GANJI'S GROW JOURNAL -- Day 141

Sat, May 03, 2003 12:00 am

Checked on the soil conditions in the flowering chamber today. The pH is excellent at 6.5. Large leaves still yellowing some and growth has slowed a bit as well. Decided to mist with the leftover fertilizer mix to feed the leaves until the mix in the soil takes affect. At this point, the yellowing is on just a few plants and only on a couple big leaves. The plants in the flowering chamber are now well past the halfway point and have really depleted the soil. This is a good time to start supplementing and it may take a couple more applications, before they’re done. Foliar feeding is a good way to get instant results, but I wouldn’t do it too often and Ganji should rinse the plants with plain water after a couple days to wash away any residue. --MAX

Looks like the clones have perked up a bit. There are now three clones established and growing well, and three others that seem to have turned the corner. Took them all out to the sink and saturated those that still have a chance. Pulled up four that had finally dried up. Watered the mothers as well.

It seems Ganji’s soil mix just wasn’t as good this time around and the clones needed a chemical shot in the arm to get moving. It’s extremely important to start with a high quality soil mix when cloning. It’s got to be highly nutritious, very rich and absorbent, but also loose with good drainage. For now, it seems Ganji might get enough replacement clones to fill the flowering chamber again. He should be able to improve his cloning technique the next time around however. --MAX

Still no sign of sprouts from the Afghani seeds. Decided to dig them up carefully and see what was up. Bad news. The seed shells wouldn’t break open and release the tiny starter leafs. The stems had wilted and died. I guess the Afghani #1 is lost forever. No more seed stock.

That truly is bad news. It really sucks losing a favorite strain. Old seeds are much harder to sprout than fresh ones. As we’ve seen, it took several weeks of TLC to get just a few to sprout in cloth, and none made it through planting. The seed shells had hardened so much that they had a hard time breaking open and when they did the cotyledons couldn’t force their way out. Ganji will just have to plan a trip to Amsterdam and go get some more. I’m sure the breeders have improved the strain considerable in the last ten years. --MAX
