?????????~~~~you really need to have cfl's or something of a lower power but if you have to use 400w keep as far away as possible.
Walmart sells T-8 or T-5's buy that with a cool white lighting, natural light. Its like a 2700k bulb.
You will be able to use that all the way through veg stage. I
mounted mine on the sides once I started to flower. Used 400w hps for middle, or center of girls, cfl's on the sides.
Hope that helped......

I also want to comment concerning adds High Times post. I feel like just anyone shouldn't be able to advertise."We" tend to believe in these company's, only to have a bad experience. Maybe some sort of screening, or holding these company's accountable?? It is my personal opinion that you do an excellent job and I love the stories, articles, and everything else about High Times.

newb-only use one drop of super thrive per gallon of water and do not use rockwool!get a 2 inch plastic basket with a neoprine insert(hydro or plant store).make sure the stems are in the water and you have some sort of humidity dome over them and you should have roots with no wilting of the babies in a week.100% survival rate!!

Most of what people call shwag or mid-grade weed is like that because it wasn't dried and cured properly,it's commercial smoke and rushed to the streets for profit.

When I was in school we did this expirament where we put used coffee grounds around some plants and left some without the grounds. The plants that we put the grounds around grew much faster and fuller than the ones without. I was wondering if the same results might be obtained with marijuana.

Mar 6 2010, 5:27 pm

I just wanted some input. I stuck an LED light in a closet and put 5 pots filled with some generic soil and tossed in a handful of mid-grade and shwag seeds and now I have three beautiful plants. I haven't been tracking how long it has taken as it was pretty much just a ditch effort after a very disappointing first try. The part that I'm so happy about is that the buds are finally getting big enough to appreciate without having to squint, though when I do take a close look I can see little glitters of a what I hope is the beginning of THC crystals. Is it possible to get good bud from such lax efforts or should I refrain from getting my hopes up?

Irish-If you see little bugs flying around your plants, they are probably white flys. The adults are immune to almost all the commercial insecticides except Fruit and Berry which will not kill the eggs or larva. It is the larval stage of this insect that does the most damage. They suck out enzymes, and can kill your plants if they go unchecked. You'll have to spray every four days for about two weeks to be sure that you have killed all the adults before they have had a chance to lay eggs. The same product and spray program works for spider mites too.
An organic method of bug control is using soap suds.Put Ivory flakes in some lukewarm water and work up the suds into a lather. Then put the suds over the plant. The obvious disadvantage is if you don't rinse the soap off the plant you'll taste the soap when you smoke the buds.
Hope this was a help and thanks again to all the people who give advice.
See ya soon,

BISHOP
-humidity levels are optimal between 40%-50% if its too low plants will be dryer in leaf moisture and will attract a little more pests outside, and if its too high it will slow growth on plants and produce powderey mold.

I've been doing some research myself about that same subject and you're doing it right. Keep setting your babies out a couple hours a day, increasing the amount of time you leave them out in the sun as you go,and they should do just fine. As long as they get more than 12 hours of sunlight a day they'll stay vegative and not flower. You seem to have done your own homework, great job!

Feb 20 2010, 4:30 pm

hey i'm a second year outdoor grower. this year i decided i wanted to start plants inside so that i could plant bigger plants in spring. i set up an indoor room with compact florescents and have a good colection of seeds and clones all started and rooting well. I have since heard from a friend that taking an indoor crop and putting them outdoors can make them start to flower. This will screw my plan of growing huge plants if they start to flower once i plant them. Does anyone know if this is true? If i slowly transition them to real sunlight a few more hours per day for a couple weeks and they dont get longer then 12 hours of darkness they should continue to veg until they reach the natural 12/12 outdoors right? help plz.

Feb 17 2010, 11:51 am

straightdrop-do not whip your plants thats false! but if you want a great tasting harvest here are a couple nice tricks! first start flushing your plants when they are 40% red hairs with pure water no feeeding!! second when you have two days left kill all the lights and add super cold water or ice to the plants water cycle! this will send all the sugar (thc) to the buds!! make sure you dry for a week and cure in a glass jar for a week!! this is how you get that super dank taste!

Straightdrop

Feb 16 2010, 12:15 pm

I have a question...I'm not gonna do it but I'm just wondering if it's true. A friend of mine once told me that if you whip your plant with a switch a day before you harvest that it will send more thc and other nutriants to the buds(basicly trying to heal itself)which in turn will make the end product better. It sound reasonable but my plants are beautiful and I could never whip them, they are such good girls. LOL

Straightdrop

Feb 16 2010, 11:57 am

Sounds like you're doing a great job. When those white pistals start getting to be about half red or brown then it's ready to harvest. I'm about at the same stage you are with my queens. Give them time,be patient and let nature take it's course. Most first time growers want to smoke now and harvist way too soon,it's a common thing to mess up a plant just because you don't want to wait, and don't go showing your plants off to your friends because for some reason when they see them they become theirs too(at least in there heads). Have fun watching your babies I know I am.

Hey Irish,I'm a first time grower too but I might be able to help you out. Your plants don't like soggy feet so I usually water mine about every two or three days. A rule of thumb...stick your finger in the dirt,no not your whole finger, just enough to see if your dirt is moist. if it feels dry to you then it's time to water,if it's moist then don't. I feed and water my plants at the same time using guetto guanno(egg shell in water, letting it sit for about a week before using)my babies love it. Hope I was helpful!

