President Johnson

By Bobby Black

Former New Mexico governor turned marijuana advocate Gary Johnson speaks to HIGH TIMES.

It’s safe to say that the vast majority of politicians don’t support the legalization of marijuana; it’s an even safer bet that most Republicans eyeing their party’s nomination in 2012 wouldn’t be caught dead at a pot rally, let alone at the offices of HIGH TIMES. Then again, Gary Johnson is not most …More

The IRS Attacks Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

Before we all partake of the high holiday of 4/20, there is another annual event that isn’t so joyous to stoners – or anyone else for that matter – Tax Day. Sure it’s extended three days this year until April 18, but it’s coming just the same. But at least when you pay your taxes, you expect the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to play fair. However, when it comes to the federal government’s war on medical marijuana, the IRS’s latest tactic could …More

LA Voters Pass Medical Marijuana Tax

On Tuesday, voters in Los Angeles passed Measure M, which will slap a five percent business tax on the gross receipts of medical marijuana dispensaries, nearly ten times higher than the current percentage of 0.59. This means medi-pot dispensaries will be charged $50 for every $1,000 earned in gross receipts. Measure M was passed with the intent of generating up to $10 million per year to help bail cash-strapped L.A. out of its swelling budget deficit. The city of Oakland passed a …More

The Cannabis Column

Creating Legalization - What Rules and Why?

The next phase of America's long running debate over marijuana's legalization involves rules and regulations. Under what terms and conditions should one be free from the threat of arrest, sanction, and possible imprisonment for growing, selling, and/or using marijuana?

For several decades the debate only concerned that last matter – what is an appropriate penalty for marijuana possession? Usually the question was framed …More

Like It Or Not, Pot Taxes Are Coming to California

By Paul Armentano

In the months leading up to California’s vote on Proposition 19, several fringe activists – most notably the so-called ‘Stoners Against the Prop. 19 Tax Cannabis Initiative’ – argued against the measure, saying that it empowered local governments to impose new taxes on marijuana production and sales. Despite this outcry from certain members of the cannabis community, voters in nine California cities, including several of the …More

Stoner Voter Guide 2010

This Tuesday, November 2nd, marijuana is on the ballot in four states, with voter initiatives in Arizona, South Dakota and Oregon seeking to create or expand safe access to medical marijuana, while citizens in California decided the fate of Prop 19, designed to legalize possession and use of cannabis for all adults over 21.
Election Day Ads: Snoop Dogg Gets Behind Prop 19

With Election Day fast approaching, a final push to persuade undecided voters is underway. Ads are springing up urging residents to get out and vote, particularly in California where Proposition 19 – a bill that would legalize pot possession among adults – hangs in the balance. Recent polling showed 44% of voters favor the measure.

Colorado Springs Gets Boost from Medical Pot Tax Dollars

The city of Colorado Springs, Colorado is pulling in about $50,000 a month in tax revenue from medical cannabis according to The Gazette of Colorado Springs. The money has helped the city pay for things like grass mowing and they may soon be able to resume Saturday bus service.
