The HIGH TIMES Interview with Elijah Wood

By Dan Skye

When The War was released in 1994, Elijah Wood’s performance led film critic Roger Ebert to praise him as “the most talented actor in his age group, in Hollywood history.” Indeed, Wood has been a Hollywood standout since he first appeared in the Paula Abdul music video “Forever Your Girl” at the age of eight. A generation of kids grew up on his early films, including Radio Flyer, Forever Young, The Good Son …More

Cheech & Chong Guest Star on The Simpsons

Groundbreaking cannabis comedy duo Cheech & Chong made a long overdue animated appearance on The Simpsons this past Sunday, in an episode entitled “A Midsummer’s Nice Dream,” a Shakespearian nod to the pair’s 1981 film Nice Dreams. Though The Simpsons are long past their glory days, this episode was funnier than the usual offerings from the series of late – once again, pot humor saves the day!

Pot Programming

Watch TV lately? Then you’re aware that programs and commercials are making covert – as well as overt – references to pot and stoner culture. But a double standard is well entrenched: Pot and its psychoactive effects are commonly used to enhance plot lines and sell products, yet pot is routinely demonized on network news and in so-called public-service announcements (PSAs) as a dangerous drug with no medicinal value.

For example, every Fox animated series …More

The 2009 HIGH TIMES Stony Awards

By Steven Hager and Natasha Lewin

Though a blizzard of great pot films was released in 2008, the following year, unfortunately, witnessed a major downturn in the genre. As a result, the biggest breakthrough moment for cannabis in the popular media in 2009 occurred not in theaters, but on television, as Seth MacFarlane stunned viewers with a wildly pro-pot episode of his hit show Family Guy. In 2009, Family Guy was even nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding …More

TV REVIEW: The Whitest Kids U’ Know – Season Two on IFC

The press release for The Whitest Kids U’ Know, a sketch comedy troupe from Brooklyn, New York, claims the group’s work is “reminiscent of comedy classics The Kids in the Hall and Monty Python.” While comparisons to such luminaries might be premature, The Whitest Kids U’ Know do have something those seminal acts did not. Namely: an uncensored environment for their work thanks to The Independent Film Channel (IFC) – the network on which their series will air …More

DVD REVIEW: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia - Seasons One and Two

By Brian Abrams

On paper the plot sounds all too familiar: father Frank (Danny DeVito), son Dennis (Glenn Howerton), and his two high school buddies Charlie (Charlie Day) and Mac (Rob McElhenney) own a bar in the City of Brotherly Love. Dennis's struggling actress sister Deandra (Kaitlin Olson) helps out in between auditions.

If you're behind on season three of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which premiered its first two episodes last week, then you'd probably dismiss the …More

DVD REVIEW: Daniel Tosh Completely Serious - Believe the Hype

The comedic device of being ‘unapologetically politically incorrect’ – which seems so fresh to those operating under the pretense of saying-what-no-one-else-has-the-courage-to-say despite only broaching topics that already enjoy a public consensus (see Carlos Mencia) or those that seek to distinguish themselves from the endless line of equally banal talent waiting in the wings by appearing quirky and off-color while offering nothing of interest beyond that (see Sarah …More