My plants are about six weeks old. At about four weeks I changed the lighting from 24/24 to 12/12 and just started flowering. Had five plants all together in a common eight inch house pot.I had two males which I cut, dried and smoked. I used a single common house bulb, energy saver so it wouldn't get too hot on my plants.I kept moving the light up as they grew. I kept them under a table covered with thick cloth so no one could see the light and to let no light in during the dark hours. I used egg shells standind in water to feed and water them their whole growth and am still feeding them with that. I'm just sitting here watching my girls flower waiting for them to do that half brown thing. It's just that simple and I'm a first time grower.

smokee:check out youtube for cloning techniques. You can read and read and read about it but nothing teaches you quite like watching it done and there is a few good MJ cloning vids on there...
growing in the dark: most strains are 56 days (8 weeks) of flowering...since theyre all different and I like to grow a few strains at a time, I can't keep track sometimes so I wait till the pistils change colour. They will all be white for the duration of the flowering cycle while you're feeding her nutrients every second watering, etc...once you first see red/orange pistils, cut off the nutrients, give each plant a good flush (3gal of water per 1gal pot) and then just feed straight water until about 1/3 of the pistils have turned orange and the resin heads have started to turn cloudy instead of clear...leave them any longer and you'll get less of an uplifting high and more of a couchlock high...
Jones: did you give at least one and a half to two weeks of straight water before harvest? If your plants are stinking like lawn clippings, then you might have fed them nutes too long without sufficient flushing...
stevexr: I've never tried hydro but have inquired many times as to the best way for a beginner and I was always told flood & drain, or NFT (nutrient film technique)...these are also the cheapest way. With flood and drain, most of your supplies to construct the system are inexpensive, except for the pump (which you will need a good one because any system failure in hydro means dead plants without immediate backup power)..NFT just requires a cheaper pump, and the rockwool cubes are just set atop channels of continuous nutrient flow on a slight incline..

Dankafied: if youre using hydroponic solution in soil medium then you have to make sure youre not using too strong of a solution as it will not drain away as fast as in hydroponics. That means your roots are better to 'soak' in a weaker solution...maybe get a TDS meter to make sure your solution isn't too strong

Haas420: Thats a pretty ballsy endeavour I would say. Theres many ways you can so it without anyone knowing but what kind of budget do u have? For it to be discreet, you would have to buy the most expensive (and most costly) inline fans with carbon filters to try cover the smell...regular house lights will not work, you need either high-output compact fluoros (which are also the cheapest although youll need alot more of them), metal halide/high pressure sodium (which kick out a shitload of heat and use alot more energy, ie blowing your cover on the power bill) or LED (which are a fortune to purchase although they use minimal electricity and give off hardly any heat)..then you have to consider a grow cabinet or tent that doesnt stand out (also can be pricey to buy unless youre a tool whiz and can build your own)....where do you live? Because going out in the boonies and doing a little guerilla gardening (discreetly growing on public land) would probably be your best bet. Mother nature built the best light after all, and you wouldnt blow your cover on heating bills, odors, fans, etc...
Jones: Any local gardening stores in your area? Im lucky where I am because there is 3 places within 20 mins of me that can sell EVERY supply I need for growing my stanky, green 'tomatoes'...and anytime you go in one of these shops, you say its for tomatoes and you can put that paranoia in the back pocket..growing tomatoes follows almost ALL of the same principles as growing the hot diggity so it makes for a great cover...
CHIEF420: The best thing I can think of is cutting off their light source. Ever see mushrooms growing in a lawn? When they get outgrown by the grass and lose a light source, they die off naturally. You will always see mushrooms as more of a problem on a shorter, well-manicured lawn...
so here's what I would try...find a naturally safe hydrogen peroxide that is safe for plants...give your soil a good spray and work around the top few inches of soil (mushroom spores form a 'web' of fungi that connect to form mushrooms)...work it around good then put white 'light-tight' plastic over your pots. Dont let ANY light get into that soil and if they can't get any light since they are a fungi like algae, they will die off...this goes the same in rockwool cubes to prevent root rot and mold. Keep it covered and you should see those shrooms die off, hopefully..Also, I have never grown with LED. Ive asked a couple professional growers about it and they have all told me that the technology hasnt caught up to the hype quite yet and that the cost of an LED is astronomical compared to MH/HPS...I use MH and HPS and I couldnt be happier with the results...You might be able to change your pot and soil but youll mess up your root ball pretty good, leading to major shok and stress to your plant...what stage is it in? Can you veg it for a bit and take clones for clean soil? I can only imagine your plants already stressed to begin with, and trying to change the soil and pot would REALLLLLy stress it out. PLants are like people and dont deal well with stress...

