Take your clones right before your light goes out. It gives them a rest after such a shock. Keep them under 18 hours of light. Don't go 24 hours, they gotta rest periodically for best results.

eastend budz

Oct 8 2009, 5:58 pm

flourecent bulbs and humidity thats what they need

eastend budz

Oct 8 2009, 5:55 pm

18 to 24 hrs be fine little suckers still in shock anyway

Jon-E

Oct 8 2009, 3:10 pm

this is a cloning question: if you take cuttings from a plant on a 16/8 cycle should you:
A. put it on 24hr cycle
B. put in on a 16/8 cycle
C. put it on a 18/6 cycle
i'm not sure what is the best. if i put it 24hrs of light does it shock the the plant cuz its used to 16/8?
or is 16hrs enough light to grow roots?
i put some on 24hrs and they look like they aren't liking so much light. i also dont want to much of a dark period also. cloning is hard as fuck!!!
anyone know whats up?

Jon-E

Oct 8 2009, 11:18 am

hey bishop....try using mixed spectrums for your veg.
if you were to get some flours put one or two bloom bulb with it.(depending on how many bulbs you buy)
the red spectrum is acutally prefered to start seeds and the first week or so of seedlings. promtoes root growth. in one of my T5's i have 2 bloom and 2 grow bulbs for my veg. and the other one has all grow for my mother and clones. once the clones have rooted i put them under the one with the mixed bulbs, veg for about a week or two and striaght to the flower chamber.

jon-e~~~~~~~~~~~~thanks bro. The MH bulbs were in the lights already so they work. I think I ever sent you a pic of them. They are like shop lights almost. The plant bulbs Im using for just the seedlings and clones, nothing else. I will try to get some t-8 or t-5. thanks again

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 8 2009, 10:52 am

Yeah, home depot sells 'natural sunlight' flouros for like $7 a piece, I find they worked pretty well for seedling/veg stage. MH puts out too much heat...
JON E, when you grow medicinally, it doesn't really matter what you say on here, right?
plant the seeds of freedom and overgrow the government!

Jon-E

Oct 8 2009, 10:34 am

yo bishop.....i would use either flouresent T8 or T5's for veg.(cool white or 6500K) they dont use alot of power at all and you can leave them on 24hrs. and not really worry about anything. thats what i use and i have no problems ever. and plus you can put it 4" from the tops(faster growth).i have 2 4foot 4 bulb T5's and it pumps out 40,000 lumens and they are only 10" wide. if you do use your MH bulb make sure its a MH conversion bulb(can be used with a hps ballast) and keep it about 3 feet from the tops. that way it can be used with your HPS ballast. trust me, electrical work is a WHOLE different ballgame.
hope this helps.
P.S. dont buy any flouresent bulbs that say "plant light" or anything like that....they dont have the right spectrums.
its more for aquriums and shit like that. cool white, daylight, natural, warm white or look for 6500k when you pick some flouresent bubls.

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 7 2009, 5:47 am

Also white widowmaker, be sure to leave the fan leaves because these are the leaves that take in the light. Be sure to use clean, sharp scissors or a razor blade for clean cuts.

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 7 2009, 5:38 am

WHITE WIDOWMAKER: The best branches to prune are the lower third of your plant. You can use these to clone for your next batch if they have 2-3 sets of leaves on the trimming. Trimming the lower branches will promote good airflow beneath the canopy and help to prevent pest and disease problems in your medium. Since these branches will be under the canopy and recieve minimal light, these branches will be better used for cloning since they will not grow any worthwhile buds.

Pruning Question:

I am into my third week of vegetative growth and am going to try pruning my plants for the first time. I am wanting to know which branches I should prune. I have A)big fan leaves that protrude from the stalk with no side branches and B) branches that shoot off from the stalk but also have side branching and possible bud sites. My question: is it better to trim the "node-containing" branches or the "no nodes" branches? Hope this makes sense and hope someone can help. Thanks

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 6 2009, 11:09 am

yeah bishop I know, but I prefer to stick to the electronic ballast, it makes zero noise and releases almost no heat which I need for an apartment setup. All I need to get is a new piece to screw the bulb in to. And you probably won't get any info on that site, I was just recommending it as another good mag to read after you've read high times 30 times through! lol...well, time for some wake n bake

BC--- I have those lights. They take a mh or hps bulb. Have built in ballast.

