All You Need to Grow

Oops! Wrong Light Schedule
I’m growing six indoor clones with a good set-up (proper lights, ventilation, fans and soil), but I mistakenly grew them on a 12/12-hour light pattern since the start. Now the plants are very short, with few leaves, but they are starting to show flowers and white pistils. Can I put my clones through 24 hours of light so they can return to the vegetative stage to grow bigger, then switch back to 12/12 to get good-sized buds, like I should have done from the start?
PS: It’s been two months.
Rabid Child

Dear Rabid,
Yes, you can make your plants return to vegetative growth, but it will take a while and will definitely stress them out. They have had 12 hours of light for the first two months. Normally, plants will start to flower about two months after they germinate. Your plants are at this point. Since they were grown from seed, they passed through the seedling and vegetative-growth stages even though they received 12 hours of light and 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.

Genetically, most plants are programmed to flower after they have gone through the seedling and vegetative-growth stages. When the nights are long and the days are short, this function is basically automatic.

Since your plants just started to flower, and since they are at the proper chronological age to do so, turning the lights to 24 hours now should induce vegetative growth in a month or less. The growth will be strange at first—that is, the leaves will produce one blade, then three blades a few weeks later, and finally progress to five or seven blades. The stem will also be a bit gnarly near the base.

Within a month or two, the plants will be 12 to 18 inches tall. Induce flowering with the 12/12 day/night light schedule at that point.
The plants will have suffered a lot of stress, and they could easily become a target for pests and diseases. If you have more seeds, start them now as an insurance policy against any mishaps with your current crop.

Grow Cabinet
I am a longtime reader and a longtime grower, about 50/50 indoors and out. But I have been on a six-year sabbatical due to my career and the travel it requires.

I grow for medicine. I am not a criminal. Could you recommend a strain that will do well in a grow cabinet? Is heat going to be an issue with two 430-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights in the 27” x 54” x 46” box that BC Northern Lights calls the Producer? Would soil work instead of hydroponics in that small area? I have mainly been an indica-seed grower. Will switching to clones mean that I lose the main cola? Do you have any other pros and cons to enlighten me with?

Grateful Head

Dear Grateful Head,
Once a grower, always a grower! Now you are growing for medicine. I know so many growers who stopped for one reason or another and now are back at it. Thanks for joining the growing ranks once again!

There are many strains that do well in a small space. Since you have the most experience with indicas, you should look for short, indica-dominant strains such as Hash Plant crosses, Opium (Paradise), just about anything from TH Seeds, etc. Each of the 430-watt lamps in the Producer by BC Northern Lights has its own ventilation system that whisks the hot air generated by the bulbs directly out of the cabinet. The heat doesn’t have time to affect the temperature inside the box much. The lamps also heat the roof of the container. This heat does build up a little, but it’s dissipated through the top of the enclosure.

The unit was designed to function with a hydroponic garden. It contains a pump, reservoir and containers, as well as an automated irrigation system with a manual override. You could switch to soil, but it would be pointless to rip out a hydroponic system that you have just purchased. There are other grow cabinets on the market that do not come equipped with a hydroponic garden. Such a cabinet would be more economical to purchase if you want a soil garden.

You should switch to clones for best production if you plan to use a small grow closet. Clones are more manageable than plants grown from seed. Clones taken from a mother plant are guaranteed to be female; seeded plants are not. Clones grow consistently, retaining the same height and growth pattern; seeded plants do not. If you flower the plants in a small grow container, you will have to have another space where you can cultivate mothers and clones. Clones easily retain the main cola, or central stem and bud. Also, it’s very easy to trim off the lower branches to achieve a lone central bud.

I am having an issue with my dutch passion blueberry clones from a few diff. mothers,it cant just be the one plant, the leaves on the DP BB are curling downward like your palm down and making a 3/4 fist , they are not discolored (yellow or dead) they are very dark green and curling down , is it just how the blueberry strain grows or is it a deficiency in something,All the other strains(whiteberry g13 haze, superskunk, bluecheese)are doing wonderful .I am using advanced nutrients , i have the full line of it and its in a TFL system I just dont get it why are my blueberry leaves curling like that...any help?

cannabinoid: You have probably figured your problem out seeing as how u posted 3 weeks ago but oh well. Size isn't gonna tell you the sex. Once you cut the lights back from 24 on to 12/12 on/off about a week or 2 later you should be able to tell. a female is gonna grow a white hair, or pistol, and a male will grow little balls, which look like seed pods. if they were seeds you wouldnt see them yet. all the males MUST be seperated from the females or your females will produce seeds. the more seed the less thc per plant. males can be used for consumption (brownines)

cindy, if you went from 24 on, straight to 12/12, you probably shocked the plant, I have had the same thing happen to me. I try to gradually introduce darkness, like 22 on 2 off for a week, then 20 on 4 off for a week and so-on til you reach 12/12. I have actually had plants turn brown and dry out completely in 2 days by jumping right in to 12/12 from 24 on. I hope it works out 4 ya- c -- think of the suns natural cycles, it doesnt go straight to 12/12, it sits at 14/10 sometimes 16/8 depending on the seasons and geographical location and gradually works its way towards flowering cycles of 12/12

ok, can anybody tell me a sure fire way to distinguish male from femal plants? i have 3 all from the same strain, 1 is huge, 2 are short and stacked, all 3 germinated at the same time. Am I correct in assuming the huge 1 is a male and the 2 shorties are female? thx C

I am growing for the first time and I am asking for guidance. My plant (only 1) is approx. 40" tall, 5 mos old, looked good until yesterday (5/11/08). I have begun 12/12 light/dark and today the leaves-all of them are curling and shriveling, she sounds dry when I touch the leaves tho has plenty of dampness to the soil. Leave are still dark green and she has the look of flowering. What is going on?

