Tourist Pot Ban Protested in Southern Netherlands

May Day is a celebration rooted in both the ancient pagan (honoring Spring) and the post-modern political (International Workers Day), so it seemed fitting that both tourists and coffeeshop owners in the Netherlands banded together on Tuesday to voice their collective opposition to the law that went into effect that day prohibiting all sales of cannabis to foreigners and only permitting a restricted number of registered local citizens to purchase pot.

Hope for Future of Coffeeshops After Collapse of Conservative Dutch Government

Since the 1970s, the Netherlands’ legendary cannabis coffeeshops have been officially “tolerated” by the government, meaning that while technically illegal, they’ve nonetheless operated openly, with hundreds of locations in Amsterdam alone selling limited amounts of marijuana to the public.

Despite their being tightly regulated and contributing considerably to the nation’s tourism industry, however, the conservative government has been steadily working to …More

Dutch Coffeeshop Ban Looms

The Dutch government appears to be moving ahead with plans to ban tourists from purchasing marijuana in coffeeshops. Although the Netherlands has long been known for liberal drug policies, “far-right political leaders” have spearheaded the new rules. According to a letter from Dutch health and justice ministers to the parliament, the ban is an effort to combat “nuisance and criminality associated with coffee shops and drug trafficking.”

Late last year the …More

Dutch City’s Ban on Cannabis Sales to Foreigners Justified According to Court Advisor

Yves Bot, the advocate general at the European Court of Justice, issued an opinion regarding the Dutch city of Maastricht’s ban on selling cannabis to non-residents. According to Bot the city has the right to ban sales of pot and hash to foreign customers as “drug tourism represents a genuine and sufficiently serious threat to public order in Maastricht.” Bot believes that such a ban is “necessary” to protect residents.

Court: Coffeeshop Owner Broke Cannabis Laws

The owner of Checkpoint, a Dutch coffeeshop in the town of Terneuzen, was fined 10 million euros ($13.3 million) and sentenced to 16 weeks in prison when a court decided that his business broke drug laws.

While cannabis is tolerated in the Netherlands, it is technically illegal and coffeeshops are not supposed to have more than 500 grams (18oz) on their grounds at any given time. Checkpoint was known for serving as many as 3,000 people in a day and, on more than one occasion, police …More