CHIEF420: Youll learn so much in your first attempt. Im only a third time grower and from what I grew the first time to what Im about to harvest now, Ive come a long way.
I started with just 4 3ft 'natural sunshine' bulbs, some plain soil, and chemical nutrients from home depot. I now use those bulbs for my seedlings, a 400W metal halide bulb for my veg stage, and a 400W high pressure sodium for flowering (although I think Im gonna upgrade to a couple 600W HPS cause Im kinda of limited in how many plants I can grow with just a single 400W).
I used the chemical nutes with shitty results and not the greatest taste, then I tried botanicare ProBlend the second time, with mixed results. Good taste but it jacks the pH too high and that kinda fried my plants a bit. THe one VEG fertilizer I cant recommend enough is Wegener's Organic. This shit is like steroids for your plants! And all natural, and it has all the vital nutes your plants needs. Trust me, this stuff is amazing!
For flowering I now use Green Planet Wholesale (copy and paste this http://www.mygreenplanet.com/files/u1/ultimate_feeding_program_hy.gif)
That link will give you the exact feeding schedule you will need, but dont buy everything they have on the list. It will give you a simple feeding program and a pro one. For example, I sub in Wegeners for their veg formula, but then I use the Aussie, Massive, Karbo-boost to help the buds get thick and juicy, and then XXXTreme uptake to help your plants to be more pest/mold resistant, and ProCal to avoid any calcium deficiency. I know it sounds confusing, but get that chart and everything you need to know is on there (desired pH, lights on and off temps, humidity)...have a look

ramaconda: Ive never worked with and only spoken with a pro about hydroponics and the only thing I could think of from my limited knowledge is your reservoir: is it light-tight to avoid algae growth? Things like this are why I feel quite comfortable growing in plain, old soil the way mother nature intended...alot more room for error and more time to catch and correct your mistakes...
CHIEF420: What kind of lights are your plants growing under? If your lower leaves aren't getting much light then it's normal for them to brown and die. Just as long as not ALL of the leaves are turning brown, it should be alright...try reflectors lower down to get as much bang for your buck with your lighting system...

Growing your own gives you control over the product and more importantly what is used on it in the growing process. Very few growers practice true organic principles and for something you are either ingesting or putting directly into your lungs shouldn't purity of product be tops on your list. Organja.org

Flavor Blazor: Maybe I can help....Total organic soil is fine and what you want to use. Anything that doesn't have shit added unless its all organic.I went to wal-mart and bought bone meal, tomatoe feed all organig time release food, perlite, and root hormone. I measured soil-pot so that I knew how much soil for 10 pots. Looking at the back of those bags it has scale for how much to add per a 3gal. pot. I used 1/3 of what it calls for per a pot. mixed it all in my kids swimming pool since its winter. filled my buckets halfway with that dirt. The rest of the way with pure organic soil.

Hope that helped.........

Jan 7 2010, 1:52 am

Jones: clone before flowering. Just make sure you mark your clones to correspond with whatever plant you took them from so if the mother plant turns out to be a father plant, you can toss them while theyre small, or if some plants turn out to be more potent than others, you know which ones are which. Good soil mix to use is HP Sunshine Mix #4 and perlite. I suggest half and half if you can be there to check and water daily if needed. If not, use less perlite...the less perlite, the more water retention. Use flouros for seedling/clones, metal halide for vegging, and high pressure sodium for flowering..
Flavor blazer: read above. If you dont know what sunshine mix #4 is, neither do I. I just went to a garden supply store. Tell them youre growing tomatoes, works everytime. And if theyre 'cool', theyll know what ya mean and probably give ya alot of helpful hints and pointers..
growing in the dark: if theyre brown, theyre probably done for. What kind of clone gel or powder did you use? Ive only cloned once and I found keeping those puppies warm and moist is the key. I hope I dont need to ask, but did you use a humidity dome and open it once a day to replenish oxygen? Hope some of this helps...
2high2die: put a net across that will not only support the cola, but it will 'pull' back and fight the plant from shooting straight at that light..where do u live? I know alot of companys are sketchy about sending to the US but with Obamas vows of removing federal involvement in marijuana busts, chances of them busting down your door are pretty slim. I ordered from bcseeds.com and the Big Bud seeds I got are outta this world! Big fat colas and the sweetest skunk smell that makes my mouth water...so try ordering just a few seeds from wherever...most companies are very good about shipping in discreet packaging. Ive never been let down, besides gettin bunk seeds once...
hope some of this helps with the buds, buds...

BC OrganicMechanic just wanted to thank u 4 taking the time to help me out. Itz greatly appreciated. What advice could u give me in choosing the right soil to use. Jan 2 2010, 11:06 am

My question is about cloning when do you take cuttings? Can you start flowering before you take them or should you take them before? What type of light would be preferrable ( I have flourecents I use a mix of daylight and plant bulbs but plants grow very well) and what type soil condition? Loose draining, with pearlite, a virmiculite starter? I have taken cuttings of other types of plants and had them grow fine but am having trouble with indoor!

