All You Need to Grow
Thu, Oct 18, 2007 12:45 pm
I have been growing outdoors now for about five years, but I keep cuttings from my plants indoors in the winter. I want to start a small growroom indoors and switch from dirt to hydro. What system would be the best for me? I bought a clone machine that suspends the cuttings in a neoprene disk. Once they root, how do I put them in the garden? I only have two types of plants, Diesel and Kush. Which one will thrive better indoors with hydro?
John
Dear John,
A small growroom is an excellent idea. The hydroponic system you choose will really depend upon your needs and space. First, you need to determine the growroom’s size and how many watts of light will be used. For example, if you are able to section off two separate areas in your growroom—a vegetative room for mothers, clones and vegetative plants, and a flowering room—the veg room will need a 250- to 400-watt metal halide (MH) lamp that will be on for 18 to 24 hours a day, and the flowering room will need one or two 400- to 600-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps that will be on 12 hours and off 12 hours. The veg room should be about a quarter of the size of the flowering room. A good system for this two-room setup will allow you to move plants independently from one room to the other. Hydroponic systems that give you this option have individual pots. One of my favorite systems is a 40-by-40-inch tray filled with deep, square 3-gallon containers full of Peatlite soilless mix. You can set up an overhead automatic irrigation system or water by hand. If you can place the growing bed 12 to 24 inches above the floor, you can easily drain the runoff into a bucket. This system is very simple and easy to set up and maintain. There are many variations to this system that use expanded clay pellets, rockwool and other mediums.
Moving bare-root clones into Peatlite is simple. Remove the clone carefully from the neoprene ring and gently spread out the roots in a pre-made hole in the moist medium. Gently backfill the hole and be sure that the roots are buried. Bury the clone up to about an inch from the first set of leaves. Water the container heavily and give clones filtered light until they recover from the trauma.
MEXICO
I was just reading your articles about Mexico in HIGH TIMES, and wow—you are the luckiest guy ever to travel to all of these great places! Anyway, at one point you wrote that one of El Jefe’s biggest problems was keeping his workers in line. I used to run a crew similar to that, and let me tell you, it’s not that easy, but it can be done. I left that position and have been solo for a while. But I’ve been looking for the rush and excitement again. Did El Jefe mention anything about needing a supervisor for his staff or new staff in general? I know my shit, so no worries there! I look forward to hearing from you.
Herb
Dear Herb,
Mexico is a tough place; the narcotraficantes play for keeps. Even though firearms were not allowed on the first farm, they linger in the background. As violence increases in other parts of Mexico, pistoleros (hired guns) are migrating to greener pastures with easier pickings. Everybody was armed and dangerous on the second farm. All the people I met there had lost loved ones to violence. Many of them have killed and have a price on their heads. They are prone to use force to settle all scores. As the pressure increases and the black-market profits continue to stay strong, the violence will continue. Mexico was described as “the world’s second-deadliest country for journalists after Iraq,” and narcotraficantes are more prone to fall victim to violence than reporters. More than 2,000 drug gang deaths were reported in 2006.
Good luck with your desire to feel the “rush and excitement again.” Just remember that you are putting your life on the line for a few thrills. My function is to report news and take pictures and write about cultivating cannabis, nothing more.
BAG SEED, BOYS & GIRLS
About two months ago, I found a seed in the weed I bought. I planted it and it is growing, but not very fast. It is on my balcony on the 18th floor and gets about seven hours of light a day. Will it bud with that kind of light? How do I tell if it’s a male or female? Should I give it fertilizer? If so, what kind?
Ester
Dear Ester,
Bag seed is often quite good, although quite inconsistent—some seeds grow into great plants, and others are disappointing at best. Growing a single plant, the odds are against you, because your chances are 50/50 that the plant will be male. Couple that with spotty genetics and the chances of a great plant diminish. If you have more seeds, germinate and plant them to improve your luck.
You should be able to distinguish male from female plants now. At about two months, plants grow pre-flowers that are either male or female. The pre-flowers are located at the fourth to fifth leaf/branch nodes from the top of the plant. Female pre-flowers appear as two small, white, hairlike “pistils” that protrude from a miniature seedpod. Male pre-flowers appear as nubs that later turn into small pollen sacs. You may need to examine plants with a 10x magnifying glass to make a positive identification.
Full sun through a window for seven hours daily should be enough to grow a decent harvest, provided the plant stays healthy. Cannabis is daylight-sensitive and blooms when it receives 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness and 12 hours of light daily. My guess is that your plant receives more than 12 hours of light daily. Induce flowering in your two-month-old plant by putting it in the dark for 12 hours a day. Remember to give it 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light every day. It will show outward signs of flowering in two weeks.

Don't worry about the white deposits on the pots. This is mineral build-up from the water seeping though the porous clay and should pose no problem at all for a one-time use.

For nutrients, I use a mixture of blood meal ( I mix it in with the potting soil ), Miracle-Gro, Vitamin B-1 ( which stimulates rapid root growth ) and epsom salts ( which provides magnesium, something not supplied by the Miracle-Gro ).
I know that there are many growers which like to micro-manage every aspect of plant growth, but I am not numbered among them. I like to grow my own MJ, but dislike investing excessive amounts of time and intensity on it and my experience is that doing so is not required in order to grow large amounts of kickass smoke. I simply provide the necessities ( moisture, nutrients, growing medium ( potting soil ), light, warmth and air ( although MJ is very tolerant of stuffy conditions ) and let the plants grow as they will and they are always happy with this arrangement.

Here's an alternative method you might try. It's the method I use to germinate and its never failed yet to give me great results.
Get one of those metal Altoid cans, punch some holes in the bottom and fill it to the rim with potting soil. Using a pencil, make a hole in the dirt, drop in a seed and cover it with soil. Continue in this manner until you are satisfied with the number of seeds in the container ( I usually wind up with about 18-20 covered seeds per can. ). Now, using a sprayer, completely saturate the soil and drain off any excess water. Let the container sit until the very top of the soil is dry and then saturate again. Continue doing this until germination which should be in a few days. When the sprouts break the surface, transplant. The roots will be very long, about 1"-2".