Peter,
When transferring indoor plants to the outside, do not plant them in the soil right away. Set the pots outside in the shade for about a week and watch for signs of dehydration. This will give them time to adjust to the intensity of sunlight and heat. When temps are high, and especially if a wind is blowing as well, the plants will have high transpiration rates and will likely need daily watering. Do not fertilize until it is obvious that the transplants have successfully adapted to the change.

How do plants go when they are transfered from the indoors to the out doors if the sun and temperature in hot?

gg,
I never grow outdoors, but a lot will depend on your geographic latitude because this will determine how many hours of light your plant receives. Just hazarding a guesstimate, I would look to perhaps November. Also, potentcy of any given plant depends on the strain you've planted.

i have started my own plant and it is growing very well in my garden sourounded buy tomatos, watermelon and various other veggies...and the pets droppings seem to be helping the growth. this is my 1st plant;it can grow freely and is in great health. the question is;when does it start 2 bud and is there any tips to help it gain strength in its potency.

lets just say i had a plant growing, about a foot and a half or so tall, and i had already topped it.would it severely damage the plant to cut off the top set of fan leaves?the ones on the outside of the topped shoots, not the actual tops.

hey little girl.. my last post i said the plant will start flowering as the days get longer.. lmao.. they flowwer when the days get shorter..lol

feminized seeds arent 100% female.. youll still get males and hermies.. its just the ratio is a lot higher than normal.. depending on how the flower was seeded.. Gibrellic Acid can be used for a higher ratio of females...
most probably youll have a female plant.. best to check just be sure all the same..

Bud4u,
aero hydroponics isnt really for a beginner grower.. its a real advanced system... altho its not complicated problems can and usually will arise that you need to be right onto.. how ever honed right can produce some great results..theres a few grow diaries at ozstoners.com you can check out and have a look.. but really it runs pretty much the same as any hydroponics system.. once up and running.. have youre ppm's at around 1400-1800 and ph some where around 5.8 - 6.8 aim for 6.3mist for 15 mins every hour.. or if you feel they need more.. or you see them wilt.. then try 15mins on 15 mins off
others on the site could probably help you out a lot more.. as we have a few members that swear by this method of growing.. check it out

Look close to the ground and make sure the main stem hasn't broken. You can bandage a broken plant, sometimes you need a splint but it can be done if you catch it soon enough. GG

SukonmiSkunk... thank you!! i am on my way to get some fish emulsion today!! luckily the mistake was made only once! phew- she's already 1 ft. now- i topped her and she seemed to like it... my seeds were guaranteed female, this means i do not have to worry about the sex right? i am reading these posts &q&a copiously for tips- thanks to all for the great info- peace

Jun 12 2007, 8:56 pm

little girl.. a 20 20 20.. nutrient mix is for a flowering plant... growing plants need twice the amount of nitrogen.. so you need some thing like a 10 10 20... then switch to a 20 20 20 for when you notice real flowers... not pre flowers
depending on where you are.. the plant will start flowering when the days start to get longer.. i would say youll be in veg for a little while yet. at 5 inches tall.. you should be looking to get preflowers showing the sex soon..
come visit us at ozstoners.com and search the boards.. theres everything there..

hey rev.. come and visit us at www.ozstoners.com

for starters.. a 500water is not enough light for that space.. 5foot x5foot.. you would need a 1000wattHPS.. now.. 9 pots would fit in there equally.. I would go a full recirculated hydro set up.. fuck the soil off.. hydro is way easier.. with way better yields and faster results... especially since youre already starting from clones.. visit our site.. ive done a step by step tutorial on setting up an 8 pot recirculation system.. also a week by week grow guide.. that even my sister can follow..
youre lights need to be 18 on 6 off.. for vegative growth and 12 on 12 off for flowering growth.. theres NO need to change the light times .. and theres certainly no need to be running them 24 hours a day... plants need dark time.. oh.. and dont bother with sticking them outside.. just leave them under the lights..
if youre in the US, then your outdoor season is right now.. so if you want to grow outdoors.. take your clones as per normal.. as soon as they got roots.. they go out side.. just like a seedling.. my friend clones them straight outdoors.. then out in to the bush in about 4-5 weeks.. or when you notice them growing..he gets on adverage a pound per plant.. minumum of 12 ounces.. someplants were well over the pound mark this year..
cant stress enough.. visit our site.. everything you need, with well seasoned growers from all over the world.. not just Oz.. live chat support too

Im have been growing for 5 or so year now and cant seem to be getting full results. I all ways start from clone,
-First & Second weeks are 24hrs light (500 watt HDS)(area 5x5)(6inch pots)(light 1foot away)(rich compost soil)
- Third & Forth weeks are 16hrs light & 8 dark
- Fifth week outside for
12-15 sunlight June,July,Aug,Sept,Oct.
I always us neutrints, and water every other day.
I quess my question 4 you is: Am I doing it right? and how much dope should I be geting off a plant?

Granny on cloning:

May 28 2007, 2:54 am

I have cloned in soil. I have cloned in bubblejugs.
I now have an aero cloner, and I have a 100% success rate with it!