BC OrganicMechanic

Jan 1 2010, 1:36 pm

AC20003: yes, to flower your plants, switch the light back to 12 hours on, 12 hours off. Just give it a couple weeks for the flowers to show..THe most important thing about budding is that the 12 hours of dark are COMPLETE dark. No peeking, no light creeping in, NOTHING or you will produce smaller, gangly buds. Keep it dark. Thats when the buds swell up as at night...
FLavourBlazer: How well hidden do u need your closet? Mine is in a room with a sealed window and the only ventilation I have is the air that travels from that room into the rest of my place (smell is taken care of with an ONA neutralizer). If youre only growing 4 or 5 plants then ventilation shouldnt be a problem. One human just breathing gives of plenty of co2 for the plants to take in...just make sure you have osciallating fans to move the air all the time and thats all the ventilation you will need. Just DO NOT have air blowing on the plants steady, keep the fans turning....

growing inthe dark: your hydro guy must be taking the 'growing tomatoes' a bit too literal. You never wanna 'cut your plants' down to any height because thats where the growth comes from. Just let em go as high as you got room for and you can do 3 options to keep the buds from snapping off: 1) set up a trellis or net that criss-crosses from both sides of your area. The buds grow up through these and then are supported. Good for support, but then a pain in the ass for moving the plants if you need to. 2) buy 4 foot bamboo sticks and stick in em your pot and secure (loosely so plant can still grow up..). This is the method I use and its never failed me, and you can still access and move your plants around. 3) buy 'yo-yos' (retractable line) and attach it from your buds to the ceiling. This ia a pain in the ass but if you do need to save one massive bud, then any pain in the ass is worth the sweet, harvested goodness.
I put my plants in to flower at about 18" and then are now about 4 feet tall. If they were kept smaller, I wouldnt have nearly as many bud formations as I am having...hope that helps, bud

Ya, In california basically how it was explained to me, is if you have your card every county enacts their own limit on growing... and as long as you under that amount there isnt anything the police can do... So im glad to hear that... I think ill prob end up having to transplant into 2 gall containers which i dont want to do because idk if i will have the space for that size... but because those LED's are small and be close, i can move them around pretty easily maybe i can find room hahah

Sorry for the lag guys... i got scared wit all the talk about cops, so i went and talked with my lawyer just to make sure i was ok and doing everything the legal way here in california under prop 215. The lights were a little under 400$ a piece which was kinda expensive in my eyes for a light that doesnt have a "long, great" track record... but 1 of these is supposed to replace a 400 w hps.. So i grabbed 3 of emm roughly 1200 watts worth of hps. i got a lil more than a handfull of babies in 1 gallon containers they are alll fairly big for their container size right now (which worries me since im inducing flowering and expect dbl the size roughly, can i out grow my containers?). i messed up on 1 of the feedings and gave emm way to much nutrient in the vege stage, so it took almost 2-3 weeks (flush, healing time, etc) longer than i wanted for them to heal up good... but i just switched it over to flowering today ill take pics every other day or so and let you see them BC as long as i have an email to send it too... im really interested tho if the lights last a long time and really only use 90 watts... i will keep you all informed. Also this is my first true legit indoor grow so i will be asking you guys for a lil help hahah take care and becarefull guys i learned alot talking with my lawyer just make sure you fall in the guidlines of the county you live in and or become a caregiver which is not to hard to do!!! just look into it and have a decent lawyer ready and you dont have to worry... pluse make sure u have signs posted and NO WEAPONS

Ok, im liking how the soil idea is sounding!! so if i figured this right... i will have 99 plants total, rotating 8 plants out a week. The Flower room will have 64 flowering all a week apart, This cycle would be for 8 weeks. The Vege room will have 24 on vege for 3 weeks each being a week apart, along with 2 mother plants(possible 3). The Clone room will have 8 clones a week coming in. This Should equate to 99 plants on a 12 week cycle producing what i want per month. For lighting i was thinking 6000W for the flowering room, 2000W for vege room w/ mothers, and a T-5 for the clones. That soil and perlite sounds like a perfect mix! What would you say space requirements would be for a 64 plant flowering room? im thinking roughly the entire flower room (20X12) should give me enough space for 64 along with a little working room.. and the mothers along with 24 should be ok in the vege room (walk in closet)... does that all seem correct to you?

Nov 25 2009, 10:25 pm

hey, I had some questions and was wondering if you may beable to help. I have a room 20ftx12ft along with a walk in closet roughly 7ftx7ft and a bathroom. I would like to turn out an lb a week roughly. So i would need a decent regimented schedule... this was my idea.. bathroom for clones, closet for mothers, and the room for veg/flower. i was thinking of putting in a few hydroponic systems(do you think flood and drain? or top feeding?). The way i figure i would do this cycle would be... take 12 clones every week, root the clones for 7-14 days then introduce them to the hydro for their vege stage. The vege stage im looking at doing is 2-3 weeks and then put them into the flowering stage for 5-6 weeks(idk if 5-6 weeks will be long enough ive read that if u shorten the light down to 8-10 hours the last 2 weeks its possible??)... Im curious if this is a possiblity to do. im thinking with 8 - 12 plant hydro systems i may have a chance at making this work. Does this cycle sound like it can work out? Any ideas or better ways to go about this please let me know, im trying to plan this out and do this perfect. Im willing to spend alot time and money to do this the right way...

