GAMBLING ON GROWING OUTDOORS

Making It Count When the Chips Are Down.

Story & photos by David Strange

Ahhh, the things that dreams are made of. The final moments as you caress your ticket and watch the balls fall in the Super Lotto; the breeze as it flows through your hair while riding Gary Busey-style on that new motorcycle; or your own island in paradise where no one will ever build an office.

I’ve been around enough pot growers to know that dreams are also made of four-inch clones and holes full of dirt. Once the often backbreaking labor of planting is completed, those dreams morph into almost pre-emptive “fish tales” of gigantic colas and the tacky, resin-covered goodness of the years of harvests to come.

Unfortunately, those dreams can sometimes turn into nightmares. However, there are ways to wake up and rescue that dream.

When growing outdoors, the final product can be some of the most sensuous-smelling, tantalizingly tasty and smoothest-smoking herb around. But as with any grow in any environment, there is always a point of diminishing returns—the quintessential “know when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em” scenario. Sure, there may be an abundance of space to grow in that field, but you can’t just draw the curtains to hide it, and you can’t control the environment. This article shares some of the tidbits passed on to me by those who have had things go astray and still managed to beat the house.

Rain
This is usually environmental enemy numero uno come season’s end. Those buds are often big and juicy, yet they’re susceptible to mold at just about the same time as the autumn rains start to fall. If the plants are readily accessible, something as simple as shaking them to remove excess water will allow them to dry off that much more quickly and help to keep them from developing mold. Removing surrounding growth and unnecessary fan leaves improves air movement around the buds so they can dry faster, too.

While harvesting in a downpour is neither pleasurable nor suggested, sometimes the forecast calls for several days of rain, and mold becomes a concern. This is likely one of those “fold ’em” situations, and certain measures are taken by many growers to ensure their harvest doesn’t rot.

Plastic garbage bags are one of the preferred packaging products for getting that shit home, but they’re not always the best choice. Especially if it’s still hot and humid, those buds aren’t going to take kindly to being sealed up in plastic for too long. If you’re not worried about smell, something that breathes is great—but basically, just make sure not to leave wet weed in bags for more than an hour or two. It may sound harsh, but when you get your weed to the drying area, going over it with a hair dryer on the coolest setting for a few minutes will help remove some of the initial water, and it’s unlikely to make it crispy.

new jersey/ the garden state has treated me very well the last few years, though the weather has been that great all the time . I have produced a killer crop for the last three years, this year being the best not sure when to pulled but dank smelling and firm big buds. only three females but at least 1 ibs. between the three. nothing but fish carcasizes, and egg shell, plus having rich soil. but this storm we have coming has me conserned. hate to have them get slashed by mother nature. but I know if they make it throgh it could meen the diffrence between 1 ibs or 1.5ibs. because i usually wait untill oct.31 when it real shilly out ,to tighten the hair and bud. would really appreciate some quick help from a real high times pro. thanks 420 mattyg n.j.

im going to be starting a new project/study growing dank plants in the winter outdoors.
me and my good buddy last year grew a very respectable crop about 150 plants or so then they were seized by local authorities in this crop was two plants with were planted at the end of the previous grow season the morfed and only grew to be 3 inches tall but lived all through the harsh winters come spring they were very crystally and dank smelling then before we knew it they were growing like a new born plant only already dank this plant reached a height of only 18 inches or so and only produced about a quarter of an oz. so the question is does winter slow down the growth rate but induce thc? coming soon

if your going to grow outside , dont find some space out in the woods to put it so kids can smell you out and get it before you do ... you need to make a vegetable garden so you can give it the attention needed to make for a good harvest , you can grow short bushes rather than 7 foot bean stalk looking plants and you can really control the plant alot better and keep it up ... also dont use any salt compounds when growing outdoors , go fishing and get about twenty blue gill or carp or what ever and chop them up with a shovel and grow in that fish mud ....

I've got one planet I've been growing for about 8 months and It was I can say a mistake I was smoking and while cleaning the seeds threw one in a planet, well it start growing, and that was 8 months ago about 2 months ago I took the other planet( not pot ) out of the pot and left the pot planet in the planter and about a month ago I felt the planet needed to be taken out the planter and put in the ground so I did, well the plant is about 4 ft and sometimes it looks like it's dieing but other times it looks ok, well my questions are

1. when should it start to Bud ?

2. Is there anything I can do to help it stay health or tips ?

#. Is my planet a male and will never bud ?

Growing outdoors in southern Ca. First time growing; doing it just for fun. Using reggie seeds. All natural, only using perlite in the soil for drainage and retention. Started a plant in about early May, transplanted mid to late May after the third true set grew in. It's about a foot and two inches tall now from dirt to top. Planning on getting some Pyrethrum soon (organic pesticide for most bugs). I want this plant to stay relatively short, (under three feet) but to grow kinda bushy with more compact buds towards the centers of the two main stalks I have going. Anyone have any suggestion as to how and when I should trim this baby to get a result similar to that? Also, I'm pretty sure by now, that it's only a female. Another question...My plant is also producing weird numbered water leaves. In the world, there are varieties of three-leaved plants, five-leaved, seven-leaved, nine-leaved, and the occasional eleven-leaf. Most of the water leaves are three-leaved, which is fine. Others only have one, or two, this puzzles me because these one and two leaf sets continue growing without ever having more side leaves grow in. I've never seen a two-leaved water leaf before and I wanted to know if that was normal?

