As the East Coast recovers from the damage wrought by Hurricane Irene, the Huffington Post suggests the massive storm may be responsible for some positive news. According to Huff Post, hurricane’s can “encourage growth of psychedelic mushrooms.”

In addition to high winds helping to spread spores, the moisture and humidity present during a hurricane provide an ideal growing environment for shrooms.

The summer of 2010 was an unusually rainy one for Colorado. The normal annual precipitation there is 17 or 18 inches, which works out to about 1.5 inches per month – but this past year, August took the title of wettest month on record, with nearly 3.5 inches falling. That had some Coloradoans cursing the Weather Channel, but lots of rain means lots of moisture – and lots of …More

Professional skateboarder Jereme Rogers said Wednesday he was sorry for disturbing his Redondo Beach neighbors this week when he "ate some `mushrooms' and bugged out," preaching naked on his rooftop.

Rogers, a high school dropout who attributes his skateboarding skills to God, was eventually grabbed by police officers and brought down from his precarious perch.

"It obviously was not an everyday experience," the 24-year-old …More

Brain Damage Control: Psychedelic Evolution

There I stood, a few years ago in San Francisco, with my feet spread apart and my arms outstretched against the side of a car. As I was being frisked by a police officer, I realized that he was facing the back of my Mad magazine jacket, the face of Alfred E. Neuman smiling at him and saying, “What, me worry?” And, indeed, this cop was worried. He asked if I had anything sharp in my pockets.

“Because,” he explained, “I’m gonna get very mad if I get …More

No More Magic Mushrooms for the Dutch

Source: radionetherlands.nl
A Dutch law banning the possession and sale of magic mushrooms (hallucinogenic drugs) has come into force.

The Dutch parliament called for the ban after a 17-year-old French girl who had allegedly taken magic mushrooms jumped off a building and died last year. Until now there had been no restriction on the sale of the drug, which, being a natural product, was only subject to the same regulations as fruit and vegetables.

TIEL, Netherlands (AFP) - Freddy Schaap, a grower of hallucinogenic mushrooms, is bitter about having to lay off half his staff on account of a Dutch government ban on his psychedelic produce.

From Dec 1 the famous Amsterdam magic mushroom will no longer be on sale in the city. The hallucinogenic mushrooms, imported mainly from Hawaii, Mexico and Ecuador, have for years been freely available, at modest prices, in shops around the city.

Neatly packed and labelled in display cases beside regular goods like vegetables and milk, and often packed in souvenir gift wrapping, the mushrooms have been popular among mainly German, French and British …More

Is Doctor-Prescribed LSD and 'Shrooms on the Way?

Source: alternet.org

It might sound far-fetched, but just a decade ago it seemed unlikely that the prohibited and mildly hallucinogenic drug cannabis would become a mainstream pain-killing medicine.

But it is happening: Cannabis pain-killing pills and sprays are being developed to help people with multiple sclerosis, cancer and Aids.

Now some scientists and psychotherapists think more powerful psychoactive drugs like psilocybin, found in 'magic mushrooms', could have …More

NEW YORK (AP) -- In 2002, at a Johns Hopkins University laboratory, a business consultant named Dede Osborn took a psychedelic drug as part of a research project.

She felt like she was taking off. She saw colors. Then it felt like her heart was ripping open.

But she called the experience joyful as well as painful, and says that it has helped her to this day.

"I feel more centered in who I am and what I'm doing," said Osborn …More