Hey BC
Couple questions. I just started using nutrients and I have noticed a couple of my plants have yellow on the tips. I am on my second feeding and started at 1/4 and then doubled it. should I flush the plants with water and then go back to the nutrients or just back down on the nutrients? I am growing in soil. How long should I grow until I start flowering? The Plants seam to be growing good but a lot of watch outs for the first time
Thanks

I have 4 plants grown under a hps 400 watt light. Two plants are white widow, and the other two are og kush. All of my plants were clones when I first started growing under the 24 hour veg stage. I let them veg for two more weeks and then transplanted them all to 3 gallon pots. I've been letting them flower under the 12 hour cycle for the past 4 weeks. They just started flowering about a week and a half ago and now all of them are about a foot high. I am a first time grower and I realized that I have been over-watering. How much longer should I flower in order to yield a decent amount with good buds? Approximately how much bigger should my plants get by the time I harvest? Anyone with some good advice on how to grow the right way next time? I've been doing a lot of research recently.

high till I die: A rule of thumb Ive heard many times is pick a pot size that will achieve just what you need. Expect your plant to grow ONE foot high for every gallon the container is (ie: 2 gallon pot=2 ft plant, 4 gallon pot=4 foot plant). One thing to remember when transplanting is that it will create some shock for your plants, so leaving it to vegetate a week or two after it is transplanted allows it to recover, Just don't use water that's not around room temp (ive heard cold water can shock the roots when transplanting). If you do want smaller plants, you're fine staying in the one gallon. My last grow I just stayed in one gallon pots and still got a decent yield per plant. Just flush your pants regularily after ever few feedings to help prevent salt and mineral buildup around the roots...

Hey i got a quick question, I have my babies in 1 gallon containers. They are roughly a foot tall. I wanted to see if i could grow a "mini" plant per say. Im heading into the Flowering stage in a week roughly. So, here is my question.. Can i get away with keeping them in a 1 gallon container or should i switch over to the 2 gallon container for this next phase? Also if i switch how bad will the shock be? Is it ok for them to be in shock right when im going into flowering? Appreciate the help!

BEN: I to use 18/6 and 24 for first 2-3 weeks while they are small is ok.
to the guy about your grow box~~~~~~~plant lights never work. I made same mistake not long ago. Buy a floro from home depot 4' T-5 with large color temp for veg and seedlings 65000k or close to that. 2500k-3500k for flower. its ok to mix 1 and 1. you need soft daylight light, cool white light something that is cool sunshine like light.Hope that helps and BC is a good man to help anyone

So i am a first time grower. I have two plants in the same five gallon bucket. The tallest is around 12 to 13 inces tall with the other at about ten inches tall. Like I said, I am very new at this. So i guess im just wondering if anyone can give me some advice. When do I start the flowering process? How much water should I be giving them? I do have an oscilating fan not blowing directly on it but I'm kinda to the point where I don't really know what I'm doing and could use some help

Hey BC I see looking through the comments you know alot? I just started my seeds 8 days ago. Day one i put my selected seeds into a glass of distilled water for 24 hours. Day two I moved them to a plate with a wet wash cloth and waited till I could see roots. On day six I planted 16 of my best seeds into peat pots with organic seedling mix and drenched em in water. I have them in about a 16inch (up and down) and 13 inch (side to side) cubby-hole in my wall just to start out until I set up a bigger area. I have a regular light bulb on them in a heating lamp. No air circulation, which I am going to fix tomorrow with a small fan. I have 3 already showing their first true leaves and 7 others just pushing through here on the 8th day already. Besides the lighting problem, which will be fixed soon, What advice or tips can you give me on growing for my very first time?

Also I have them on a 16 hour light, 8 hour dark lighting schedule because I read in the high time magazine I have, that's the best way to produce more females.

They get watered every time the light comes on, and are misted with a spray bottle ever so often when needed.

I've had my 3 girls in the flowering cycle just over 4 weeks now, and oh %&$%, it must be beginners luck because I've never seen any thing quiet like it, nor has the friend that gave me a cutting this past spring. He told me he has never even seen outdoor plants in ideal conditions that look the way mine do. right now the 1st one stands just over 5' and the other two just over 4 1/2' each colia measures between 9-10 inches with hundreds of buds all over the 3 plants, it looks as if they are covered in snow, they are BEAUTIFUL, I almost hate to cut them when there time comes, we have built quite a relationship. anyway i just wanted to share that bit of info because.... well we all know why. i have 4 6ft tall plants that i've been flowering for 2 weeks. i'm growing them in a small hydro set up(emily's garden from hydrofarm), they were veg'ed under a 400wMH lamp, and are flowering under a 400wHPS. they have been extremely healthy until about a week ago, some of the lowest foliage has started to turn yellow and then die. i think its a N deficiency, but i'm not sure. Also they have not yet started to produce any buds, there are definite female hairs growing from the nodes and no fruit. the plants are about 8 weeks old total. any advice? when will they start to bud?

I've got to tell you, reading the questions and answers on this site has been a big help to me, thanks to ALL of YOU. I, too am a first time grower, and have found a lot of useful info here. I didn't want to share (fear of being tracted) my experience, but am sooooo excited about my personal results, I decided to anyway. A friend (semi-expert) gave me a starter clone, already rooted and about 5 1/2 inched tall. I put her under a MH 100 watt light and she took off. I decided to try my hand at cloning and cut two branches off "Maria", now months later, Maria is 5 feet tall and her clones are 4 1/2. all three are under 2 MH 100 watt lights> I recently bought two more lights, but not MH, only the new energy effic. flore. at 100 watts, they work just fine. They are in a closet 40"x32". I couldn't decide if i had room for more but after dropping a 2x4 on Maria and breaking off a big branch, the decision was made for me and Im glad i did. It was a little touchy at first but the two clones i got from that accident turned out just fine. Because i live on the top floor of my place and face west(all glass) i put them out in the sun when it shines, this summer was a shiney boy oh boy. I'm also lucky because they sit on a patio-like enclosed indoor outdoor enviornment all the time, good venilation and currculation no heat build-up etc. I just started their flowering stage sept. 22nd almost 3 weeks ago. Talk about BUDS, WOW, they are everywhere, can't hardly wait, but I will. Think i have a new hobby and maybe a retirement income in the future. Just want to thank all of you again for everything, stay safe and high.

