TURN KEY GROW BOXES FOR DUMMIES

A Beginner's Guide

Tue, Nov 27, 2007 12:48 pm

-

By Nico Escondido

I hate to admit it, but the tides are turning. In fact, they have turned and there’s no denying it anymore. I remember my first growroom system (circa 1995) was homemade and featured a large Utz pretzel barrel as my hydroponic reservoir. For years afterward, I still preached the good word of handcrafted systems, using inverted Coca-Cola bottles as grow pods and hanging (eek) 100-watt halogens over sprouted bag seeds of Mexi mid-grade…. We have come so far.

These days, to be honest, there is little reason not to take a long, hard look at some of the prefabricated systems currently available in the marketplace. With prices manageable enough that after a harvest or two these systems pay for themselves, anyone from college students to home hobbyists can afford small to midsized grow boxes that come complete with everything a novice gardener would need to produce a little homegrown nugget.

Out-of-the-Box
Turnkey systems that are out there today are no longer only for small stash growing. Potent, high-yielding cannabis crops are easily attainable in grow boxes that come complete with miniature hydroponic systems, high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps and even feature CO2 injector kits and air filtration systems. With better technology and cheaper material costs, more and more manufacturers are finding ways to fit everything a complete grow op would need into smaller packages that make for much better use of space and resources.

Made to fit snugly into closets or disguised to look like mini-refrigerators, grow boxes can be used hydroponically or with soil. Grow chambers can range from 2’ x 2’ to 4’ x 6’ and come in a variety of heights with varying facades. Some systems have completely automated controls for atmosphere, lighting and feeding systems and most can be modified to customer specifications before ordering—or amended by growers themselves after-market. This is good news because with more possibilities comes more opportunity for grows that are well suited for your specific conditions.

Even Better
Even better is the fact that these small grow boxes have literally revolutionized the way small-time growers approach their grow strategy. Resigned to seed-only germinations because of lack of space for mother rooms and nurseries, home growers now have a viable method for growing clone-only strains and utilizing sea-of-green (SOG) systems.

An excellent example of this is the marketing approach used by BC Northern Lights, aptly naming their Mothership grow box for exclusive cultivation of mother plants that can be used to populate entire growrooms with cuttings. Of course, grow boxes like the Mothership can be used for complete, two-phase grow cycles. In fact, most European countries use grow boxes for both vegetative and flowering phases where personal use is the primary objective (the Mothership sells by the another name across the pond—the Roommate). Some grow boxes are actually double boxes that use a dividing wall to create two grow chambers. One chamber uses an 18-hour photoperiod for vegging, while the other side runs a 12-12 schedule for budding.

Grow boxes compact enough to take up as much space as a bedroom dresser can hold up to five mother plants, enough to easily supply 50 to 75 clones. Also, consider these smaller grow boxes can act as a “genetics bank” for your favorite strains as you come across them. If you’re keeping four or five moms, there’s no rule that says they must be related. As they say, variety can be the spice of life.

Security and Power Efficiency
As always, we have some added bonuses to share. Consider now security. How does a home grower or dormitory resident hide a personal grow op? How might a closet grower conceal his power consumption? These are the questions many first-time growers ask before even deciding on how or what to grow.

to homegrown-hydroponics,
Thank you for updating your post. Your company does indeed now have a B+ with the South Florida Better Business Bureau. Let me say that this is a step in the right direction. But it should be considered only a start.

I truly had a terrible experience, the worst online experience I've ever had, with your company. But since you are making attempts to improve your track record, I think you should credited for it.

If you want a grow box, I bought mine from www.Dealzer.com - they seem to be a nice center for all of this.

homegrown hydroponics beware

Nov 11 2009, 1:19 am

they ripped me off. the guy who runs the place was awful to deal with. As you can see below he's trying to defend the terrible customer service track record on message boards rather than with the customers he had and lost.

He sent me broken parts and wouldn't ship me replacement parts. He refused to replace items that showed up shattered.

Part of his poor customer service includes refusing to take your calls or return emails.

I'm still looking for one positive review about this company that doesn't appear to be an inside job from the company owner.

Oct 29 2009, 9:14 pm

wow, this is the most useless, uninformative thread possible.
If you haven't bought a turnkey system, why post??

I've seen nothing but questions with no answers.

SOooooo, I've decided to order the dealzer super file myself.

If I'm not too busy messin with it when it arrives, I will give a full review so at least SOMEONE will have an informed description.

