From Purple Urkel to Grape Ape to Lavender, violet-colored cannabis varieties have piqued the interest of many ganja growers in the last several years. American seed breeder Subcool investigates the facts and the myths about cannabis strains that naturally turn purple as they mature.

Purple Urkel is a clone-only strain that seems to be the rage among medical clubs and cannabis connoisseurs. Danny Danko asked me to do some research on the popular strain and report on our current project using an Urkel clone mother. Purple Urkel is known for growing somewhat slowly, but its other traits make it very desirable. It turns an amazing purple late in bloom, possesses the most amazing grape/lavender flavor and gives a nice strong stone. But where did it come from?

Purple Urkel or Humboldt Purple (a.k.a. Purple Urple) has been growing in southern Humboldt County since approximately 1989. The Mendo cats are responsible for renaming it “Lavender,” among several other names. A good friend, White Trash Redneck, has grown the Mendocino Lavender cut side by side with the Humboldt Purple Urple/Urkel—as well as the Bridgeville Black Afghan, Nepalese Purple, Pakistani Purple Kush and Tooty Fruity Purple—and he swears they’re all the same cut, renamed.

White Trash Redneck also went on to tell me that the Humboldt Purple cut seems to be an old-school IBL, or Inbred Line, making it ideal for use in breeding projects. He’s bred more than 20 Urkel hybrids and has been impressed with all of them. I’ve discovered quite a few other Purples that are likely the same cut as well, going by such names as Garberville Purple Kush (a.k.a. Swerve’s Cut), Mendocino PK and Kyle Kushman’s PK. An Internet source I’ll leave unnamed says about Kyle’s PK:

Kyle Kushman’s “Purple Kush” is the plant that made Kushman famous after a photograph of the Kush made the cover of the New York Times Magazine about 12 years ago.The magazine is not a weed-centric publication, and the article stated how much real money is made by indoor gardening based on black-market forces and the technology that was in place then (grow lights, seeds, hydro systems, etc). In the article the grower (presumably Kyle) states that the plant was found in a group of Northern Lights x Purple Indica seeds. Kyle was living out east at the time and soon became a writer for HIGH TIMES.

I would assume that the Mendocino and Garberville versions are the exact same, as this is prime herb-growing country here in North Cali, and it would be really easy for one grower to give a clone to another fellow grower. The Emerald Triangle (Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity Counties) is known for the quantity of MJ it produces, both indoor and outdoor.

purps r over-rated! If you use ice to flush your plants a few weeks before harvest it cools the root system and will make any green plant purple. There are naturally purple plants but most of what u see and smoke is just a trick of mother nature

I've seen some pretty bomb ass purples come out of Garberville and some nice quality gear out of Sonoma, of course everywhere in the bay/norcal produces some great stuff but standards can raise high when youve grown up smokin in Cali.

Santa Cruz is rarely mentioned but has been killin it for decades now. I think the hardcore localism has something to do with it lacking the buzz that other norcal counties get but sc has a very old and significant cannabis history that seems to get overlooked, or maybe Im wrong and it does get respect?

All I know is when the Colombian Gold and the Buddha Stick, Ti. etc. You get the idea. Any hows when we agreed to fork the $10 or $15 per g. It was the Humboldt dank purple's we were introduced to. Since being in the East Bay "Mission San Jose District" Everything that came out of the Triangle Was the fucking bomb. Trinity seemed a little rushed to get their product out. Shit had a lot of potential. Any way before the shit spread everywhere. Shops. lots of inside grown. The shit to be has was always Humboldt and Santa Cruse Mountains. The people that live there are all about the Bud! And know their Shit. I believe some of the best shit on this earth comes from this Beautiful Area

Remember coming up with the name rainbow purple on the way to Oakland that one fine cold ass morning in Humboldt.I just had a few runs but enough of a taste to say that you are truly the one who spent the time and effort checking out alot of bud from alot of growers untiln you found the cradle of Grandaddy,Rainbow purple,Urkle,and Gods Gift.They allow you to do what you do best,Market medical cannabis.You were up there first and Larry,Mike and alot of other collectives followed suit after you.You were the one who had a line out the door at 1727,nad they called you the black sheep.That Chris Thompson article and Ignacio De La Fuentes did not help,fuck him!Only you have the longevity to win in the end,and WILL!!I still regret the BS between me and Jason that ended up with me pissed off and leaving.You were in Amsterdam and only know the partial truth,I miss your craziness and the adrenaline rush of a run it was truly a blast,thank you Ken Estes.