right on dangerous b. I just shipped a seed order for 20 Big BC Buds, 10 Sweet Diesel, and 10 purple sativa...I think those will be grown in an nft setup. Was thinking of getting a 4' by 4' tray, laying it on a slight slope and growing in rockwool. I have 2 100gallon/hr pumps that should move enough water to do the trick. Ive never touched hydro before but I want something that can be somewhat automated unlike soil. If I can find a tray that can fill up my whole closet, thatll be sweet but Im thinking I should get a couple grow tents to maybe contain the smell a little bit more.

Oct 5 2009, 6:44 pm

CATMAN: yeah I think you want as pure of water as possible. Spend $7 or so and get a pH test kit. I think as long as the water is within 5.5-6.5pH, it will do the trick. Of course the purer the water, the better since it will have less ppm and kind of defeat the purpose of flushing your roots of nutrient build-up. I get natural mountain spring water where I live, but have you thought of collecting rainwater?
DANGEROUS B: is your nutrient/water reservoir light-tight? Meaning, when closed, can light be seen through the reservoir? If so, then the light is causing algae to buildup in your solution which is BAD for your plants. Wrap that container in a couple rolls of duct tape, spray paint it with flat black paint, do whatever you need to make that container so the solution is DARK and algae-free. A dark rubbermaid container would do the trick. Also, go to a pet store and get an air pump and air stone to keep water (oxygen AWESOME for roots) constantly moving to discourage algae build-up.

BC OrganicMechanic

Oct 5 2009, 2:06 pm

catman: it is nearly impossible to give your plants too much light. Especially if your 1000W is on a light rail where it penetrates the canopy better by covering all different angles. Yellow spots turning to yellow leaves is usually a copper deficiency. Do you use straight water every couple waterings to flush out nutrient buildup? If the salts from the nutrients builds up then it will hinder your plants ability to uptake all of the essential food for lush, green plants. Try regulating your watering/feeding schedule to allow a bit more flushing with straight water to clean out those roots. I know there are products to add to the water that help speed this up so ask for them at your local hydro store...

Hey bud, best lights for finishing the flower cycle are high pressure sodium lamps. Depending on your space and how many plants, you'll need a 400W for a room 4-6 square feet, up to a 1000W for a 16 square foot room. HPS works best because orange/red spectrums in it simulate the fall sun.

Sep 25 2009, 1:08 am

JMURDA: Pull your plants whenever they look and smell good. Get a good scope and check out the trichomes (crystals forming allover the buds). When those start to turn from clear to 3/4's cloudy, pull 'em and dry 'em for a day or two, hanging upside down. If ya want smoother bud, let it dry till feeling crispy but the stems don't snap, then put in ziploc containers and open every day to let moisture out. When you let it slowly dry like this over the course of at least a couple weeks and let it cure well, it makes for the best smoke you'll ever blaze.

NEWBUDS: First of all, if your're growing in soil, you're not gonna want to water everyday. Spend $5 and get a moisture meter from walmart and it will keep you from overwatering. If you overwater, you 'drown' the roots of oxygen and kill your plants with too much care.
After you switch to 12 hours light/12 hours dark, you'll see buds within 2 or 3 weeks. Make sure you weed out the male plants for seedless bud. Size won't really affect how much it smells so obviously the bigger the plants, the better the bud. A 12" plant could give you nearly an ounce if you 'top' it at 2-3 weeks into veg. I grow a closet of tomatos and my garden of 18-30" plants gives me a good .75 to 1.5 oz per plant. Just get good nutrients and keep it dark when it should be dark.

GODBLESSAMERICA: Yes neem oil works well as an organic insecticide against the mealy bug, beet armyworm, aphids, the cabbage worm, thrips, whiteflies, mites, fungus gnats, beetles, moth larvae, mushroom flies, leafminers, caterpillers, locust, nematodes and the Japanese beetle. Sometimes it may take a bit for the remedy to take effect. How long into flower are your ladies? Harvesting early doesn't affect the potency, but may affect the yield of your crop. Pluck a bud or two and dry it to taste test. If it's the high you're looking for, then go ahead and harvest a bit early. I've found the earlier I harvest, the more potent the bud is.

I am tempted to harvest early as they are taller than me, big, beautiful, and OMG the smell. I only have 4 or 5 weeks max, the pistils are supposed to be 75% brown, correct? Will I lose potentcy if I harvest early? How can I get rid of those little bud destroyers?

man i ordered 10 seeds for 30 bucks 1 critical mass, 1 big bud, and 8 skunk x haze (of which only one did not sprout)i planted them on aug-31,09 and the skunk x haze plants are now on average of 10-12 inches tall with very nice side shoots and over all growth. i am using a technique that i learned from older growers in northern cali and have the branches tide down instead of "topping" them, promoting lower branch growth. i am growing all these in soil and am using the light that came with my hydro set-up from Stealth Hydro--however i took the reflector off to maximize the light. the critical mass plant is growing rapidly with very thick, rigid leaves as is big bud. both are starting to get a spicy, pungent odor to them. i also have a variety of local strains from south texas. im hoping to find out the sex of these plants by the 15th, if not i will force sex them then switch to a 12/12 lite cycle.