As for you ALLEGED grow box employees, there is no room for you in a thread like this.

So Be gone!!!!

good day

Marten and Rick: (posted Aug 22 2009, 3:35 am and Aug 22 2009, 3:41 am) Two negative and false comments about our company 6 minutes apart at 3:41 AM?! Could it be possible that you are the same person who posted twice?! Are you a competitor or a customer? Steal your money?! We have a B+ BBB rating and High Times as presented us with numerous awards for our products. Look at the back issues and see for your self. What proof do you have to accuse a hard working individual like Howard of stealing your money?! Don't lie! Did he steal your money?! What's your order number and name?! We'll post your tracking number right here for the world to see. That is if you are even a customer of ours. You are hiding behind anonymous made up names and making untrue claims. That's called slander. If you really want to make these types of claims on High Times open forum then present some real proof to backup your claims and we will do the same! We work hard and make a quality product sold at a reasonable price. Your accusations are false. We have sold thousands of grow boxes and have a good BBB rating to back it up. We do not appreciate anonymous claims being made with no proof or eveidence offered at all backup your claim. Don't believe everything you read. Especially when it's anonymous!! For those interested our web site can be found at http://www.homegrown-hydroponics.com.

marc: So you are claiming that our grow boxes are smaller that the ad you have in High Times?! The smallest unit we make is much bigger than the magazine :) All the dimensions for our products are on our web site through the videos, or available by just calling and asking the dimensions. Why would you say the BCNL is a better unit? Because you work for them? Does the Bloombox top off water levels and adjust the pH levels like our machines? Better how? It has less fans, less light, less electronics and less options. See for yourself!!

Recently, I started attempting to grow. But, with lack of knowledge, out of 40 starter sprouts, there is just a few living. either they would dye, and wouldnt have any roots on them, to too much fert. leaf tips burning.
Is there some info about gender recognizing, how tall, correct fert., etc... for some body that doesnt have the financial backing as some do.
Can Somebody help?

A magazine article should offer ideas as to the quality of specific products. All the people who say you can do it cheaper yourself don't understand that when you make decent money for a living your time is expensive so yeah your homemade box cost $200 to $400 but you put in how many hours gathering and building? If you value your time at anything above a $100 an hour, it is cheaper to buy a ready made. does anyone have information other than its cheaper to do it yourself?

put the smaller plants in the middle 1st off then tie the plants down a bit or if u can put a glass cover under the light ,dont do it unless it has a place 4 1 though.that should solve the problem good luck

I have a unite that I bought and so far it works like a charm. The one thing I'm having trouble is,that the plants in the middle are getting burned. How can I make them grow bushy and not tall?so there not burning the leaves?

Discount Hydroponic Systems

Apr 9 2009, 2:23 pm

Hydroponic systems are a must to the avid grower, especially in a bad economy. If you want to turn huge profits, you should have a hydroponic system. Also, you want to buy your hydroponic system from a reputable dealer and make sure you are getting the lowest price on your grow box. Here is a link to the highest quality/lowest priced grow boxes online:

1. Browserman, are you saying you don't want business owners who know their seeds inside and out to write articles and posts giving away valuable info tidbits for FREE just because at the end we discreetly add our URL?

*sigh* I had this run-in with a bunch of knuckleheaded-knife-makers on one of their boards, too.

Here's the thing--spam is a form of ILLEGAL marketing ("spam" has a very specific legal meaning and is currently illegal under US federal law.)

However, the vast majority of marketing is NOT spam...and I'd think anyone who wants info on anything would be happy to free bits of useful info given our by business owners in exchange for one discreet plug.

I use such things myself to promote my new book.

Oh, and the premise about "no grow box is worth $1,000" is fatally flawed--you're assuming no one's TIME could more profitably spent doing their work than assembling a grow box.

WRONG! I do marketing consulting. My rate is $150/hour. No, I don't want to blow two days Home Depot'ing this and Lowe's-ing that. Not when I can make $2,400 when I spend those 2 days ($2,400 = 16 hours x $150/hr) working!

It's actually cheaper for me to buy a mini-caddy.

Don't feel bad, most people don't get it about the value of their TIME. They piss it away.