I applaud your honesty pollen choker.WE have all learned from our mistakes.The ventilation is a big part of your problem possibly.Truth is sometimes it is just TO HOT to do it when we have a hot summer.The air conditioner only works so well.Then maybe you did not have vented hoods.If you want to read some of my credentials of mistakes check out this GOOGLE SEARCH: TimGiangiobbe OCBC...I have been growing off and on for years.Next year it is ON.I love to make comments it is human nature.I also say to use NEEM oil alot to control the bugs and remember to always flush at the end for at least 3 weeks,unless you just love the taste of nutrients.Then remember NOT TO OVERFEED.More is not always better,and sulphur is a good way to keep control of pests and molds.I also cleaned the surounding areas alot with bleach to keep the fungi and mold count down.I also prefer DIRT.Dirt is forgiving and hydro is more work unless your wicking then it is only an algae problem sometimes.People think it is as easy as planting seeds.Not indoors.Outdoors maybe.Maybe you can get some clones from Kenny for the grandaddy,GOOD LUCK.

I have info on Kens Grandaddy it is from humboldt. I was there when we drove down dirt roads in the search for the best and he turned down a few until he found it, He is a very shrewd bud man. He knows the medicine and the problems associated with growers greed. They take risk therefore......It is from the salmon creek area.....He found it from the native americans they love him and allowed it.He has permission from the originator who shall remain a secret. He is native american and that is all you need to know. Ken was my expert witness.. Last summer I bought a QP of organically grown purple urkel in santa cruz and there wasnt a spot of green in the whole bag just dark purple nugs covered in orange hairs it was the most beautiful thing id ever seen, the smell alone gave me a head change and the taste of the smoke was the best id ever had the high comes instant and is cleaner than any other strain i can honestly say the urkel is by far my favorite strain and ive got my medical card in cali, home of the best buds in the world

I am a huge fan of Purple Urkel. I'm an MMJ patient, and here in So Cal, it is always $60 or under (best I've seen was $52, tax included for outdoor). The best is the outdoor grown, no doubt about it. I just bought an eighth of something called Purple Durkel, but it seems like pure Urkel to me. If you have insomnia, this is probably, aside from maybe Master Kush, the best strain for that problem. It'll literally have you asleep in 20 minutes. Unless you're a daily smoker, I would not recommend smoking this in the day time. I don't think it is Lavender, as I have bought Lavender many times, and it was never anywhere near as strong as Purple Urkel. As far as I'm concerned, it's one of my very favorite strains. Very strong indica.

I was born and raised in Mendo and am very familiar with all of the bomb weed grown here. I can tell you first hand that Purple Urkel and Lavender are completely different strains. Mendo folks didn't take a purple clone and simply rename it as is alleged in the above article. Grape Ape and The Purps are different strains too. Of course some idiots will change the name of their dope to whatever the market is calling for, but these true strains are noticeably different in smell, taste, and appearance. And they all both awesome :) The author of this article is wrong, and should have done more research.

Genetics has a bit to do with a plant turning colors. But what I did not see anywhere in this thread was the actual growing technique for changing plants colors.

The temperature of your flowering area needs to be below 55 degrees Farenheit during your dark period. That's it. Just that simple. You'll find that most Sativas turn red, most indicas turn purple and skunks, like the Kyle Kushman NYT photo, turn a blend of both. Color has no effect on potency.

I've grown and smoked Blueberry. I got a nice, blue, purple and red hue out of the buds. Can go quite purple if the temps are low. The hit is second to none, inspirational, motivational and euphoric, good for sex. Flo is another good purple strain i think. I'm a fan of DJ Shorts collection. Happy toking

Cali strains have always impressed me. But what does it matter whether a breeder is using his/her closet to breed?
Good genetics and proper breeding methods are the same all across the board. Not taking the side of anyone here, just saying people shouldn't critic another breeder unless the genetics produced are absoluty shite.