I have posted in the newer "thread" a website to get a cheap gel cloner. Looks really great I want to get one to play with.

And here is a real "Crazy old lady" trick... Willow trees are LOADED with natural rooting hormones. ALL Willows have the stuff in the branches. You can try rooting in water with a willow branch as long as the container is dark, (light grows algae) You can also water clones with water in which willow branches are soaking.
Even though I use a liquid rooting hormone in my cloner, I try to always have a couple of willow branches in there too. Besides, this planet needs all the trees it can get, so I plant the willows in the woods. Hope this helps someone... GG

Hey, when my boyfriend went off to university and left me his car I found some seeds in with a bag of twigs and a bud (lucky me) and I wondered if it is at all possible to grow them outside at this time of year? As an amateur to this game I would be very greatful if you could explain to me how to grow them, take cuttings and sex them etc? Thanks.

Clonin Maniac

May 23 2007, 7:22 pm

I had 2 mom's before they died on me. Luckily I was able to successfully clone almost 60 plants off of them. All together I think I clipped around 70 clones. 10 didn't make it. Just find you a nice branch stickin out and cut it with atleast 1/2 in of stalk. Try to cut it at 45 degree angle if you can, helps with the rooting. Once you cut it dip the end in a root stimulator and here comes the opinion section. I did all my clones in soil. Rockwool is good, but you can't leave your plant in it for to long for this will cause it not to root very well. I recomend taking for each clone 2 plastic cups. Make sure one is clear. Take the cup that will hold the dirt and cut 4 small holes along the bottom edge of the cup and place it inside of the clear cup. This will allow the roots to grow inside the cup and then out the holes when they are long enough. Jab your finger down in the dirt and insert your clone. Leave under florescent lights for about a week maybe 2 and then transplant into bigger pot for veggin'.

alright, is there a safe way to clone plants, i have read a few articles and is it possible to do, and are4 the yeilds much more different than the parent plant?

Am I baked?

May 23 2007, 2:31 pm

Haha, alright Organic dude, I have yet another question for ya. I have a friend who instead of using the FIM method he'll just cut off the big sucker leaves so long as it will leave about 1/4in or more of twig(branch) whatever you wanna call it. He says that this will cause that part to create a node and shoot off 2 branches from it and by doing this it keeps the nugs tight and big along the branch. I don't plan on flowering these plants I've got, I want to use them as mothers for cloning. Should I do any kind of pruning on them or should I just leave them be and start cloning when I'm ready?

Am I baked?

May 23 2007, 2:17 pm

To 25kw: No matter what kind of smoke your curing you should expect your nugs to be a third of the weight when you harvest. THANX ORGANIC DUDE. I've had my babies sittin in the window sill for the last few days. The big one isn't showing signs of recovery yet. I'm gonna give it another week or so and if it doesn't perk up then I'm gonna rip it up. The mother plants that my friend was using to clone from were clones that started out in Rockwool, but were left in it for to long and they never rooted. Only had like 3 roots, but it grew to about 10in tall and pretty bushy. These clones were dirt born so I don't think that should be an issue. What do you think?

to stressin' out. im a little new at this but june first may be a little early to stick them in the ground outside just yet, especially if some havent sprouted yet. They should be in the veg stage first then gradually moved into the intense sunlight. your cf ,the curled florecent is a good buy, your sprouts will like it. get another if you can. you seedling should all have their own container. if not you going to have to seperate them sooner or later. i say this from only expirience and have no training what so ever, you can CAREFULLY dig up your seeds that havnt sprouted yet and check on them. Would not recomend puting them outside, known only through expirience though. if you want to grow outdoors which would yield more n e ways i would put them in containers still.

May 23 2007, 3:25 am

whats up everyone. due to my despensery being shut down by the man i am tempted to grow my own being able to get a few clone of sour disiel before they closed. this is my second time growing and using some cheap soil in 1 gallon containers. Once i transplanted into containers the lower leaves started to turn light green then yellow with tips turned down. tested ph n,p,k and ph is 7 but p and k were much highier then nitrogen levels. Flushed w/ mild fox farm grow big in hopes to this would work. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated. does anyone know if fox farm ferts. go bad.
Plus have a mh 400 watt but puts my small closet space over 95 deg f. What shoul i do. Air conditioner would be costly to buy and run. Anyone use one of those air cooler units that use water and ice. Please help dont want my buds coming out like they did last time, poping when burned, tasting bad and loose. thinking about buying a hortilux conversion bulb.

STRESSIN' OUT!!!!

May 22 2007, 10:59 pm

Thats another one of my problems though, im on a $0 budget. I hate to be this way, but I've either "borrowed" or stolen everything exept for the dreaded miracle grow soil. so just today i went to the local hardware store and picked up one of the curled up fluorescent lights (40 watts) and in about 16 hours, the tip of the leaf that was yellow has greened up a little more, and the temperature has dropped from 32 degrees celcius, to 30 degrees celcius with the new light i had installed.

