All You Need to Grow

I have your Bible and first DVD, but what nutrients do you recommend? What are the nutrients and supplements that are must-haves, in your opinion, in order to provide top-notch harvests?
Catica
Via Internet
Dear Catica,
There are more nutrients on the market than I can name, and many of them will suit your plants’ needs. Look for the “Guaranteed Analysis” on the fertilizer package and make sure that it contains all necessary macro- and micro-nutrients: nitrogen (N), potassium (P), phosphorus (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), boron (B), copper (Cu) and molybdenum (Mb).
Chemical-based fertilizers are a mix of mineral salts. Organic fertilizers contain the same elements as chemical-based fertilizers but in an organic form, meaning they have not been chemically altered. There are different purities and grades of ingredients. Premium fertilizers (organic or chemical) are your best choice, because they use high-quality food-grade ingredients and can guarantee the contents. Stay away from fertilizers that cannot guarantee that they contain all of the nutrients listed above.
The raw water you use will also make quite a difference regarding fertilizers. If the water contains more than 50 ppm (parts per million) sodium, or if the overall content of dissolved solids is above 300 ppm, you will have to treat it with reverse osmosis to remove the dissolved solids, most of which are mineral salts. These impurities will alter the content of the nutrients that your plants receive, most often in a negative way.
Go to your local hydroponic shop or garden center and ask the smartest person you can find there what kind of fertilizer to use for vegetative and flowering/fruiting vegetables. Buy the best (i.e., premium) fertilizer recommended that meets the above qualifications.
My favorite supplement is a PK 13/14 that is added during flowering. Canna was the first company to market it; many others now sell a similar product. You may also want to add bat guano during flowering, but be careful not to overfeed. Check with the manufacturer for application instructions.
You can check several Web sites that have great fertilizers for sale for more recommendations: generalhydroponics.com, canna.com, atami.com and hesi.nl.
Wilted Women!
I am having a growing problem. I left my room dark for 36 hours before my plants went into bloom, but when I turned on the lights, half of them were drooping severely. Can you tell me why?
Rod
Via Internet
Dear Rod,
Normally, growers leave their plants in the dark at the end of the flowering cycle. But I doubt the reason that your plants were severely wilted had anything to do with the lights being off for 36 hours. Plants wilt quickly for a variety of reasons. The first is a lack of water or fluids, which can be caused by under-watering or by a blockage in the fluid-transportation system within the plant. The system could be blocked by the spread of a disease, such as fusarium wilt, or by a burrowing insect. In severe cases of excessive fertilizer-salt buildup in the soil, water uptake is restricted.
Less likely, if your plants suffered temperature or humidity shock during their time in the dark, they might show stress by wilting.
First, check the soil and give your plants water if they need it. Wash the excess salts from the soil with a heavy flushing with good water. Pour in three times the volume of water as the volume of soil. If that doesn’t work, check the plants for fusarium wilt by cutting open a stem to inspect the inside. If fusarium wilt is evident, remove and destroy all affected plants and use bleach to wash down the entire room to keep the disease from spreading. If you’re lucky, it will not spread to adjacent plants.