Seriously, I enoy a quality purp strain as much as the next guy. Purple Kush is my fav or the purps. Awesome Grape skittles and Kush taste and lovely chunky buds. HOWEVER, I can find indicas everywhere, maybe not the qualty of Purp Kush but still. Pass the HAZE please!! I'll take a heady HAZE any and everyday of the week. So this begs the question..Wheres the Purple Haze at. I cant find one anywhere. I'm looking for a some bud with blue-ish , purple-ish hues, a bit of grape flavor and the rest and nice HAZy Headie high! Now can someone point me in the right direction. Mind you i am NOT a beginner or a hack. Just a concerned toker who can find the real deal, true Purple Haze. Go to Cali for the worlds best. I have never posted on before but one thing I have done is fire up all these strains and I can tell you they are NOT the same. They certainly are all purple and may have similar genetic lineages, but differences are very apparent when you compare and smoke these strains. Misinformation is bad for the brain cells. If anyone knows anything about these new LED growlights fill a homey in. I'm off to enjoy some Island Sweet Skunk and maybe a little OG kief to invigorate the mind.

well on thing is for sure ive seen this purple urkle and a tooty fruity mother plant side by side both ready for harvest came back and smoked half a gram of purple urkel and half a gram of tooty fruity to see if they were the same strain and this is the results that we came up with first ill say the tooty fruity then the purple urkel the fruity tooty and the urk smelled almost alike however the fruity had somewhat more of a sweeter taste and a mellower smell along with the up high of the tooty fruity however the purple urkel gave somewhat of a stoned feeling but with the up high also and the purple urkel taste kinda earthy and was a bit more sticky than the fruity tooty but the fruity toothad more trichomes than the urkel but the urkel had a much more intense high i know these plants are the strain he had they were marked on the thingas but more so he is a medical marijuana patient from colorado so if this helps im sure it wont but im high so i wanted to say something so if this helps lol

It is a very nice sort of all encompassing video that will quickly and painlessly "bring you up to speed" Then you will know with assurance that you understand what everyone is talking about! MendoMadness is right Urkel and Lavender are not the same bud. I to live in the heart of Mendo, and have grown both in and out. Urkel is sweeter and a little better smoke. Lavender yeilds twice as much. All in all Lavender is better. I dont grow the kushes because they dont yeild either.

Mr. Grapes...Like Moldy said, buy a book or just read a little online. I wanted to grow my own for years before I finally said screw it, I'm doin' it. I bought a used 250w light for $99, 4- 2 gallon square plastic pots, a fan and some nutrients, one of those liquid ph tester kits for$7-8 bucks, some ph up/down and some good organic soil, 2 bricks of coco to mix in, sprouted some beans in the paper towel, planted them in some peat pellets, transferred them into 16oz plastic cups and stumbled over myself and my methods for 3-4 months trying not to kill them. They got root bound, heat stressed, overfed, underwatered, and in my mind, should've died. All rookie mistakes, but I ended up with a nice little stash that lasted through 'til my next harvest from the 6 clones that I took that actually lived(I now swear by Dip n Grow). You can do it man. But beware, once you grow your first batch, you'll be hooked. Then you can start getting more technical. Just my opinion, that's how it happend for me. Good luck.

i live in the heart of mendo and i no that urkel is not the same strain as lavender I have grown them both in and out.The urkel will grow pretty quick same with the lavender,the only purple strain i wasn't impressed with growing was the purple kush, super great flavor and nice smoke just not to high of a producer for me, but the urkel and lavender i have had some monsters of them out doors produceing 3-5 lbs per plant.

So unlike many others online who act like sheep when it comes to whom they like or dislike, I decide for myself after I grow out there gear. I don't have to like DJ to enjoy BB, or Rez to like his SD, nor Sub to think Vortex kicks ass.

I'm not a huge fan of Sam Walton, but walmart sells food at good prices and I buy them. Ray Kroc wasn't a friend of mine, but I love McDonald's fries and I think Bobby Black is an ass, but next month I'll buy HTimes.