One last thing though, I still have roughly 6 seeds that havent sprouted through the soil yet. Do i have to wait until they spout and develop a stable root system before i transfer them? would that be wise, or should i go ahead and carefully dig out the seeds and attept to replant in the organic soil?

organic_dude

May 22 2007, 4:45 pm

DON'T STRESS... GET A 1,000 watt HPS and you'll be set if you have to grow indoors. I suspect that the leaves are yellow due to the miracle grow. Seeded plants don't need any miracle grow or anything with fertizlizers in it. Miracle grow comes packed with nasty stuff like urea as well. STICK TO ORGANIC SOILS AND NUTRIENTS AND YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. Miracle Grow SUCKS. Start plants in something purely organic such as Fox Farm or Happy frog. It comes packed with the essential organic ingredients that are infact outstanding for seed germination.

STRESSIN' OUT!!!!

May 22 2007, 12:41 pm

I'm growing a few plants with a 40 watt INCANDESCENT bulb. Will that do more damage than good? My grow box is 28x18x15, and I can't fit one of those long tube shaped fluorescent lights inside, so i am forced to stick with a normal bulb. my plants are just starting to sprout and already one of the little leaves is turning a bit yellow on the tip. I am using enriched miracle grow formula with a fertilizer ratio of 14.14.14, i water daily or every second day(depending on the saturation of the soil) and i dont have enough money to purchase a thermometer and hygrometer. i plan to transfer these plants to the outdoors once they start the vegitative stage(if not, then june 1st) and i cant afford to lose potential yield due to the wrong conditions when the plants were planted. please help me out.

darkgreen, i know what your getting at by asking that question. you could start off by giving them 11on13off at start of flowering that would ensure they flower. but i think ur just cheating yourself if you do it at the end. plants eat light.I seems to me like u would be putting your plants on a diet man. no goooooood.

I wouldn't give up on the plant yet. Continue to put it in filtered sunlight and check to see if it perks back up any, that will be a sure sign she is still surviving. Be sure not to over water though since they aren't using much water due to the shock of the intense sun.

When transfering clones from floresent lights to outdoors under the sun you shouldn't put them into direct sunlight right off the bat. Put them in filtered sunlight for atleast o i'd say a week or so. They should be fine after that. I think they wilted from the intensity of the UV rays, so make sure you wein them into full sunlight. GOOD LUCK MAN!

I recently was given 2 clones from a friend. He had been growing and cloning them indoors . One of them was about 6 inches tall and the other about 4 (but still seedling like. Purplish stem and kinda flimsy). They had been under 24 hours of Grolux lights since cloned. I put them outside around 9 in the morning the day after I got them. I stuck my finger down in the soil of the bigger plant and it was dry all the way to my knuckle on my index finger so I poured about 400mL of Aquafina bottled water in it and put them outside in the sun. They probably had about 6 hours of direct sunlight then were shaded for the rest of the day. This morning I find my bigger clone with the leaves wilted and sagging down. Does anyone know what might have happened?

I got arrested on an old warrant from 2 years ago, for drug paraphenalia. I had 12, 5 inch plants sitting in my living room in plain sight.I also had tons of pot and pipes and pot magezines laying around the place. The arresting officer must have either been stupid, or just did not care because he said nothing and just took me on the warrant.Has this happened to anyone else?

why must i grow!!!???

hey curious .yes you can get good results off fluorescent (CFL)lights.as a first time grower you may want go with a simple setup. It takes up alot of spare time.you can get a flood light at home depot for $43 (6825 lumens) made w/ fluorex
get a fan some seeds and soil. pots. white posterboard or paint. that will get you started. then you can start tweeking the temperature and humidity.but it will grow and crystals will form. if you want HPS Then you can get it later and use the fluoro's for your clone area.

hey curious... the bare minimum i would use to keep you in enough smoke, would be a 400watt HPS with a 2 pot recirculating hydroponics system..this system will give you around 8-12 ounces every 10-12 weeks... look around for a decent size wardrobe.. you want it around 1.4m wide by 600mm deep.. 1.8 high... look around for a wardrobe that has a top section.. or a smaller side section so you can do your clones.. or keep a mother plant.. seeds are great, but you will increase the grow turnover and yield with clones.. no need to pick out the males.. no waisted space or energy.. maximum production...
have a gander around our site.. heaps of pics, heaps of different setups.. indoors and out.. will give you an idea on what works and what doesnt..
www.ozstoners.com
sign up for a free account.. lots of seasoned growers from all over the world that can help in many many ways.. even a live a chat room for one on one questions.. HPS is the only way to flower MJ.. anyone saying any different.. is NOT a grower... sure, other lights will get you results.. ive even seen decent results from flouros.. but if you want the ducks guts, premium bud.. you need a HPS..

yes it will change colors.but your leaves shouldnt change color you should be able to see it on leaf underside.(i used grape koolaid and grapejuice. only 1 leaf so far has turned very purple resulting in it shriveling up and dying on half the leaf.all the other leaves only are turning purple on the main leaf veins. small doses of grape juice from here on out.

I recently read on a seed dealer's web site to keep the last two weeks of your grow in total darkness b4 harvest. I've read that 24 hours of darkness increases THC saturation the day b4 picking but never heard of two weeks in the dark. Anyone hear of that??

Cheap C02 system

May 16 2007, 3:39 am

This is a design for a C02 system based off the bakin soda and vinegar method. all that is needed is a plant waterer(Green little bottle with spike you screw on the bottom. drips water slowly. ) a old gallon container water works best. cut the top section of the handle 2 cuts about an inch should be cut out. tape off hole on main container that you just made.take a section of a garden hose 1 ft long and fit it to handle now sticking up in the air. fill with baking soda, put plant waterer bottle up on top, secure with tape, fill with vinegar and put up on top shelf.very compact design. make as many as u can 4 best effect.working very well so far.

most bottled water will raise your ph. use distilled water. shop around for the cheapest gallons in your area. 64 cents here at walmart DONT USE TAP WATER unless you can adjust ph and remove chlorine.

