All You Need to Grow

Harvest!
When do I harvest? Everybody tells me to wait till it freezes, but I don’t know—maybe I should harvest sooner. I live in Tucson, AZ, and even though we are at a high elevation, it doesn’t freeze here until late October. What should I do?
Desert Owl

Dear Desert Owl,
Harvest when the plants are ready to harvest; pay attention to what your plants tell you. Unless a very bad storm is coming that would blow them over and beat them with raindrops, or unless an impending freeze is at hand, harvest your plants when they’re ready. There are five distinct types of plants that are ready at five different times. Use the information below as a guideline.

For example, Hash Plant, Afghani, Hindu Kush, etc., finish in mid- to late August. The yield and potency are high, and so is the fragrance! When nurtured by an experienced grower, these strains are thick with resin. They grow best with lots of intense sunlight and water from below, not from above (i.e., rain). Use a 30x microscope to see if the resin glands are well-formed, with a knob on top of a small post. Harvest before half of the glands start to deteriorate, and keep an eye out for mold.

Early Pearl, Early Queen, Early Riser, Manitoba Poison and similar strains finish in early September at your latitude of 34°N. They are potent and yield a little better than the plants in the first group, and they’re all easy to grow.

Mighty Mite, Durban Poison and Jack Herer finish in mid- to late September. The yield and potency are very good, and the odor is not too intense. These strains grow a huge, dominant main cola with several large terminal buds on the main branches. You should also check these plants for peak ripeness with a 30x microscope.

Blueberry, White Widow, White Rhino, Super Silver Haze and Pure Power Plant tend to finish in mid- to late October. The yields and potency are very high! They don’t have an intense fragrance while growing, but that changes quickly when they are cut! Mold can be a problem with them.

Skunk #1, Northern Lights #5, Big Bud, and pure or nearly pure sativas finish from late October to early November. Sometimes sativas don’t finish at all if the weather cools too much and snow comes. Potency is superb in all of the plants in this category except for Big Bud. All of them grow tall—often to 15 feet—and are generally tolerant of cold.

Northern California season is unrivaled. Within a historical valley flood plane with easily accessible water (preferably a water table about six to ten ft below ground level) its so easy you'll be wondering why you haven't been. This place could be your backyard and should be. We all should be growing what we smoke. It is a very ceremonious process a gift of grace. I've had many of go arounds in many scenes with many characters some have been fruitfully gratifying others heartbreaking and unsettling. I can tell you that every disappointment was a result of my fellow man and his insatiable greed and unthankfulness for what the earth provides. Associating $$ with a garden will strike you down every time. Greed and haughtiness can conquer life long friendships and corrupt even a good man. We all have at one time have smoked weed that was so good. It was provided to a person humble and grateful and satisfied with what was harvested.

High there, Mr. Cervantes, oh wise-man of the Holy Herb. A trip to Home Depot lead me to an idea to grow with what they have to work with. I used Miracle Grow African Violet Potting Soil and Schultz Liquid Cactus Food 2-7-7 for my flowering stage-( it has micro-nutrients as well),. I use eggshell tea toward the end of the veggi cycle. Eggshell Tea is what I call; Ghettto-Guano and it's made by packing a glass, 1 gallon water jug with fresh eggshells and fill it the rest of the way with fresh bottled water and let it rest for a week or 2.. Phew! Stinky-stinky. My plants love this stuff and it also works as a recovery agent when your plant is weak. Could you find out, through analysis, how this compares to guano chemically? I triple the dosage for the cactus food and 2-7-7 is the best I've found so far. I use Home Depot's compact fluorescence lights(65 & 100 watts) and pots. My grows are good and I spend less than $25 for 1 to 4 plants. The buds came out sweet and strong. The first plant was North American Skunk-NAS, and the second was bubble gum. I grow a great skunk-kush that was very strong. Now I have master kush from a clone I bought from a medical marijuana clinic here in LA and the original plant was wonderful with 1.5 ounces in a 2 gallon pot. I took 2 cuttings and they are starting to flower and yes, I took 2 cuttings that have just finished rooting in Home Depot's Peat Disks. I have all your books and dvd's and I love them and thank you. i have pix on Myspace, just look for ogkushte.

hey, i'm trying to grow in a very confined space

the dimensions of the space are about 2 feet tall x 4 feet long x 2 ft wide

i'm just trying to get the plants started and very healthy then move them to a larger space where they can have more room...

the plants were extremely healthy for the first two-three weeks but suddenly they seemed to have haulted.

I pulled one of the plants out and the root system is poop....

i'm using distilled water for watering and i also used some miracle gro plant food during the third week...

what do you think is causing them to stop growing and preventing the root system to take off and grow healthily?

Dfresh,
Growing outside has two and only two major advantages over inside growing, 1) enormous amounts of light from the sun, and 2) it's all free. For all other facets of growing ( e.g., water, light, pests, temperature, nutrients, soil quality, time of flowering , etc. ) you will be much better served by an inside operation because you can exercise as much control as you like over the plant's environment. The security of an inside grow is also far better than sticking it in the ground outside for all the world to see.
Regarding seed gender, if anyone has ever discovered a way to distinguish between male and female seeds, I've never heard of it. Sorry.

Don julio... is the strain youre growing a really good one??.. if so id be tempted to let the seeds mature.. seeds take around 6-8 weeks to reach maturation.. and of course you can always has the buds once youve picked the seeds out.. would save buying more and more seeds at rediculas prices.. and seeds will keep for around 5-10 years in a dry cool space..

of course its upto you.. and if youve cloned that male .. then yes the clones will be male too.. what id be tempted to do is to grow a male clone out and collect the pollen for future crosses.. male pollen will keep for almost ever in the fridge.. of course if its a real good strain youre growing.. the male pollen could be a god send for later grows, as you only need to paint the pollen onto the bud where you choose.. this way it wont seed the whole crop.. just where you applied the pollen..

lucky me... id be opting for a 12on 12 off light cycle.. resin production is at its highest at 12/12.. also id be opting for a HID lamp.. depending on the size of the room.. a 400watt will do a space of 3'x3'.. a 600 will do a space of 4'x4'.. this is what i use.. a 1000watt will do space of 5'x5'.. upto 6'x6'.. with plenty of luminal output per foot squared to grow decent solid buds

SukonmiSkunk

Oct 20 2007, 6:51 pm

jon.. a good scrog grow you should be aiming for around 2 ounces per foot squared... thats about average.. of course that all depends on the style and strain youre growing.. I grow in a recirculated hydroponics system.. 1 plant will fill a space of around 2footX2foot... all up around 4 foot squared.. i get around the 2 ounces per foot.. so each plant gets around 6-8 ounces... obviously this is a rough guide.. yields will depend on experience, strain and the system youre using...but hey, even at 1 ounce per foot.. youll be doing alright... some growers who grow an SOG style can yield upto 4 ounces per foot.. of course SOG style youll need a lot more plants than a scrog grow..

My outdoor babies got discovered recently by perps who stripped a few immature but potent buds. Nervous about the po po and returning perps, I dug up my babies trying hard not to damage roots, but a little damage could not be avoided. I placed them in large containers, and stashed them in a make shift grow room with only 4ft dbl neon grow lights. I know this was a terrible thing to do but I had no choice. I have timer set for 10hr on 14 off to try to speed up maturation. Anyone have recommendations

Ace,
The qualitative difference between the plants is that the females will get you stoned, whle the males will usually only give a mild buzz.
