Review: Archers of Loaf in New York City

By Mike Hughes

After reuniting for a single show in Carrboro, NC in early 2011, Archers of Loaf kicked off a full-scale reunion tour that summer. The band unofficially broke up back in 1998, so faithful Loaf fans were overjoyed to have the band back and touring in support of Merge Records remastering and reissuing their four studio albums.

Certain Archers fans were unable to attend any of the 2011 reunion tour shows due …More

Review: Los Angeles Times Festival of Books

By Paul Krassner

There were more than four hundred authors at the annual Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. The participants ranged from Rodney King (whose video taped severe beating twenty years ago by sadistic police officers resulted in a riot that caused over 50 deaths and devastating destruction) to Judy Blume (her books for children and adults have sold more than 80 million copies) to T.C. Boyle (the author of more than twenty …More

Lost in Austin: SXSW 2012

By Mitch Myers

To quote some old friends, “What a long strange trip it’s been.” The 2012 edition of SXSW was bigger and more badass than ever, and that was a good thing – except for when it wasn’t.

You see, SXSW is no longer a fascinating industry attraction as it has more or less become a bizarre spring break destination. Interestingly, the recurring question in Austin was whether the amazing technology boom was going to continue to …More

Jam in the Dam – Night One

After a few days of exploring Amsterdam, too many coffee shops and a couple museums... we were finally treated to the music we traveled across the ocean for: five US jam bands, each taking one of two stages to rock the Melkweg for three consecutive nights as part of Jam in the Dam.

And jam they did. Lotus opened the festival on the Max Hall stage in the big room as fans filtered in and greeted one another with high-fives, hugs, and kisses on both cheeks. Electronica and deep bass waves …More

Review: Snowball Music Festival

By Ash D

After wandering around the Snowball Music Festival in Avon, Colorado March 2-4 one thing became incredibly clear; this music festival is a marathon, not a sprint.

With big name headliners like Snoop Dogg, Bassnectar, BoomBox and TV On The Radio, concertgoers flocked to the snowy Rocky Mountains surrounding Beaver Creek Ski Resort for what promised to be a very full weekend.

Outdoor concerts in the winter always seem to go one of two ways – either …More

Portugal. The Man @ Brooklyn Bowl 1.20.12

Last night, headlining The NYC Freaks Ball (Night 1) at Brooklyn Bowl, the five-piece rock act, called Portugal. The Man, enveloped the stage in their own punctuation-challenged but aesthetically gifted way. And the first thing one is struck by: man, that’s a nice guitar. What can I say? John Gourley swings a pretty fiddle and knows how to use it.

Producing six records in as many years, Portugal. The Man …More

Ziggy Marley Talks Hemp, Comics and Woody Harrelson with HIGH TIMES

By Mary Ought Six

On October 21, Ziggy Marley brought his good vibe having, Grammy Award-winning, reggae ensemble to the Best Buy theater in NYC. I came for the early door and the mood was already set to relaxation and positivity. Fans chilled on couches, stairs, at the bars tucked into each of the venue’s nooks and crannies, and gathered around the stage for good positioning.

Review: Jane’s Addiction – The Great Escape Artist

Jane’s Addiction just might be the most popular band with the fewest number of albums released, as The Great Escape Artist (Capitol) is the first LP from Jane’s in eight years and only their fourth studio effort since their inception over 26 years ago. In career context, Great Escape Artist is better than 2003’s uneven and sometimes sterile Strays though it still does not compare to the two classic JA albums, 1988’s Nothing’s …More

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2011

At one point, a stage emcee declared: “Hardly Strictly Bluegrass (HSBG) is the greatest free music festival in the world,” and judging by the reaction of a large throng of the estimated one million in attendance over the course of the three-day weekend event held annually at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and from the diverse lineup of artists assembled, it was hard to disagree.

On the first day of HSBG, Friday September 30, Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore …More