Newby to granny

May 15 2007, 3:27 am

Well the plant didn't make it :( But now that I think about it, when I was watering when I first got the plant, I was using purified water and it was growing nice
and I remember switching over to tap water and around that time, thats when things started messing up. I dont have a PH tester and I'm not sure where to get an
inexpensive one either. I'm guessing aquarium stores might have them.
I started with the tomato seeds and mixed some fert with tap water and the stems of the young sprouts turned to a purple color
and the bottom of the seed leaves are turning purple aswell. Its in a soilless mix and I just started to feed according to directions. What type of water should I use? Is purified better than distilled or distilled better than purified?
Should I use tap water at all? I'm good with germinating and getting sprouts to come up.
Get back to me when you get a chance.

Newby,the fan...

May 14 2007, 9:34 pm

Watch for mold if you have no fan. Moisture evaporates from the soil and the heat of the lamps then just sits there during the dark time. A fan will also cool the closet.
If it's just the lower leaves you will probably be fine, they tend to die off during flowering even outside, as you get close to harvest. I never figured out why. GG

***CORRECTION*** Dude... DANK, correction man:

"You shouldn't need much more nitrogen during the veagatative state with the worm castings, but if you decide to fertilize make sure you GET something that doesn't have a lot of nitrogen in it.

organic_dude

May 14 2007, 4:18 pm

Worm Casting are going to be most beneficial through the vegetative state since they contain a great amount of nitrogen. You shouldn't need much more nitrogen during the vegatative state with the worm castings, but if you do decide to fertilize make sure you don't get something that doesn't have a lot of nitrogen in it. Also note that Nitrogen is very important but they need many more nutrients aside from it during vegetative growth. In some cases you might hve a strain that is a very heavy feeder and can take fertilizer everyday regaurdless of what is already in your soil. It might come down to getting to know the strain. Furthermore, I would like to reccomend something called compost tea. It has beneficial microbes that inhance the life of yor soil. Its an all natural solution that works like fertiziler which will be highly beneficial during all stages of growth. You can't go wrong with the stuff. MAN YOU NEED TO READ HIGHTIMES MORE! GET THE MAY 2006 ISSUE YOU WILL DISCOVER QUITE A BIT ABOUT COMPOST TEA AND ORGANIC GROWING IN GENERAL INCLUDING A FABULOUS ALL ORGANIC SOIL RECIPE.

NEW NEW- I can reccomend an awesome all organic fertizlizer that is packed with beneficial microbes and is available in both grow and bloom solutions. Its called Age Old. again available in both grow and bloom formulas. If you use the Age old Nutrients with some compost tea you will have the best soil FUCKIN PACKED with benefical microbes and bacterias/Fungi.

Batman, if you wanna have sucess w a small personal garden (2-6 plants or so), have about seven hundred dollars at least to invest in quality equipment. It could be done for less, but if you are going to do this, your taking certain risks, depending on where you live, so you should set-up as nicely as possible. Proper lighting, ventilation, atmospheric controls, genetics and attention are the building blocks to a stellar crop.

Browse as many cannabis related websites as possible and maybe purchase a book or two. You really would be doing yourself a favor as an aspiring gardener to study the techniques of others.

Run a search on google video for cannabis grow.

Plenty of great information is as close to you as this website.(High Times)

1.Define the goal.(cultivate)
2. Do I have the information I need to meet this goal?
3. If yes, proceed, if no, obtain as much information from a variety of sources and study.
4. Trial and Error
5. Repeat

May 7 2007, 1:26 am

First get something strong like some hemp or whatever you would use to tie up tomato vines. The only thing you need to do is tie it to plants main stem and stake it down or tie it to something when you have the proper arch. Just try to be very gentle and don't tie it tight to the main stem. Leave room for it to grow as the stem will get fatter.

Ok, I took the plant back to my girls house due to privacy reasons over here. I fertilized the plant for her on Friday of last wk
but now the lowest set of leaves out of the 2 sets is turning kind of yellow lol One of the tips on the leaflets is kind of curling up
and it seems dry to the touch. I have no idea wtf is going on now lol I put it into new soil when you told me to and some roots came off.
She has it in her closet with the 12on/12off light cycle but she doesnt have a fan in there. About once or twice a day she opens the door to let fresh air in. I wonder if the lack of air circulation could affect
the plant in any way and if so, how? The fertilizer I used was of a liquid organic type which I applied slightly over a wk ago.
The soil is moist and not dry. Granny if you hear me, let me know your thoughts yah. Thanks

HOW LONG DO I WAIT BEFORE WATERING/FEEDING MY SPROUTING PLANTS?

organic_dude

May 5 2007, 3:37 pm

Sativas are known to grow tall and lanky. Indicas are known to be fatter and bushier but if you know how to grow well, they will get tall. I know this from experience since the majority of the indica strains I have delt with did, they got to be like 10-11 feet. Believe it or not... The sativas will sometimes get ridiculously tall though, don't be surprised to see a 20 footer. When it comes to topping you need to remember that it will stunt the growth of the plant significantly. Generally speaking, topping cannabis plants will make it grow in a wider mannor, but it will also to continue to get tall along with the lateral gorwth. Ater the growth comes to a complete halt for up to 2 weeks of course. However, you will need to keep topping the plant if you want to prevent vertical growth but thats just an unreasonable amount of stress. I wouldn't even consider doing that. A better route to go would be to bend the plants over. Its a much more efficent way of allowing the plant to continue growing while eliminating the vertical growth and without all that crazy stress.

