GANJI'S GROW JOURNAL -- Day 152

Tragedy in the cloning chamber. Left the lamp too close to the new clones and most of them have been burned and are wilting. Raised the lamp up a foot, watered, and misted. Also rotated the tubs to get the ones that were most affected out from underneath. Watered the mother plants today as well. They both look great. Already beginning to produce more cuttings, which is good since most of the clones I just took look like they’re going to die. The first few days of a new clone’s life are crucial. If conditions aren’t right, problems can develop quickly. The proximity of Ganji’s metal halide dried up the cuttings closest to it and wilted the rest. Some may make it, most won’t. Fresh cuttings are particularly susceptible to drying out under the intensity of HID lighting. Many growers use humidity domes to keep moisture levels up. Some prefer to clone under fluorescent lighting for the first few weeks to ease the new cuttings into rooting. Misting regularly is another way to cool the foliage and keep it supple. The immediate solution in Ganji’s case is to raise the lamp which he’s done, though he may need to consider these other options if his rate of success doesn’t improve dramatically. --MAX

Watered the flowering plants one last time today. They’re thick with resin and starting to topple over under their own weight again. Almost done. It’ll be 55 days at weeks end. The three transplants are all that’s ready to be put into the flowering room. Decided to take advantage of this unplanned break and do some maintenance and upgrading. Might as well begin to work the perpetual harvest as well.
If I put three new plants in every two weeks, I can have 12 plants in 4 different stages of flowering at all times. That will put them on a 56 day rotation. I can harvest three finished plants every two weeks. Should maximize the use of space in the flowering chamber and spread out the work some. Should also ease the cloning pressure. Instead of taking a large batch of clones once every 8 weeks, I’ll take several every week and keep only the best. The mothers are producing plenty and they might be easier to care for and maintain if they’re pruned regularly.

This is an excellent idea and well thought out as well. It’s been nearly six months since Ganji opened the Temple and it’s the perfect time to do a little maintenance. Ganji’s also decided to turn his bad luck with cloning into a chance to set up a perpetual harvest. He’s absolutely right on about the space issue and spreading out the work. He should also be able to increase the overall yield as well. Sixteen full-grown plants in the first crop were way too many. Nine in this one seemed to fit snuggly. Using the perpetual harvest, Ganji could easily fit twelve plants of different sizes into the flowering chamber. This will give him three more plants every 8 weeks and makes much better use of the space and lighting.
He’s also right on about the cloning as well. It should be much easier to maintain the mothers and produce sufficient clones for future flowering, even with Ganji’s apparent bad luck and poor success rate. Way to turn a negative into a positive! --MAX