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 6 2009, 1:09 am

Grassmaster, I read in my manual that this ballast can power MH or HPS so I figure I probably just need to buy another kit minus the ballast. Where do you prefer seeds from?

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 6 2009, 1:06 am

eastend, open the jar and leave it open until the outside of the nugs start to just feel crisp again, then close it until they feel soft. I do this for a month or so and the bud tastes sweeter than sugar..

Oct 5 2009, 11:40 pm

As a matter of fact, my experience is very limited when it comes to electronic ballasts, BC. I am not going to invest in digital ballasts until the makers of the bulbs I use make digitally compatible bulbs. Right now there is only one bulb company that I know of that does.

sknkbry

Oct 5 2009, 10:36 pm

just get a conversion bulb found at any local grow shop or online

Grassmaster

Oct 5 2009, 8:14 pm

BC OrganicMechanic: I just noticed you said "electronic" ballast. In that case, I do not know how to change them.

Grassmaster

Oct 5 2009, 8:12 pm

BC OrganicMechanic: First, I have been using molassas for 21 years. It WILL swell your buds and give them an organic tasting sweetness. The method that has worked the best for me, is to use 1-2 tablespoons per gallon (increase from 1 to 2 the further into flowering you go) for your last 2 weeks for indicas, last 3 weeks for indica/sativa mixes and the last 4 weeks for sativas that flower for 11 weeks or longer.

Second, I do know how to switch a HSP to a MH, but i do not want to explain this to you as you stated "you are by far not an electrician." This task that you want to attempt is VERY dangerous if you make a mistake. I could not live with myself if you burned your house down. If you must, the internet is very resourceful, but I would not recommend it. Spare yourself the danger, and just purchase the right ballast, please.

I have seen people make mistakes with switching the ballast over, and their houses (in both cases) burned down.

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 5 2009, 6:51 pm

GRASS: Im the farthest thing from an electrician. The light kit I bought is a 400W HPS bulb with a 400W/120V Lumatek electronic ballast. What would I need to convert that for a 400W MH?

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 5 2009, 6:48 pm

Grass: yeah man gettin VERY anxious. Already seeing nice, rich copper hairs mixed in but I'm just waiting for my flush cycle to be done. Nothing is worse than the taste of nutrients so I dont wanna skip on it. The trichromes are just burstin out allover...I was reading about using a molasses solution in pure water for the entire cycle, you ever hear of or try that? Heard it makes for extra sweet buds...

Grassmaster

Oct 5 2009, 6:10 pm

Oct 3 2009, 11:15 am

the pic with the fluorescent bulbs is in a 5x5x7 grow tent, the tent works pretty good. Over heats sometimes but is manageable with an intake and exhaust fan. My tent in the summer gets hot enough to affect my nutrient solution. Which is a problem. I'm looking into investing in some LED's for the energy saving possibility and the minimal heat they are suppose to produce. The pic is of hydroponically grown White Widow 3 weeks into the flower stage.

i use a grow tent to keep my mother and clones in. i like it for the simple fact that they are easy to take down, and they stay somewhat warm which is good for veg. if you run hydro in it, it gets a little humid so watch for that. i have another room for flower.

I still have my largest cola from last harvest and I put it up next to these buds and these were 4 times the size of the last harvest. I will post final weigh in after harvest if you like.

eastend budz: If you are looking for a self-contained unit that will fit in a small closet, look the phototron. I have used one many years ago and it worked well. There are many other routes that you could take in a small closet like you describe, but the keyword in your request was "self-contained", which is why I suggested the photo-tron. It only uses on average, $4 per month in electricity. (base model/before upgrades)

http://www.phototron.com/

I've said it before and it is worth repeating, get Jorge Cervantes growers bible, it's worth it's weight in buds. Oh yea, a subscription to HT is also worth it's weight in buds.
