The $1,000 Growroom

This story is dedicated to the memory of Todd M., a good grower and a good friend.

Allow me to first throw out a few disclaimers. Our chief concern here in the Cultivation Department, as always, is the safety and well-being of our readers and growers, as well as the families and neighbors of said growers. To grow marijuana safely is sometimes contradictory to doing it inexpensively. Cutting corners can be easier and may save time and money, but remember this: It’s …More

Light and the LED Zeppelin: Will LED’s Sink or Soar in the Growroom?

An Advanced Grow Feature by Nico Escondido

A Light Introduction
When people talk about indoor cultivation and the lamps they use to light up a growroom, some standard words and phrases come to mind. You have terms such as HPS and MH, referring to high-pressure sodium and metal halide bulbs, respectively. You have units of measurement such as wattage, lumens or lux thrown around to describe a particular lamp’s discharge or intensity. Lately, however, there have …More

Let There Be Light

Understanding light seems simple enough.

We all learn about our good friend ROY G. BIV early on in our schooling and the basic processes of a plant and photosynthesis soon follow. But understanding just how exactly these two components of science work together to form heavy, resin-soaked buds is something that has been left out of most grade school curriculums… Go figure.

It’s a real bummer too, because with just a little bit more knowledge about plants and light an average …More

JORGES RX

HPS or Metal Halide?
Bro, I love your work—keep rollin’. Which are better for me, metal halide (MH) or high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights? My growing spaces are 2’ x 3’ x 6’ and 2’ x 4’ x 6’. Should I use a 250- or a 400-watt lamp?

Please help.
EZ Greens

Dear EZ Greens,
Both grow spaces are quite small, so your biggest concern should be heat buildup and possibly humidity. Deal with heat buildup by installing a good vent fan that …More

JORGE'S RX

Oops! Wrong Light Schedule
I’m growing six indoor clones with a good set-up (proper lights, ventilation, fans and soil), but I mistakenly grew them on a 12/12-hour light pattern since the start. Now the plants are very short, with few leaves, but they are starting to show flowers and white pistils. Can I put my clones through 24 hours of light so they can return to the vegetative stage to grow bigger, then switch back to 12/12 to get good-sized buds, like I should have done from …More
