The Marijuana Explosion

The number of Americans who use marijuana continues to increase annually. Never has it been clearer that the failed and destructive War on Pot must come to an immediate end.

By Jon Gettman

Marijuana is as popular in the US as it’s ever been. A look back over the last 25 years places the War on Pot in perspective: It really hasn’t changed a thing. Marijuana is still widely used, and efforts to enforce its prohibition are a wasteful, ineffective drain …More

Teenagers Wise Up

They know the difference between pot and heroin – even if the Drug Czar doesn’t.

Teens are “just saying no” to alcohol, cigarettes and other dangerous drugs in record numbers. Yet the Drug Czar and the mainstream media only want to talk about pot.

That’s the take-home message from the findings of the 2011 “Monitoring the Future” study. The survey, first instituted in 1975, annually polls the self-reported use of various licit …More

California Crackdown

The Cannabis Column

At an October 7 press conference federal prosecutors announced an ambitious and far-reaching crackdown on California’s medical marijuana dispensaries.

In a carefully crafted strategy the federal government is not targeting medical marijuana use or the non-profit supply of marijuana to patients. Instead the focus of federal policy has been placed on what they describe as an abuse of state law in California in order to profitably sell marijuana …More

Drug Czar Clashes with US Rep over Pot

Efforts by U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D-Tennessee) to sway the federal government to end their war on medical marijuana and pot in general were challenged by Gil Kerlikowske, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), also known as the “Drug Czar” – a particularly cynical federal appellation. Kerlikowske formally responded to a letter sent to him in September by Rep Cohen regarding the 2012 National Drug Control Strategy (which serves as …More

New Federal Govt. Survey: Pot Is America’s Drug of Choice

In yet another positive public opinion poll indicating the increasing popularity and acceptance of marijuana, a newly released survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (a branch of the U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services) revealed that 6.9 percent of all Americans 12 years of age and older (17.4 million people) used marijuana in 2010. These most recent pot use stats are up significantly from 2007, when 5.8 percent of people 12-and-up, or 14.4 million …More

NORMLizer – Facts Be Damned!

By Paul Armentano

The federal government appears incapable of telling the truth when it comes to marijuana or marijuana policy. The Drug Czar’s latest lie: that the increasing public discourse acknowledging the inherent failures of pot prohibition is stimulating marijuana use in teens.

“If young people don’t really perceive that [marijuana] is dangerous or of any concern, it usually means there’ll be an uptick in the number of kids who are using. …More

ONDCP 2011 Strategy Says Pot Is Addictive, Harmful

The Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) released its official 2011 Drug Control Strategy Monday. The unveiling comes on the heels of the DEA’s decision that cannabis should not be rescheduled due to its “high potential for abuse” with “no currently accepted medical use in treatment.”

The contents of the ONDCP’s 2011 strategy certainly hammer home the government’s position on pot. Here’s a sample:

Drug Czar's Office Won't Play Softball with Pot Advocates

According to a press release, the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s softball team, the Czardinals, once again spurned the One Hitters, a softball team made up of Washington, D.C.-area drug policy reform group members. It seems these two teams had a grudge match scheduled for May 25th, but the Czardinals (the team name an apparent reference to the Office’s director, the Drug Czar) canceled last minute.

Survey Finds More Teens Are Smoking Pot, Drug Czar Blames Medical Marijuana

“Young people are increasingly seeing marijuana as not dangerous,” according to the lead investigator at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, which just released a study that found an increase in marijuana use amongst teens. The study surveyed over 46,000 teens across the country.

News Hit - Iowa Board Ignores Drug Czar, Recommends Medical Pot

• You may recall that back in November, the drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, happened to surface in Iowa as the state’s pharmacy board was holding hearings on medical marijuana. Gil didn’t make an official drug czar recommendation to the board, however, he made sure to try and frighten Iowans out of any potential medical marijuana policy by invoking the abject misery in which Californians have lived since legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Fortunately, Gil’s …More
