MOVIE REVIEW: Tribeca Film Festival – New York City, April 25 - May 6

By Steve Bloom

The 6th Annual Tribeca Film Festival (TFF) in New York featured 157 films and 88 shorts from April 25 to May 6. Here are five TFF faves, in order of preference:

The Third Wave, directed by Alison Thompson
Thompson’s a HIGH TIMES favorite. After all, she directed our feature film, HIGH TIMES’ Potluck (2003). Ten days after the tsunami hit the coast of Sri Lanka on Dec. 26, 2004, Thompson flew to the devastated country with her producer …More

FESTIVAL REVIEW: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – April 27-29

By Steve Bloom

New Orleans is the kind of place where you can hear quality jazz and eat fresh oysters in the airport. It’s America’s jazz city.

New Orleans is also, due to Hurricane Katrina, America’s most depressed city. But that hasn’t stopped it from hosting the sprawling 38-year-old Jazz & Heritage Festival (a.k.a. Jazzfest). Despite abandoned houses and stores virtually everywhere (except for perhaps in the French Quarter, the tourist zone that was …More

THE ANGRY LION

By Steve Bloom

Stephen Marley, Bob Marley’s second son, is smoking a perfectly rolled spliff in his home studio in South Miami. He starts with freshly chopped herb on a cutting board, then adds a “lickle” loose tobacco and twists it up using a long Rizla paper.

“If you don’t roll it right, you get what we call a sore-foot spliff,” he laughs. Of course, he rolls it right. No loose pockets—it’s a cone that would make any Jamaican or Dutch …More

Movie Review: Factory Girl - More Fiction than Fact?

By Steve Bloom

Hollywood's latest take on Andy Warhol focuses on his temporary muse, Edie Sedgwick, who burst on the Factory scene like a comet in 1965. She's the star of George Hickenlooper's Factory Girl, in theaters now.

The movie is not without its controversies. Bob Dylan has threatened to sue for defamation of character and Lou Reed allegedly hates it. Sedgwick (played by Sienna Miller) arrives from Boston a well-to-do 22-year-old woman seeking attention, glamour and fame …More

Why the ASA Conference Was Canceled

By Steve Bloom

Just four days before the DEA raided 11 dispensaries in Los Angeles, Pickwick Gardens in Burbank rudely booted the Americans for Safe Access conference, scheduled for January 12-14. More than 200 registrants were not allowed to return on Sunday, Jan. 14, forcing ASA to hastily regroup at a nearby Mexican restaurant. The reason given for the cancellation was pot smoking on the Gardens’ grounds.

Conference attendees included Debby Goldsberry, Ed Rosenthal, Todd …More

CONCERT REVIEW - TENACIOUS D Rocks MSG

Part Tommy and part Spinal Tap, Tenacious D's ambitious stoner-rock opera The Pick of Destiny - it's currently in movie theaters and available as a soundtrack cd - came to New York's Madison Square Garden on Dec. 1.
CONCERT REVIEW: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Carry On

By Steve Bloom

Move over Michael Moore, you've got company Cindy Sheehan, make some room Bill Maher. Neil Young's coming to your town with his old buds David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, and he's got a lot on his mind. The aging rocker sounds, well, young again, protesting like did in the '60s and early '70s against the Vietnam War. Now, however, it's the Iraqi War that has him all worked up.

Young's latest album, Living With War, is a broadside against US policies …More

REVIEW: Gathering of the Vibes - In Its Eleventh Year GOTV Keeps Alive the Spirit of Seminal Music Fest, Woodstock

By Steve Bloom

Thirty-seven years ago, a little event called Woodstock happened. It took place in Bethel, about 90 miles north of New York City on the Thruway and then west on Rt. 17. I flashed on this immortal event as I drove by signs for Bethel, Woodstock and Saugerties en route to Duanesburg – the site of this past weekend’s 11th Annual Gathering of the Vibes (GOTV).

Now in its fifth year at Indian Lookout Country Club, GOTV is a seasoned event with quality …More

CONCERT REVIEW: Manu Chao & Los Amigos Invisibles Celebrate Brooklyn!

Story by Steve Bloom

From the reggae/punk of Manu Chao to the suave dance music of Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles, worldbeat was the musical flavor of choice at the Celebrate Brooklyn! summer concert series in Prospect Park this past weekend.

In a rare US performance, Manu Chao electrified the sold-out audience on Monday night. Chao, who was born in Spain and raised in Paris, alternates between Bob Marley-style reggae, flamenco-accented guitar pop and intense …More
