) and it will make the buds smell like strawberries or citrus or whatever it claims. I think the product may also flush excess nutrients from the plant tissues. This is critical if you want smooth smoke. Anyway I saw the stuff advertised in High Times and i am shure you could get it or at least info on it at a grow shop (homegrown hydroponics...)

I am wondering if there could possibly be any chemicals or contaminents in the tap water in my area. If there is a possibility then could I sanitize the water? I live in the Seattle area. Also I'd just like to say that the indoor bible is a great book man, good work!

Hey, has anyone ever herd of sweet tooth? I got 20 clones off a friend of a friend. In late June I planted them in really good spot but they were only 6 inches tall. I planted them all at tleast 3.5 feet apart. They took off like nothing i have ever seen, and i have seen a fair amount of weed grow over the years, the garden is now a sea of green with shoots and colas everywere. The plants average 6 feet in hight and are super bushy. I plucked no tops and one plant on the corner must have 30 branches at least two ( closer to three) feet long. They have been flowering for about 5 weeks and the buds look amazing, super thick and super crystally. The weed has a distinct sweet, fruity aroma. The growth pattern and shape of the leaves lead me to believe it is probably about 70% indica and 30% sativa. I grew juicyfruit one year and these plants look almost identical but grow faster and fuller, they also seem to be about three weeks later. I was just wondering if any seed company carries sweettooth. I plan to submit photos of the garden when the ladies are pretty much done.

I made sure that the seed was going to sprout by germinating it and planted it.. but I dont have the lights! If I have no special grow lights and am just using the sun through the window is my plant going to work or isnt it?! I dont know... oy... Im scared

ashley and frosty the best bet is to buy a book (there are hundreds) and stay dedicated to it, you will get better with time and have alot of fun the main thing is to try and learn by trial and error and what works best for you .A friend with expr is helpful but not needed I have made many decisions based on the advice of people who write in forums for cultivating. Point being that with a little want to and a lot of patience there is enough lititure and online advice to get you going.

White widow is a very easy plant...But skunk is even easier, if first timer??? Use miracle grow water coil organic soil, PLants love it and give happy looking buds. I also recomend Super Thrive, a bomb ass nutrien pushing your plants at their peak. Skunk colas reach 4-6 feet long!!!!
