LA Voters Pass Medical Marijuana Tax

On Tuesday, voters in Los Angeles passed Measure M, which will slap a five percent business tax on the gross receipts of medical marijuana dispensaries, nearly ten times higher than the current percentage of 0.59. This means medi-pot dispensaries will be charged $50 for every $1,000 earned in gross receipts. Measure M was passed with the intent of generating up to $10 million per year to help bail cash-strapped L.A. out of its swelling budget deficit. The city of Oakland passed a …More

Medical Marijuana Advocates Eye Race for California Attorney General

While national attention is focused on the outcome of California’s Proposition 19, the race for State Attorney General – the top law enforcement officer in the state – could end up being the most important issue on the California ballot today.

As L.A. District Attorney, Republican Attorney General hopeful Steve Cooley has opposed medical marijuana by condoning raids on dispensaries, prosecuting patients and attempting to criminalize the sale of medical cannabis. It is …More

L.A. City Attorney Files Suit to Close All but 41 Medical Pot Dispensaries

Los Angeles city officials announced last week that only 41 medical marijuana dispensaries, clinics, and collectives are eligible to stay open under the city's new ordinance. Now the City Attorney has filed suit against the remaining 135 dispensaries who thought they could stay open - asking for a temporary restraining order and injunction against them to make sure they close their doors.

LA Turns to Raids to Enforce Ordinance, Shut Down Dispensaries

In the wake of the LA City Council’s ordinance banning medical marijuana dispensaries that registered with the city after its 2007 moratorium, the LAPD has adopted an aggressive stance to shut down illegal shops.

Law enforcement has assembled a team of narcotics officers to conduct raids of dispensaries that are operating illegally. To date, the LAPD has raided four medical marijuana dispensaries.

The most recent raid resulted in two arrests and officers confiscated 40 …More

L.A. Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Resist Closures

Since the new medical marijuana ordinance in Los Angeles took effect on June 7th, many dispensaries have been resisting the crackdown.

Around 90 dispensary owners have filed for injunctions against the new ordinance, saying the new law is discriminatory to dispensaries opened after the 2007 moratorium. Until the rulings come down, many dispensary operators will keep their doors open - one even becoming a gallery - in the hopes that the ordinance will be struck down.

Medical Pot Delivery Services on The Rise in California

The backlash against medical marijuana dispensaries is evident in Los Angeles and many other towns in California. Hundreds of L.A. dispensaries must close down this week or face criminal charges and many other California cities have banned medical pot shops outright. This crackdown on dispensaries has given rise to medical marijuana delivery services. After all, California patients need their medicine and while they’re being prevented from going to pot dispensaries, there is currently no …More

Marijuana Bill Could Cut Colorado Dispensaries in Half

Colorado’s booming medical marijuana scene could take a hit as Governor Bill Ritter is prepared to sign a bill into law aimed at regulating dispensaries.

On Tuesday the State House approved a bill that would implement a 1,000-foot buffer zone between dispensaries and schools (like the new L.A. City Council ordinance). Additionally, the bill requires dispensaries to be licensed – a process that would include background checks by the Colorado Department of Revenue as well as …More

Over 400 L.A. Dispensaries Ordered to Shut Down

The first phase of the LA City Council’s latest attempt to rein in the booming medical marijuana business is now underway. City prosecutors are notifying 439 dispensaries that they must close by June 7 – the day the council’s ordinance takes effect.

According to the ordinance, only dispensaries that were registered with the city prior to the 2007 moratorium can remain open. The city estimates that that leaves about 130 businesses. Those qualifying dispensaries will …More

No Referendum for Medical Marijuana Ordinance in L.A.

It seems strange but a group of advocates attempting to force a referendum on the new L.A. medical marijuana ordinance failed to collect the necessary signatures. 27,425 signatures were necessary to qualify for a ballot measure. At the deadline, advocates had collected about 15,000.

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Sue L.A. Over City Ordinance

A medical marijuana advocacy group, Americans for Safe Access, and two L.A. dispensaries are suing the city of Los Angeles over the ultra-restrictive ordinance passed by the City Council earlier this year and signed by the mayor last month. According to the suit, the city’s medical cannabis ordinance “severely restricts access to medical marijuana by effectively forcing plaintiffs, as well as the vast majority of collectives in the City, to close their …More