I'm guessing the person who said it's not worth $1,000 when you can do it yourself is either self-employed, or an employee, or unemployed. He/she is clearly not a business owner or investor. :)

yeah, guys for those of you that didn't get much out of that, you basicly won't find all yer info in one place, i know a good share on hydroponics, and its taken me about 5 years of trial and error and research,,,, one thing i've found though,,,, most of these gimmicks are junk, and require you moding it to make it work,,,, i've yet to see the northerlights systems, they seem legit,,,,and i'm still trying to distiguish if homegrown hydro is a gimmick...... happy hunting

hey, you can even use a old fridge, in most all it is is just styrofoam between the freezer and fridge, just cut it out mount a light that you can raise and lower, cut a hole closer to the bottom and one near the top. trust me it works pretty pro! ;P

Listen. Its like alot of people are saying here - you CAN buy prefabbed boxes and be happy and ready to go, but buying the parts and fabbing yourself is way cheaper, and probably alot higher quality. the fuckin cool cab is 1999 and even the mini is almost 1500 bucks. Thats fuckin rediculous. You can go and buy your own filing cabinet for 50 bucks at home depot, get the mylar, the cooling fans, air filters, bulbs, nutes, hydro system, and power converter unit all from websites and home depot, and you will still end up wayyyy under 1000 bucks. Its insane what people will charge nowadays just because they see a bunch of stoner kids freakin out cuz they wanna grow their own but dont want mommy n daddy to find out what their doing. IF YOU LIVE WITH YOUR PARENTS YOUR NOT RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO GROW CHRONIC IN THE FIRST PLACE. MOVE OUT, THEN GROW. AFTER you move however, invest in a space like 6'x5'x6' and get a nice compact hydro system if you know what your doing, and get the hell on with business. N i would also recommend that you start out in soil, because its cheap, and you can get a feel for what a plant likes to do in its growing cycle. Also, as far as seeds go, use bagseed the first couple times you grow. Brand name strains are expensive, and if you dont know what your doing you could easily kill your plants and waste well over 100 bucks for 10 seeds. Good luck with your grow ops.

The post a couple ago, about the canadian one, in capitals, is a fake post by the actual sellers of that unit, thats why its name is capitalized for better ranking on Google. It is sad, that even on this high quality and laid back forum, is dominated by those wanting to sell us their wares, and act like they are actually giving sound advice.

May 4 2008, 9:52 pm

I think the best growboxes have both blue, and red light all the time like the new one from Low Grow Eco. It seems like the best deal by far? why is it so cheap?

Apr 10 2008, 12:18 am

Why buy a turnkey kit, when, with a little imagination and for FAR less money, you can build your own stealthy unit? Home Depot sells nice sturdy wardrobe closets for $109. Two sides, one is full length for tall plants and the other side has adjustable shelves, for seedlings and younger plants. Drill some holes, run a few wires and pop in some lighting and ventilation, and presto.. Your own Do-It-Yourself grow cabinet. All for a few hundred bucks!

I have purchased the mini cool cab, from sunlightsheds.com. I drove to the storeover 4 hours. The unit was nice lookng, the staff was rude, unhelpful, any bashed the owner and product. Rough crowd of guys. Well still got the unit. When set up the light did not work, company overnighted me a new balist no questions asked. Got it running to find the water pump did not pump water, cloged with hot glue, the back up resivor, leaked at the fitting going into main resivor, had to purchase part at hd., the odor filter looks a lil home made. after getting home and repairing i found that you can purchase all pices minus light and nuits. at home depot, and office max for under 500 bucks. Unit does work well after i fixed it. I still dont belive it is worth nearly 1400. Save your money build your own, It seems like a really good deal, but you can spend the same amount for a lot nicer system using higher quality parts. The unit does work well but be ready for poor quaility of craftminship.

I agree with Rico. There are so many grow boxes out there. Nico, How about an idea of witch system you think is the best over all. Price, yield and energy consumption.(Not the vertical systems) That is what the article should really be covering. I buy High Times to take out the guess work. So please help us all to find a box that will be perfect for the avg. home cultivator.

The best "turn-key" grow houses are manufactured by sunlightsheds.com. I have the PC Planter and Cool Cab myself. The PC Planter is great for a dorm room and even comes with a load of accessories, including a spray that inhibits the height growth of your plants, making them grow denser and wider rather than up. The Cool Cab is great for my full grown plants and allows for up to 14 plants and is developed to reject infrared camera detection to keep away those pesky DEA agents. I highly recommend this site for it's grow houses. I've yielded about 10lbs in one year on the Cool Cab alone.