I ordered seeds from online and 4 days after planting them in rockwool i had 5 out of the six standing two inches tall with leaves on each. these were the lowest cost indica seeds i could find from this particular company. $45.00 for ten seeds.

To the anonymous posting that asked about ordering seeds, DONT DO IT! Find a friend with clones, youll save a ton of money on over-priced seeds, get plants that are already female, and cut weeks off of your growing time.

I have just harvested my first closet grow, with very satisfying results for a first-timer. All I started with was bagseed that I had collected over the past 4 or 5 years (40-45 seeds) and remarkebly, I had about a 75% germination rate. Since they were such a mix of strains, I was harvesting at all different times, with even an auto-flowering strain providing me smoke with in 2 months of germination. There was a number of things that I learned through this experience, ie. keeping heat down (which can be done by simply running the 12 hours of light in the middle of the night), and the odour (which was fixed with an ONA automatic which completely covered up the DELICIOUS smells). Since I do live in a third-floor apartment and grow in a 3'X4' closet, these were important factors. I used 4 36" flouros for seedling and veg, and then switch to a 400W HPS with electronic ballast (also helping reduce heat) for the floweing stage.
Here's my beef: For my second crop, I decided to try some well-known strains by ordering my seeds internationally through a certain company that rhymes with 'Shingle Marijuana Sheeds'. I ordered 10 regular aurora indica seeds, and 5 white dwarf feminized autoflowering seeds for a total cost of $125 Canadian. The seeds that they sent me could have easily been confused with black pepper seeds. They were grey, dry, NO dark stripes, and when it came to germination, completely useless. Only TWO of the auto-flower seeds even showed a root, and within 3 weeks in rockwool (kept moist and checked on several times a day) they were dead. I sent an email to this company just to ask why their 'top quality seeds' were so weak and that bagseed I had sitting in a drawer for nearly FIVE YEARS showed vigorous growth. They simply said 'Our seeds are for collection only and that I probably contaminated their seeds because they turn them every 2 weeks.' Well, so much for a company standing behind their product.
Sorry to drag on and on but I have a moral to this story. If you are trying to grow for yourself, DO NOT ORDER SEEDS. There are zero guarantees for over-priced seeds that will probably not grow at all. Thankfully, I was saved by a friend who has a larger operation and needed to move some of his smaller plants (3 weeks into flower) so I was able to restock my garden with 14 high-quality white rhino plants, and only 5 to 6 weeks from harvest. Remember people, avoid seed banks and if you do have to use seed banks, look into cloning and keeping mother plants. It will save you a fortune in the long run, and you will always have a garden stocked full of beautiful, female plants. Love you here in BC, High Times, I couldn't have done it without you. Keep the earth green, grow your own bud, buds.

hello all...i have a questions i would love answered...i have 4-600 watt hps's for my flowering room..and i am going to make the "biobucket" system"..the thing is, i dont know if i should have a lot of smaller bucket, or less buckets that can be larger...any feedback would be greatly appreciated...i realize the 600 watters dont penetrate as much as a 1000 would, but which way to go is where i am stuck..i already have the lights, and ballasts, and all that...so i have the 600's and that cant change...and im gonna have each one over a 3.5x3.5 space...please giv me feedback ppl...

1st time grower here. Growing regular seeds in plain jane soil. Have been growing for 3 months now with once a week watering, fluorescent light on for 24 hours a day and 2 fans blowing in. Is not an airtight area and the leaves all shake in the wind. Average temp is about 75 deg. and plants are only about 10- 12 inches tall. Have just started cutting lights off to induce flowering, but feel that progress is way too slow. Any hints, tips or advice would be appreciated. Not looking to make a business, just want to stop paying for it.

it sounds like you definitely got a hermie in there. The only thing you can do is keep a close eye on them and pull any with little pods on them (while buds starting too) I have one idea , which I'm doing - I have my lights on at night and off in the day to keep the temps down. Other than that you're doing good - peace out

I got a decent yield from my first indoor plant using a feminized blueberry seed. Unfortunately, after drying and curing, the potency was off and I had an inordinate amount of seeds. Is this a sign that I grew a hermaphrodite? I have 2 more in the pipeline using the same feminized seeds under the same 400w mh lamp. My heat problem keeps temps around 82 during the light on cycle of the flowering period and around 72 during the light off cycle. Humidity fluctuates between 40 and 50 percent. Everything looks good now, but I am afraid of
ending up with the same weak-seedy buds. Anybody got any ideas?

High all,

I hate to re-"hash" the past, I'm sure this subject has been beat to death. But, I'm new again, and alot has changed.

Back in 1984, just before the Rush concert started at the Leominster, MA Colliseum, I par-took of several pipes full of Lebanese Blonde Hash, What a great concert! I'm looking for that stone again, now that I have my medical card.