DANK

I WAS GONNA TOP IT TO KEEP IT SHORT MORE THAN ANYTHING . HOW MUCH SHORTER DOES TOPPING MAKE A PLANT THAN IT WOULD BE NORMALLY. ITS A MOSTLY SATIVA STRAIN

organic_dude

May 5 2007, 12:09 pm

DANK,a node is where the branch grows out. You can top as early as you see the third node grow out. The age of the plant has nothing to with deciding whether or not you should top it. If it atleast has 3 nodes you can top it on that third one. Just take a razor blade and cut it off if you want. Remember topping isn't always necessary it really stresses the plant and halts for growth for up to 2 weeks sometimes more sometimes less. Figure out why you think you should top the plant, if you don't have to don't.

Dank

May 4 2007, 9:28 pm

I dont really understand where nodes are on plants so where exactly should i cut a plant when topping? And when should i cut as in how old the plant is or how big it is in heighth or what? Thanx for the help organic

organic_dude

May 4 2007, 8:22 pm

DANK, that all depends on and the enviroment and season, and the type of plant being transplanted(clones or seeded plants). If you live in an area with a high concentration of insects or pot eating species then its up to decide whether or not you should even risk putting them outide. Remember this as a general overview... Seeded plants have a better survival rate out side...!You most likely won't have a problem throwing a young seeded plant outside in spring time unless you live somewhere where its unusually warm. During early spring the U.V rays aren't strong enough to cause any harm. Towards the end of spring early summer you might want to put young seeded plants outside under filtered sun. I have to reccomend not putting cloned plants outside in direct sunlight no matter what the season is. From experience I know that you should put clones in filtered sunlight for short peroids at a time to insure that no rays will do dammage. As time goes on you can put them out in the filtered light for longer peroids of time and eventually throw them out in the direct sunnage. I would say wait 2 weeks atleast with clones. MUCH LUCK

May 3 2007, 3:22 pm

My buddy grew some clones indoors and they put you to sleep. Others of the same mother grown elsewhere are fine. The setup is good, but some temperature swings and fresh air could be an issue. I suspect an early or late harvest, or possibly overwatering? The current batch are looking smaller than normal with some leaf twisting. They are definitely stressed. I doubt overfertilization as the soil receives only tap water the last 7 days before harvest, and the fertilizer is always the same. Help??

organic_dude

May 3 2007, 2:07 pm

From experience I know that the lighter green is usually fresh new growth. You shouldn't base anything what so ever on the color as each strain has its own unique color, I mean i've seen strains of the same kind that were different colors. To speak in a very general mannor the lighter green is usually young new fresh growth and the mature established leaves should be darker green in color which tells you they have an adequate supply of Nitrogen.

organic_dude

May 3 2007, 2:01 pm

Its so funny to read some of these comments you people have. Its seems like some people have so many complications and are so confused. It's like what is so hard about growing pot.? Good strains/seeds, Good soil, good water, the right type of light with the proper duration of the light and possibly some fertilizer. The real key to success is too take in as much info as you can and experiment ya know, try it out. Find out first hand for yourself what works and what doesn't. Dont be shy to go to a hydroponic shop or gardening/ farming store and ask them questions. Feel them out first, find out if they seem cannabis friendly as you mght be able to directly base your questions on the cannabis. If not tell them you are growing tomatoes as tomatoes need all the same things cannabis needs. I hope I made it simple enough for all you.

Questions are good. U want to learn. The Yellow leaves are goners, pluck them. If you foliar feed it might take a few days to see improvement. I don't think flowering will be delayed, lets hope no more leaves go yellow.
Ok.
The difference is: A determinate plant will stop getting bigger at a certain size, and an indeterminate plant will take over the world!
The two plants aren't identical, BUT, tomatos will show the same symptoms of nutrient troubles, bug damage, water needs stuff like that. That the 2 can be grown within a few feet of each other, and both will thrive says they have the same needs. You will learn about growing.
I found my source for Micro Tom (the miniature tomato plant) www.rhshumway.com 800-342-9461 catalog # 00468 a pkt of 20 seeds is $2.40 . You will be amazed at the tiny tomatos! I grew a bunch and sold them for five bucks a plant! People were buying them like crazy because they're rare. Don't be nervous. You will learn from doing. You don't have to grow the micro tom, but if you want to now U can get the seed, it's a really excellent catalog to look at so ask for 1 if you call.
Before I forget, if you can, try to take a clone from your poor sick plant from lower branches. That way, you have a backup. And if it roots up, you will have another to flower when the first is done.
I'm crossin my fingers 4 ya. GG

Whats the differance between determinate and indeterminate? Also, I fertilized the plant a couple days ago
and want to know how long it'll take to see results. The bottom 2 sets of leaves out of the 4 sets have turned yellow. Will they heal to a nice green color? Or are those leaves gone for good? And since I put it into the flowering cycle,
how long will the flowering be delayed by? Working with tomatoe plants will give me exact practice that I'll need to grow cannabis, right? sorry for all the ?'s lol

