CLONING FOR PERFECTION

The road to higher yields and exceptional buds begins with successful cloning. When you start with healthy, thriving clones, you will often end up with a healthy, thriving crop come harvest time.

Story and Photos by Ed Borg

If you’re having difficulties maintaining a high level of successfully rooted clones, I suggest the inexpensive and foolproof procedure developed by Amsterdam’s Delta-9 Labs. The cloning process revealed here was achieved using rockwool cubes; however, soil, perlite or coco mediums work equally well.

Humidity, as we all know, plays a vital role in developing healthy rooted clones. If the humidity level fluctuates even by as little as 10%, it could result in cuttings failing to develop properly, which may eventually cause them to wilt, mold or die. Maintaining a rather high humidity (75–85%) for the first three days is absolutely vital to the cuttings’ success.

It is recommended (and thus assumed for the purposes of this article) that your cloning area is equipped with fluorescent lights (known in parts of Europe as TL lights). High-intensity discharge lighting (HID) is unnecessary when dealing with sensitive clones: They simply can’t handle such intense light at this young and fragile stage of existence. Fluorescents provide enough light to root clones without the dry heat typical of high-pressure sodium (HPS) or metal-halide (MH) lighting as well.

The process begins with the preparation of the medium in which you intend to clone. We use rockwool cubes for their ease and convenience; however, this is a matter of personal preference.

i found that if u let a dro plat grow in a hrydopontic kit for the first half of flowerin then transfer it to 75% poting soil and 25% merical grow it makes the plant go on a growing frenzy my whole plant turned white withe crystalz all over it.

dude just buy some super thrive from walmart and some hydrogen peroxide , ok heres what you do mix 8 drops of super thrive 1 teaspoon of peroxide 3 % and one gallon of water soak your peat pellets in the solution , clip the clones to 3 or 4 leaves stick it in the pellet put it under a cake box with a big plastic lid and put a small styrofoam cup inside with it for extra humidity , when the water evaporates it has nowhere to go but in the air , i have like 100% success the super thrive makes the plants root and the peroxide keeps parasites and the roots from rotting becuz of the h2o2 in it . good luck if u do it this way u will have 100% success.

i grow in the wilds of alaska, i grow indoors with a 400 mh for budding and a 4 ft fluorescent and a 150 hps for vegging. i've grown northern lights x hash plant, very potent strain, gotta thank RS for that 1, i also grow skunk#11 from dutch passion seed company that my friend from germany sent me via usps,8.1% thc, another potent 1,when i say wilds of alaska i mean wilds of alaska, in february when it's -40 degrees below 0, it's 75 degrees in my grow room and it's green inside, even when it's white and frozen outside. even in the wild's of alaska weed will grow. keep it green & keep on growing. alaskanMnM

my 5 mother plants have now reached the point of sexing and then on to cloning. I've performed this procedure once prior with satisfactory success. Where is the best place on the stem to make the cut with the blade? Should it be a verticle or horizontal slice near a stem node? Does the root hormone formula go bad after a couple of years? Power vs. liquid formula? Should I dissect the Mother plant like a Thanksgiving turkey or keep some of it intact? These are 2nd generation Bubblegum seeds that I cross pollinated from last yrs. crop. Only one outdoors plant fully developed with a high resin content and the smoke was very delicious, but alas - it went quickly. The best dope around here all comes from my sons high school buddies but what is this about selling by grams. I just throw them a C-note and tell 'em to bring me back the smoke. I have grown every single fucken year since 1968, when I was 16. I'm 55 years old now, bought a house, started a business and have raised my family and been married to the same woman for 26 years. Have I gone nutso or ready for rehab - not even close. Praise the THC gods and keep it illegal. Otherwise we lose the "undergrown mentality" and the fellowship that we share. It's a seed, put it in water, some good soil, under a couple HPS light and a brain-dead monkey could make it bud. Keep it simple - If all the leaders of the world got together and smoked some bud, there would be no more problems in this world. Throw down the weapons and pick up the pipes. Let's smoke some "nuclear" instead of bombing people with it. Freedom to all the bothers and sisters of the green bud and may 2008 rid us of that facist George Bush and his facists group of supporters. Elect Obama, he smoked and did inhale (pardons to dumbshit Bill Clinton) As B. Dylan said, "The times, they are a changing.." Just make em change.
Peace out - grow big!