I have a couple of questions tho:

Why is "blonde" hash blonde? Dried and cured weed is green. Is it a certain strain or is the plant left to die out completely like they do with corn. OR...is it just the tri-chrome color after sifting.

What is the strain, do they have a modern day version of it with even a higher Tri-chrome content. Not only do I want it to taste the same but I also want it too look the same.

Why does Lebanese hash have such a spicy tone too it, Is it a filler (sandlewood, maybe) If so, what is the percentage of filler vs weed.

Does anyone know of a book or internet search where I can find the exact process.

I think I can figure out the sieve process (like bubble hash?) and the pressing part (stick it between two pieces of wood, and jack up my car, ha!)

I appreciate the help and guidance, I wish everyone the very best of health and happiness.

Anyway, bend the plant 90 degrees left and right 4 or 5 times, repeat daily for a week or so, and you should see a noticeable bulge, strengthening for them 22 footers I hope?

ok, so ive been growing indoors for about three months now, i have four plants in a nice box, with 3 led lights on top and one pointing up from the bottom for when buds start to form. i had my plants in a vegitation stage for atleast a month, transplanted them because they had grown to big for my aquarium, and then built a bigger box and put the plants in bigger pots, with better soil (bat droppings, miracle grow plant and fruit soil) and more light. i have been keeping my plants on the flowering stage for about close to two weeks now, and im trippin out cause i cant exactly tell what there gonna be (this is my first time growing btw) so what are some early signs that these plants might pe female ? they are all starting to grow three leaves at the top so i know i should be able to tell soon, all plants are atleast or almost a foot tall and one plant has tiny white hairs coming from little green tips of one of my plants??? is that good???? help !!!

In regards to animals and their ability to destroy/harm to a I know from experience that red cider vinager does great to ward off raccoons they hate it But hell maybe some of the other critters would most likely dislike the smell as well, does'nt surprise me its a very potent odor but does not linger bad especially outdoors but is very affective in my own personal experience I made a whole family of them fuckers leave my attic in one night with a simple squirt gun, advice compliments from pest control. Not sure its affects on other pests and animals but hell its worth a try maybe it will ward off more than just raccoons.

hay everyone iam a first timmer,an i always bought my weed from people an iam tired of doing that so iam growing my own.look ive been to a lot of sites telling me to buy this an that,an i think they over do it,weed is a plant an the most best pot ever grown was in the jungle.so no one helped it grow.so dont over do your plants just feed them an let them grow.make sure there warm an watered.thats all,an dont tell anyone bout your plants,no one cause weed heads are weed heads an when your crop is ready to smoke then it might not b there, thats wat happend to my freinds crop.so good luck to you who are doing this for the first time like me an just remeber not to over do it,trust me weed is a survial plant an it doesnt really need that much to grow an get you high!

Ryan you are correct. Most people veg for about a month and get the ladies to around 1 foot. Its best to wait till the plant shows its ready by showing preflowers or staggering growth

Newby, it depends on how many plants you have. That should be ok for 2 but you probably want to get a few more lights for around the base of the plant. CFLs need to be with in a few inches of the plant so keep that in mind

let me get this straight u start growing.[ i got the good stuff i need dirt nutrients etc.] now the veg stage goes for a month. Is the veg stage start soon as the plant starts to bloom or wait till it gets 3 rows of leaves? then to start flowering u go 12 on 12 off is this correct so far? im a first timer but trying to do right. then flower for 2 mos. or so then harvest ?

Growing is easy, if you just keep it low profile, and grow it in optimal conditions (w/e your space maybe), you can grow good pot. I have been growing for 8 years now, I have fucked many a crop, but I have also grown the Stick-Icky, and the most vital tip I can offer is to keep your operations secret, tell a friend or two, but don't let everyone know your buisness, you never know, I've had pot stolen, It's not very pleasant. So stay safe, keep smokin, and share the love

America has some of the dumbest laws and policies on cannabis, we all should write a letter to the president and all of congress and just cut and paste and send it twice a day everyday, from this day forward. Laws must change.

TO GROW WEED YOU NEED PATIENCE AND GOOD WARM SOIL AND LOTS OF LIGHT,THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW OTHER THAN TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR GROWS PRIVATE AND NATURAL AS POSIBLE ie:NO CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS AND DO NOT EVER SHOW ANYONE YOUR PLANTS LOCATION.,AND IF THIS IS A BUISNESS VENTURE KEEP IT FAR AWAY FROM FAMILY AND FRIENDS SO YOU CAN KEEP YOUR HOME AND PROPERTY RIGHTS IN TACT!DO NOT MAKE THE PIGS JOB ANY EASIER THAN IT ALLREADY IS.,POT SMOKERS AND GROWERS UNFORTUNATLEY HAVE THE HIGHEST ARREST CONVICTION RATES OF ANY DRUG CRIMES IN THE u.s.a.,WHY!? BECAUSE TO MANY OF US ARE OBVIOUSLY STONED OUT OF OUR MINDS AND DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS LIKE KEEPING YOUR FUCKING MOUTH SHUT!THATS ALL GO GROW SOME MONSTER PLANTS SPRING IS ALLMOST HERE AND IT IS TIME TO START THOSE BABIES IF YOU WANT A GOOD HEAD START FOR THE OUTDOORS!!!!!!