Got my first four beans in the dirt. 4 from a batch of euro i bought last month. Later this week i go to the other spots and plant the regular seeds. This years crop should be around 24 plants. better then last years when I planted 5 and only had 2 come harvest.
This posts tip for new growers. You know that male/hemo that you wanna keep from your ladies. Dont just kill them. recycle them. If you boil them down. you can feed that water to your ladies. where by giveing them a minor thc boost. It makes for some potent budd if you only have 2 to 3 mommas and clone your babies from them! Later all..

a good way to tell if your buds are mature enough to harvest is by examining the trichomes..when the bud is mature you will see ambor colored mushroom shaped trichomes inside of the crystals on the bud..you can see this with any 25x microscope

Oct 25 2007, 2:26 pm

if your question of good seed bad seed refers to wheather or not the seed will be male or female, there is no way to tell. Just like (despit all the BS adds) there is no way to promise a seed will be female, so dont believe the hype.

Just to put my two cents in regarding this article, dreams may indeed be made of four inch clones, but a hole filled with dirt really isn't much of a hole anymore.

jaw420

Aug 31 2007, 1:50 pm

i have seen it done...but most of the time it turns out to be a poor quality plant due to the stress that the clone was subject to.personally i would buy a few more clones and find a momma to breed out...just remember to buy good clones in the first place and you WILL find a good momma...

CRAZY FOR CLONES

Potent Father, starting indoor garden this year with profits from outdoor garden. Getting a 12 volt system with decent inverter and solar charging system so there is no spike in the light bill.Already have the room and lights ready, just need a little extra cash for my "sea of green". I think I should do okay with my outdoor strain, since I control the enviroment. Next project will be to experiment with hydroponics.Anyway should be getting next harvest by new years and have a boat load of clones for then and in the spring again to go back outside.Gotta love fall and the Harvest, keep on growin'

You can grow Herb in between tomato plants and wind it through the tomatoes by staking it to the ground every foot or so. Works good with corn too. Or,surround a bush with tomatoes or bell peppers. Hide in plain sight.

Hey potent father, sorry I haven't been on in a while.I know some of the finest growers around true "guerilla" farmers who loaned me the Ed Rosenthal book on growing and tought me thru hands on, almost an aprenticeship. This is the first year I've started seedlings to put out and am very impressed with the results, 2 more weeks to buds.Usually I set out seed beds I dig in deer season or real early spring and load with organic matter.Around the last frost I plant and wait a few weeks and transplant the seedlings. There are thousands of acres of state land to hide small stands, never put all your eggs in one basket!Water sources are unlimited up here, depending on the weather, I only go back to hit 'em with fertilizer, usually start with 20-20-20 and superthrive, until late June, then a good dose of superbloom 18-50-18 and superthrive first week of august, and let nature take its course until september and harvest. Another bonus to many small patches to one big one is one patch can be your seed patch and the rest fine sensimiella.I have been blessed with the right connections to get really awesome acclimated seeds 10 years ago and have been crossing and re-crossing to keep it going and mix it up.Glad to hear from other michigan growers! Grow the world green!

hey northern michigan this winter i started 4 plants called holland hope and had them at 12-12 + have been growing them with a 600 watt high pressure sodium light with 2 fans and no fertilizer and they shot up to about 2 foot tall and i took them and put them into the ground at about a weeek and a half in the buding stage and that was the start of june..it took them about 2 weeks to adapt and now there about 4 1/2 ft. tall with some heady ass buds taking shape...michigan weather can provide adequate climate to get good herb when you kno what your doing...now what kind of herb have you been growing and is there an e-mail i can reach you at?

Mad Scientist

Aug 4 2007, 4:28 pm

Why aren't people throwing their seeds out everywhere? I know most of you out there get a good 50-100 seeds per oz of bud. That could be 50-100 more plants growing on the side of the road, on a vacant lot, or in the flower bed at Waffle House. Don't worry so much about harvesting it, let's just get it growing everywhere again.

Northern Michigan

Aug 4 2007, 12:53 pm

Hey potent father i live in Charlevoix County Michigan and have been growing for 8 or so years indoor and out and i would say that outdoor is by far the best. Bigger tree's Bigger Buds. I think its the cool Lake Michgan water. I plant in may and right now have plants maybe 5 weeks away from harvest and ones that are still monthes away. It just has to do with the strain. I love getting seeds that are meant for indoor and then growing them from seed outside. They alway bud way early so then i get to harvest like 4 times throughout my entire gardens

Outdoors has been my choice for years. Knock on wood haven't been caught yet, some close calls and a few ripoffs.Just stay aware and plant twice as much as you think you need, unless you clone you are gonna get males, disease, drought, pot "pirates", and the fuzz.Up here in Cheboygan County, Mi we have some of the best acclimated seeds around, bred for years back into mother skunk. In the ground by mothers day and out before Sept. 15 before bird season and the hunters hit the woods.Fully mature, yummy, stoney buds.Practice, patience and discipline is the key to success.Do it by yourself, and keep it to yourself. Good Luck