I have found that putting a little vodka or gin in the water helps clones draw up water. And has increased my success rate. Just a little...

Go to Ace Hardware and look for "Greenlight Rooting Hormone." It should only be about $4. It has worked well for me. I usually take my cutting and lighty shave down the stem 1 1/2 inches from the base of the cutting. I rub that into the rooting powder then cut the stem again at the bottom so the stem isn't clogged with rooting powder... works good for me and its cheap. I still have the same stuff so it last a while...

Yiou can use plain water just change it a couple times, if not several times a day. You can build a cheap bubbler system with a tupperware container I seen on sale for 1.97 at wally world. Het a aquarium air pump. long air stone, cut a couple hole in the top to let the stem hang into the water just a bit or right above the water. Never let the stems dry out!! Put a couple drops of peroxide to help stop rot before it can even happen. Add a couple drops of superthrive to speed it up.

go for it

Thanks Idiot Proof! It sounds like a great procedure you have. I'm just and old fart trying to grow my own meds. Since I got my "card", I've started my crop with seeds and just before flowering I tried cloning. The reason is I had to throw 7 great looking plants away as they males and I didn't want to go through that again. Since I'm on a budget I bought a clear outdoors plant dome for $6.00. Then I got some cheap root powder at Wally-World and also some 2" square peat pots. I mixed vermiculite 50/50 with standard potting soil. Since I am limited by law as to how many plants I can have I took 3 cutting from lower sections of the plant and did what Jorge's book told me to do. After I stuck the cuts I put water in the bottom a round pan, put a spacer in the water so the containers where supported just over the water level, and covered them with the clear dome under T5/FL tubes. I did mist them 2-3 times daily as I live in a super dry area. They did show some stress signs like wilting but they came out of it. The upper leaves stayed green but the lower ones slowly yellowed towards the end. In about 18 days roots came out of the bottom of the peat pots! Yippie! I thought it was supposed to hard? The clones look just like mom and they are super vigerous. They even showed sex before going into veg stage. It's turned into a fun hobby for and old guy and keeps me off the shuffle board courts.

My humble apologies.

The water level is adjusted to 1/4 from the top before you pop in any clones, not three days later!

This sytem is cheap, easy and has worked faithfully for years.

Back to my roach.

Dump that water using a piece of air tube as a siphon. An ear bulb works great for starting an air tube water siphon. A wooden clothes pin will hold it in place as is drains. Add a very weak level of the hydro-nutes of your choice to your fresh water and adjust the Ph to 5.2. Your clone bed is ready.

Note: DO NOT use the Oasis cube factory hole, but make your own in any mid-corner. Poke a deep hole with the toothpick and draw it back out, do no widen it.

Cut the 6” clones from the tops for the best babies and dip them immediately rather than making a pile to do later. Cutting them to size on a clean wooden clothes pin chopping block, works for me. Either a straight or a diagonal cut is okay and dip them deep.

Place each clone in ALMOST to the bottom. If you poke through just draw it back up 1/3" or 1/2".

Cover with the clear dome and leave it alone for three days. Leave town if you like.

Remove the dome and leave it off. Cut off any shriveled leaves and leave it alone another three days, then change the water to the new level, 1/4 from the top. The clone-cubes live happiest in water up to their necks.

Your babies are spared the shock of wilted dehydration using this method.

Change the water every three days, clip off the dead stuff and leave it alone. Enjoy the show as they root unattended!

Idiot Proof Clones 1 of 2

and we're off and running!

A gift to my brethren. Idiot-Proof Clones

Parts: 18 each 1 1/2" oasis cubes, new razor blade, toothpick, rooter-dip of your choice, tray with high dome cover, aquarium pump, line, air stone, 18" 20w florescent light, 2’x2’ photo plastic sheet or white paper.

Set up your light 12-14' over where the tray sits. You can use any wall shelf for this. Mount the light to the bottom side of the upper shelf securely with screws. Set your tray under it on your working shelf. Use a sheet of photo plastic to cover the front. Constant air circulation is critical. Enough to influence a match light is enough. A little more is better. Use a small fan indirectly if in closet.

Place up to 18 cubes in the tray and fill it with enough water to cover them. Set the air stone in center and weight it down with a stainless steel nut or a glass rod to keep it submerged. Use nothing that’ll rust. Clip, strap or clamp the hose into place and don’t let it obstruct the on-off of the cover. Let it stand overnight.