OMG! I just saw your last sentence about the mulch... ok 2 things: wood mulch will use up N (nitrogen) in ur soil as it decomposes, which right now might be helping if U over fertilized... BUT DUDE
What disease killed the tree? R U sure you didn't bring fungus, and the pain in the ass fungus gnats to Ur plant?
Lava rock is a good breathable mulch. Roots need oxygen like leaves need CO2. Why do you even need mulch? GG

I have mini roses like 50, and perhaps when flowering the same nutes apply, but I have been growing tomatos for nearly 50 years, and the two grow well together.
I HAVE had vine ripened tomatos in February with just a south window for light. They are not difficult at all and will in fact volunteer out side and fruit with no help from humans or bees. As I've said tomatos are self fertile! The plant has everything it needs without ANY intervention except maybe a breeze. Tomatos will auto-flower, they are like ruderalis, when the plant is old enough, it will flower and make tomatos, given the proper amount of calcium, they will be perfect fruits.

The flourescents spoken of here are CFL Flood lamps 120 watt. Four of them add up to 480 watts, AND don't produce the heat or use the energy that HID lights do. You can't burn a plant with them. You can put them inches from seedlings.
I have to say, that growing roses is more difficult than the other 2. The reason for the kids to play with tomato plants is to get experience with plants in general. We are trying to help people that have never grown anything before. It's also alot easier to clone tomatos than roses.
A plant that is intended for outdoors can only be put out AFTER the last frost date, so, to avoid frost or bug or bird damage it's best to put out a strong healthy plant.
The roses ARE a great idea to discourage theft in outdoor grows, but, I would add predator bugs in the mix. Roses are bug magnets here!
So, Newby baby, the tomatos don't need 24 hrs, save $ and go 18/6. You don't have to hurry them. What they WILL teach you is what over/under nutes look like, cloning, bugs, water req., and the joy of growing a plant without getting all "Bevis" over it. GG

It had great resin glands over it. the plant is 6 to 8 inches high that and has wide leaves with 5 tips on each. it has a nice green color and at the top of the plant it is REALL lime green. i am using general hydroponics diamond nectar and biobizz OMRI organic 1.8-0.1-6.6. i also have liquid feed miracle gro which 14-?*-?... I have it in a 3 gallon soil bucket with great tomatoe plant soil. i also bought some super thrive. what will i need to do to have beautiful crop by june. Oh i also cut down an old tree and the inside was rotted so i used it for a 1 inch thick mulch?

newby,
... some say tomatoes are like MJ plants to grow.. yes.. they are very similar.. how ever roses and MJ are exactly the same.. same ph, same nutrient levels and same light hours...
tomatoes indoors dont usually go too well .. you need bees for pollenation.. other wise youll have to collect the pollen and pollinate yourself..
personally.. i wouldnt bother learning on tomatoes and just start with a few clones of MJ.. or seedlings.. MJ is a weed and is very hard to kill.. tomatoes are way less forgiving than MJ ever will be... a perfect biginners set up I think is a small 2 door closet/wardrobe with a 400wattHPS light.. mine has a 2 pot recirculated hydroponics system with 2 plants I can yield upto and over 8 ounces a grow... i now its not a lot.. and youre definately not going to get rich with this set up.. but its a great place to learn.. and is cheap to set up.. also when you decide to expand.. as ALL indoor growers will eventually .. the wardrobe comes in very handy for cloning and seedlings

Frank,
you shouldnt use flouros for seedlings... i find they dont have enough guts to grow a strong plant. If they are going outside.. then its best to raise the seedlings outside from the start...
I grow indoors.. and I raise my seedlings under a 400watter.
for grow books.. theres only 2 books you will ever need...
Marijuana Botany, by Robert C Clark
and the insiders growers guide by Mel Frank.. he also has a growers guide.. for general growing.. and he also has an outsiders growers guide
as for the 24/0 verses 18/6.. it was put to me like this.. plants use the dark period to do about 75% of their growing.. they also need this dark period to assist in the photosynthisis process... also.. flouros would make a lot of difference.. but when using HID's personally i think the electricity bill looks a hell of a lot better when youre using 18/6

For tomatoes, I could put them under 24hrs of light right? and how would I induce flowering? Pretty much I could do what I was doing
with the cananbis plant but I'd be practicing on tomatoe plants instead, right? Like use 24hrs of light and force flower at my desired height. Would I still need 12hr on/12hr off for tomatoe plants? Or is it differant?
I would rather do this than risk killing precious cannabis plants just to perfect my cultivating techniques lol. Get back to me granny.

For a quick fix foliar feed the plant, make sure to do this right before the lights go out and get the undersides good and wet with the feed.
Spray with plain water the next day. Yippee! GG

Granny on tomatos

Apr 29 2007, 3:18 am

Well like I said before, look for DETERMINATE varieties. The "Micro Tom" would be perfect I'll look up where to get them tomorrow.
While the two aren't "identical" they are very similar. You can even clone tomatos at the end of the season and have vine ripe cherry tomatos in February, and then if you take more clones, have the first ripe tomatos in town. There is a common idea that pinching new suckers (new growth above branches) will make the plant produce more. But I have always done the opposite and pinched off the older nonflowering branch, and most times it's replaced by one with flowers.
Tomatos are self fertile, no male or female. The things that are similar is the nutes, water, ph,etc. All that, plus learning to grow a plant without having to worry about killing it is excellent practise. Both plants require rather high calcium levels, and you can use tomato products on both plants,{I can't wait to see what my "special" nutrients do for tomatos}! It's not too L8 to start seeds. But seedlings are just as good. Those you will want to repot to BIG pots right away. Bury them right up to the bottom leaves just like cannabis. Same thing outdoors. Ask what you need to know! GG

Although I'm kind of new to SOG, remember they're clones, that means that once they have vegged they are IDENTICAL in age and genetics to the mother plant. Treat them the same as you would if you were flowering the mother.I hope that helps...