That's just the way I feel about things. Misrepresentation of gear or herms will cause me to not buy seed from certain breeders. Sub, Bog, Reef,etc: have all been accused of this to the best of my knowledge, but they're gear has shown me otherwise. If I grow Lifesaver tomorrow and it herms everywhere I'll tell everyone I know, but that doesn't mean I won't grow sourbubble. Everyone has to form an opinion: as far as whether or not Sub misquoted etc WTR, I have mine:)

I can't speak for Sub klyke, but in that thread that no longer exists he basically said that the article wasn't his best. That he rushed when putting it together, but that he only took the info he'd been given by WTR and others because he hadn't grown all those strains. He also mentioned the chat going on over here, which led me here and he said that he wouldn't be able to change WTRs' mind so it was pointless arguing. I completely agree with him, because this chat is how many posts long and WTR feels the same, as does ELK, as does, Sub, as does Icysurfer, as does Mysta, as do I.
These points of view will not be swayed anyway so it's a waste at this point to continue with it. As far as bad karma with seeds; I feel what you're saying, but there isn't any bad karma if you agree with me. If you agree with WTR then maybe you think so, but that's for you to decide. At the end of the day you felt JTR was a nice strain as do I. I also happen to feel that there are several other TGA strains that kick ass.
Some ppl dislike/orderline hate all breeders and I'm not one of them. If you look at Farmer Johns post below, you'll see that he dislikes Sub, Rez, and Bog to name a few. There are thousands of satisfied customers who have grown their gear. I'm not a huge fan of rez's personality, but the gear I have sampled for the most part was good.

He may not have the best karma surroinding him, but that wouldn't stop me from growing SD IBL for example; I'm just not paying 150 haha!

About the strains in that article probbaly not; that's why if you read any of the threads that he quoted info from you would know he was asking questions because he didn't know the answers After being informed by WTR and others he figured he now does know and so he writes the article. It kills me because almost all the info you guys are arguing about is speculation. No science behind saying this strain is or isn't this strain, just hearsay and speculation. 90% of the ppl posting right here have never grown these strains, you're just listening to whomever sounds like they know what their talking about. I'm guilty of it too, but I admit it and in 3 years half of the info that WTR dug up researched etc could be proven wrong. Then you'll all follow the next guy. Grow the gear for yourself!

Incidentally, this is the same mag I first learned how to grow from back in the 80's, pre-internet. Now remember, I stirred the pot by simpley writing fact. You do not think for a minute WTR is correct in being pissed? Just reread subfool's responses at the onset of this thread, and notice he hasn't come back, or at least at his normal handle. The fact is he is a scam artist who got his start from an underground group of pioneering internet grower's, where the mantra was everyone shared and no one would commercialize the "gifts" for profit. Hmmmm, guess what Subfool went and did. Now you get to see his "greatly enhanced" genetics on every website in the form of spam. "Hey you guys should really try this one." Bought a pack of mixed sativa from the sativa seed bank a few years ago. Grew out a male and made some seeds. One of the pheno's starts turning purple 3 weeks in. Smells kinda like grape bubble yum. Now I got the real purple shit and niether me or any of my friends give a crap about any other purple weed because we know exactly where my sticky icky came from...my seeds, and my closet. I don't know any of you, but it sure seems like some of you need to just relax and smoke a fatty. Who gives a shit anyway?

Finally, the Mendocino Lavender, aka Humboldt Lavender, is absolutely a different cut than Urkle. Its a relatively newer cut only been around 4 or so years. 3 years ago it was in every Bay area club as Lavender and being substituted for Urkle, until the "real" urkle filled the clubs. Its actually a really good cut both in and out. Some say its a pheno of Soma's gear, but have never nailed down the absolute fact.

Now, by no means am i a connoissuer, but im a fairly dedicated smoker, and im originally from Oakland, California,(living in Denver now) so i can tell you that in northern CA., quite a fair amount of the buds being grown sold and smoked are different strains of pruple mary. from whole plants that are entirely dark purple from top to bottom to beautiful ladies with bright green leaves and really light lavender buds. there are some reall big time dedicated growers in the SanFransisco Bay Area, no doubt about it. and that makes for some once in a lifetime smoking experiences. any ganja lovers looking to take smoking road trip, i would highly suggest looking into a vacation to the Bay.

The only problem with the purple pheno types are that they are mostly recessive and that a purple strain can be made from any plant if you breed it with the right partner. You may get a cutting from a local dispencery, mate it with a male, then backross your offspring for 4 or 5 generations and if you are lucky you will basically have seed stock of the clone. That is if the genetic lottery is write.

gives his Telegraph dispensery credit in its Jan 2007 issue- "The Story of Grandaddy Purple".
Ken is well-connected in Humboldt County and probably sourced it from the originators.
