All You Need to Grow
Thu, Feb 21, 2008 1:48 pm
I run a grow operation for a compassion clinic. Recently, I planted six germinated seeds and threw them in the dark, but they did not come up. Then I put them under two small desk-lamp fluorescents. It is Day 4 and no seeds have come up yet. Is there a problem with my setup? I’ve been using 24 hours of light a day, and the garden is bordered with Mylar. It gets pretty hot in there. The lights are providing warmth and lumens. Also, I found a small worm about a millimeter long and removed it.
T.
Via Internet
Dear T.,
Germinated seeds are very delicate and should be “placed” in the dark rather than “thrown.” Your choice of language indicates rough handling of the germinated seed. You also say that it “gets pretty hot,” but you don’t say how hot. The ideal atmospheric temperature range for germinating seed is 78ºF to 80ºF. Keep the soil a few degrees warmer to speed root development—but if it gets much hotter, growth is impaired. Most importantly, a hot environment will dry out the soil and the new tender roots. The roots must remain moist at all times; if they dry out, growth will be stunted. As the moisture dissipates, the severity of the problem progresses, growth stops altogether and finally death occurs. Keep the surface of the soil or growing medium evenly moist until the germinated seed has broken through the soil surface and grown for a week. The first two weeks of growth are the most critical, because seedlings have a small, delicate, developing root system and must receive proper moisture.
If the worm you removed ate any part of the seeds, you will find evidence in the form of physical damage to the germinated seed. If the seed is affected or dead, you must replant. This time, use store-bought soil that is guaranteed to be “sterile” and you should have no problems with little worms.
Ladybird Beetles
Is it true that you can put ladybugs in your growroom and they will keep spider mites and other pests away?
T.S.T.
Via Internet
Dear T.S.T.,
No. In the United States, most ladybird beetles (ladybugs) are collected in California in the Sierra Mountains. The ladybugs are hibernating and full of fat (stored food) when they’re collected, and they are refrigerated to keep them in a state of low metabolism. When they’re released, the ladybugs warm up and start looking for a mate; food is the last thing on their mind at this time. Once they mate and lay eggs, young larvae hatch out. The larvae that cannot fly have a ravenous appetite, and their favorite food is aphids. Seldom do they eat spider mites.
If you introduce 100 ladybugs into your growroom on Monday, there will be only a few left by Friday. Most of them will be ready to look for a mate and will take off toward the “sun”— which is actually a high-intensity discharge (HID) light. They’ll fly straight into the hot lamp and pop like popcorn!
Roots
If you plant in a short, deep, wide and long container (4” x 18” x 8”), will the roots grow healthy? I know if you plant in a 5-gallon pot, the roots grow down, but in this case would they make their way across the container?
J.R.
Via Internet
Dear J.R.,
Four inches is not very deep. This shallow pot could hold only 3 to 3.5 inches of soil. Cannabis generally throws deep anchoring roots that also bring minerals up from the soil to the plant. These roots generally circle the bottom and sides of the container. Small feeder roots are located near the growing tip of such roots. Other roots filled with fine feeder roots also grow from the subterranean stem. The problem you will have with such a short pot is that it will fill with roots quickly. And since the container is so shallow, it will dry out quickly, which will make keeping it moist a constant problem. You will have to use an automatic watering system or water by hand once or twice a day to ensure that your plants receive adequate water. You could also put a tray under the container, then water the container and let the excess drain into the tray. The plant should use all the water in the tray in a day or so. However, don’t let the water stand in the tray for more than one and a half to two days or you’ll create the ideal conditions for root rot.
Hot Grow
I have a grow space that is 6 by 7 feet, and I use a 400-watt, 600-watt and 1,000-watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) light for flowering. The 600-watt was added recently, and I’ve been experiencing yellowing and a drop-off of fan leaves ever since. Could this be caused by too much light in my grow space? What would be the best spacing for the reflectors?
Matt
Via Internet
Dear Matt,
You added light and heat when you added the 600-watt lamp. Natural sunlight provides much more light than most plants need to grow, and plants like cannabis grow well under very intense sunlight. You have 2,000 watts of HID light in a 420-square-foot room. That doesn’t appear to be too much light. But did you add more ventilation or increase the air circulation to allow for the added heat from the 600-watt lamp? The lamp and the ballast both radiate heat: Did you put the ballast outside the growroom?
You should always remember that heat comes along with light. When the light shines on the surface of a leaf, the temperature inside the leaf is about 10ºF higher than the exterior surface. Such extra heat taxes the plant’s cooling system; hot leaves require more moisture so they can stay cool. Plants draw in more irrigation water and dissipate it through their leaves when they transpire. When plants are too hot and can’t stay cool enough via transpiration, they generally start losing their lower leaves. You can see the same thing outdoors during dry years: Trees start shedding their lower leaves.
Buy an inexpensive light meter and measure the light in your room just above plants. Hang the lamps so that you distribute the light as evenly as possible.

I have had trouble with these little suckers for years & managed to get them sort of under control with neem oil spraying once every couple weeks, But I recently used a product to get rid of fungus gnats containing "imidacloprid" from Bromide "Systemic houseplant insect control."
imidacloprid is a synthetic nicotinyl and appears to be of low toxicity from the research I've done.
Your sprinkle it into the soil in the top inch or so after a month I cant find any mite eggs at all on any of the plant including the lower leaves, it does enter into the plant itself so it may effect the end product to some extent but with moderate use I cant imagine it would be a problem.

Low stress train the plants by tying them down using coat hanger staples, this will hide the plants better and give you a much bigger yield.
In veg use Blood meal, and switch to bone meal in flower.
best of luck!

HOWEVER it appears that I cant cure for shit. No matter what I do the finished product tastes horrible and smells like hay or grass lawn clippingg and show NONE of the incredible smell that the plants profused. Its a real bummer, man. Here are the steps I take. I chop the lady, trim off all the leaf while it is wet and freshly chopped. I then hang these trees in a well ventialated cardboard box for a week to ten days. I open the box regularly for even more air flow. I then trim all the buds from the stems and allow them to continue to dry on trays for several days. Then I place them in mason jars which I open regularly to let the air flow. This is my 3 or 4th grow and I cant shake this problem. HELP me PLEASE save my buds!

A 1000watter is perfect for a 4x4 area. Now that you have changed from organic (in soil) to hydro your going to notice that the plants are going to grow quite a bit faster than before! Depending on how you want to grow in that area I would say a sea of green setup would give you the most pot. So budding them at 12" is too big!! I would say about 10cm and I would put 20 plants under that 1000watthps. You said heat isn't an issue so sounds like a nice little setup! If heat does become an issue, I would get an aircooled shade with a inline fan and vent it out side through a dryer vent or chimney etc... 75 to 80 Degree's is perfect any hotter and you will have problems along with a big loss in bud. So thats about it. Happy Growing!!!

I have a seperate "bloom room" using a 1000 watt HPS and we are about to start our hydro system, either a 4'x4' or a 3'x3' ebb and flow tray.. will a single 1000 watt HPS be sufficient for a 4'x4'? and if so, how many plans can i grow in ha area. We have no hea issues and we currenly clone, so our move o a full hydro sysem kicks off in a monh or so (our curren harvest is in organic soil)... I plan o move he young ladies out of veg hydro and into bloom hydro when hey are about 12" tall...
hanks Jorge, we really enjoy all your postings...