Rooky, I can help you all you want with tomatos. First thing if you are going to buy a plant or seed make sure you get one that is marked DETERMINATE, and not indeterminate. I wish I could send you some of my Micro Tom seeds. Those are true miniature plants and would be perfect for you. if you want I will look up where you can order them.

Frank....... The reason I say 18/6 is because they are seedlings and need a little rest. If they were clones 24 would be the thing to do. Let the little ones get a good root system before you 24 them. And that's why. GG

i want to practic on my growing techniques so im thinking about practising on tomatoes. so like if im able to grow tomatoes indoors with the same tools

with cannabis. if anyone has knowledge of this pls let me know.

Newby! Sorry, just re read ur post
The stem depends on the age of the plant and the type. Young plants are green and smooth, but older plants and clones (which are older to begin with) will get darker.
When plants switch from veg to flower, the requirements change, and the need for phosphorus and potassium go up. that's the P,K of the NPK, so, to be safe add bone meal instead of blood meal to the worm castings to flower. Keep flowering. The pearlite is good cause roots need air.
Don't sweat the soil mix too much. I use Stagreen container mix and add pearlite and soil microbes. I foliar feed. If you can find it Green Light makes a tomato blossom spray that's loaded with the stuff a flowering plant needs the most. Sometimes, I think a plant can be worried to death, I have done that. Holler if you need me. GG

You're doing good! You don't need a microscope, that's only if you want to see the resin glands up close! A pair of strong reading glasses is what I use (but then I am an old fart)... You can see the mites with the naked eye if you really look close. the webs is what give them little nasties away. Bugs will generally be on the undersides of the leaves. I think if you get a book, you will probably become a great grower. You are really trying. Don't give up! I was a tomato growing freak for years, still am but now I concentrate on sweet tomatos. The 2 plants like the same soil and nutes, so, if you can try growing tomatos as well. It'll give you practise. I used to hide my plants in behind my tomatos. It worked great, but you have to bend the back plants when they're small so they don't grow taller than the tomatos.
Well, repot and I've heard that worm castings are the perfect plant food. Try just that and see if mother nature will help fix the plant. Still here 4 U...GG

Or could it be a sign that I DO have to fertilize? lol because when I got the plant it had a small amount of roots
and it was healthy all this time and it was growing quick then it started to slow down a bit and I doubt its root bound.
You said I might have a P difficency so it could be that it used up all the P. I'm going to repot it into fresh soil and see what happens.
I'm going to buy a microscope and look at the spots and let you know.

Apr 26 2007, 4:01 am

Thanks granny. Could it actually be the soil? It's got perlite for drainage in it and its only 3wks old. Its not a soiless mix either.
Its got warm castings, blood meal and other organic stuff in it. However, I dont know what the NPK actually is in the soil because the bag didnt say. I wish I could've used ProMix but no places have it. And I dont know how to mix my own soil either lol.
I might give it a shot though. Should I take it out of flowering? I started it 2days ago. I havent fertilized because I dont need to. Off the subject, when a plant is vegging, are the stems supposed to be smooth looking and green? Because my stem doesnt look
like that. It looks slightly rough and not "fresh" looking. Get back to me granny, thanks.

Newby! WAIT

Apr 25 2007, 6:57 pm

I looked and those brown/black spots might be a phosphorus deficiency. Stems turn purple, stunted growth, with smaller leaves turning blueish green with blotches. So, check what you're using to feed the plant that there is P in a good amount. PH should be at 5.5-6.5 for potting soil so the P is available to the plant. The superthrive may have made an excess of Zinc and iron, and that would also make the P unavailable.
Still, I worry about rot so you still have to get rid of the mold as that can cause necrosis (death) of the leaves as well.
Last, don't FIM this plant or prune it except to remove dead stuff until it recovers.

Apr 25 2007, 5:47 pm

I really can't get that close of a look on the plants leaves because the magnifying glass isn't that powerfull and I dont know
where to get a hand held 10x microscope lol. It trips me out that all the stains on the tops of the leaves occured in 1 day. Ive never grown before
so I dont know what signs to expect as far as for spider-mites. The spots look to be of a brown color and some are a bit darker than the rest.
The leaves arent a rich green color as Ive seen on pics, they're more towards the lighter green. This is a plant that was saved and given to me by my gf.
I cut the main stalk just above the lowest branch with new growth. The plant was growing and looking healthy for 3wks up until now. The stalk that is now growing
has a purplish color to it. and I did use SuperThrive the 1st couple of times I watered to ensure it doesnt die. I flushed it yesterday and watered with filtered water. Now I wonder, if I did use to much SuperThrive (which I doubt) it could cause nutrient lock up but then I would start seeing the results at the tips and not on the inner leaves, right? And today I picked up my container and saw about an inch of root hanging from the holes and it was kind of peach fuzzy with small white hairs.
Im just clueless as to wtf is going on lol. Granny, if you hear me, let me know what you think is going on or anyone else that could help me out. Thanks
