Lost in Austin: SXSW 2012

By Mitch Myers

To quote some old friends, “What a long strange trip it’s been.” The 2012 edition of SXSW was bigger and more badass than ever, and that was a good thing – except for when it wasn’t.

You see, SXSW is no longer a fascinating industry attraction as it has more or less become a bizarre spring break destination. Interestingly, the recurring question in Austin was whether the amazing technology boom was going to continue to …More

Festival Review: SXSW 2011

By Mitch Myers

It’s hard to believe that SXSW was actually celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year – but there was a documentary about SXSW at SXSW entitled Outside Industry: SXSW, and they said it’s been twenty-five years so you know that it has to be true. Over this past quarter century SXSW has grown exponentially, adding impressive film and interactive components on top of their original music conference. So now, it’s …More

SxSW 2011: Day One Down

Let's just call them the dirty dozen... the first 12 bands I saw at this year's South by Southwest, that is.
And then there's the inevitable Brooklyn Vegan showcase to see. Naturally, I gravitated towards the dark indoor stage where a string of …More

SXSW Music, Film and Interactive Festivals

Things get a little more complicated every year. On Monday morning following the ten-day extravaganza known as SXSW, people leaving town through the Austin airport were backed up in long lines for security screenings that went clear outdoors. That’s because people have finally figured out that sticking around for Sunday night’s festivities is a far better option than leaving earlier. With that said, the increased synergy of combined music, film and interactive festivals make the …More
