The Battle Over Body Scanners

To scan or not to scan? That is the question. On March 10, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) presented oral arguments before the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D.C., telling the three-judge panel that full-body scanners used by airport security violate the civil rights of passengers in what amounts to an “unreasonable search.”

EPIC’s intent is no less than transforming the utilization of full-body scanning by the Transportation Security …More

Bill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet

Source: news.cnet.com

Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

They're not much happier about a revised version that aides to Sen. Jay Rockefeller, a West Virginia Democrat, have spent months drafting behind closed doors. CNET News has obtained a copy of the 55-page draft of S.773 (excerpt), which still appears to permit the …More

US Supreme Court Says Passenger Can Be Frisked

Source: boston.com

WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court ruled Monday that police officers have leeway to frisk a passenger in a car stopped for a traffic violation even if nothing indicates the passenger has committed a crime or is about to do so.

The court on Monday unanimously overruled an Arizona appeals court that threw out evidence found during such an encounter.

The case involved a 2002 pat-down search of an Eloy, Ariz., man by an Oro Valley police officer, who …More

Internet Censorship: Australia Says No

Source: geek.viewfromwithin.net

A nationwide protest rally against the internet censorship filter proposed by the Australian Labor Government was held today. Over 9,000 people were slated to attend nationwide. I was fortunate enough to go to the rally on the steps of Parliament House in Adelaide, South Australia. I heard speeches from the Digital Liberty Coalition, the Green Left Weekly, and other concerned members of the public.

People NEED to pay attention and protest this …More

Pub-goers to be Tested for Drugs

Source: news.bbc.co.uk

Officers in the force will be the first in Scotland to use an Itemiser - a device which can detect traces of drugs from hand swabs in a matter of seconds.

The test is voluntary, but customers will be refused entry if they do not take part. They could be searched and even arrested if traces are found.

The device was trialled by the police force in the area earlier this year.

UK Appeals Court Rejects Encryption Key Disclosure Defense

Source: linuxworld.com.au

Defendants can't deny police an encryption key because of fears the data it unlocks will incriminate them, a British appeals court has ruled.

The case marked an interesting challenge to the UK's Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), which in part compels someone served under the act to divulge an encryption key used to scramble data on a PC's hard drive.

Failure to do so could mean a two-year prison sentence or up to five years if …More

Harvest Time: Some Growers Have Eyes To The Sky

Source: northcountrygazette.org

It’s harvest time and some “farmers” are nervously watching the skies, listening for the hovering of a helicopter.

Some growers plant their crops in their gardens, trying to masquerade it among the corn. Others plant on state land or someone else’s land that they have access to, denying ownership if their crop is raided.

Helicopter pilots find marijuana plants growing in people’s backyards, in gardens, in …More

Widespread Cell Phone Location Snooping by NSA?

Source: news.cnet.com

If you thought that the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping was limited to AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, think again.

While these household names of the telecom industry almost certainly helped the government to illegally snoop on their customers, statements by a number of legal experts suggest that collaboration with the NSA may run far deeper into the wireless phone industry.
