Organic gardening and organics in general have been in vogue for the last few years. US organic-food sales have grown between 17 and 21 percent each year since 1997, and not only have the sales increased, but prices have increased as well. Take a look in your local supermarket and see how much more they’re asking for the organic produce. Could it be that produce grown using organic techniques is better than conventional produce? Could it possibly be healthier and better-tasting? You bet!

“Organic,” to us, means the use of natural, unrefined sources of nutrition for our plants. It also means natural pest control. Organically grown buds are no different from organically grown produce: They’re healthier to smoke and have a much better flavor and aroma. You might get big, huge buds using chemical fertilizers, but are they the best buds you could have produced? That answer is going to vary from grower to grower, but I can tell you with definite certainty: I want the cleanest, best-tasting smoke I can possibly get.

Why microbes?
A great deal of attention is paid to the conditions under which a plant is grown—humidity, temperature, light—but little attention is paid to the life under the soil line. If we focus underground, we’ll have a better understanding of what this plant truly needs. Organic growers have a different approach to growing: Feed the soil, not the plant.

In an organic environment, the root zone is buzzing with activity. Our plants encourage microbes in the soil, just as the microbes encourage plant growth. Plants will release a small amount of their own nutrient supply in order to feed the microbes. In return for the nutrition obtained from the plant’s roots, microbes produce chemicals that stimulate plant growth or protect the plant from insect attack, including auxins, enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and antibiotics. Only with the aid of these little helpers can complex molecules pass from the soil into plant cells with minimal change to chemical structure. There’s a symbiotic relationship that exists between the soil and the plant when we use organic techniques.

hey binky fertilizer isn't as much a threat to our health directly but due to farmers over using, our environment is being compromised- specifically our water sources. Algea blooms(putrification is a good example and remember that trace elements in fertilizer are mostly metals and there is a thing called mineral magnification- look it up. To Bopyanker, If you are a first time grower, than you have lots to learn but there are so many different opinions about it. Are you sure you have a bug or mite or mildew or mold. Neem oil and Einstein oils are what most people us to kill bugs or mold or mildew. I hate the stuff because it does leave an aftertaste. If your plant is still in the vegetative state, than the biorganic stuff may be ok. Don't use any of the stuff unless you absolutely need to. Buy lady bugs and preying mantus also work. I found some new stuff that I only used once for clones I bought with very little spinkling of mildew. I cut off all that I could and used a product for the first time called Serenade Garden Disease control by AGRA QUEST and that was that. I also gave them Humtea and super thrive. Of cours there is alot of sun indoors now and they are so very happy. No more bugs. You will make a few mistakes along the way but it can get better. Hope I helped. Peace Out.

Binky is right. I know first hand that too much is definitely not good, esp. too much Nitrogen. I use 3/4 of the amount suggested to use on the plants because I am so afraid of toxicity. Chicken Manure is the worst. If it is not mixed correctly it will ruin your entire crop.
I do not know anything about the hydroponic way. I only grow in soil. I do know that the chlorine in the water is not as good for the plants and that is why we use well water.
If you read high times, you can get a myriad of info. Everyone has a different opinion and you must try what you think is best for your environment and climate. So many books out there to read. Experience is the answer. We are growing Old grand daddy this year also. It is popular in the bay area. NY Deisle is popular right now but it depends are weither you like sativa or indicas. If it is done right, it is all good.

Before people start talking about the toxic effects of non organic weed, they should know something about the constituients of the material they are smoking. Plants will only utilise (uptake)as much nutrient as they can tolerate, after this growth is slowed and chemical taste and content can be slightly increased. Levels too high will produce toxicity and injure the plant. High nitrogen "natural" fertilisers like chicken shit can kill plants if over applied. Weather you feed a plant from digested plant material like compost or from "synthetic" fertilisers which are the pure element mined out of the ground (thank you mother nature, balance is the key. Use all the tools we have been given in a responsible manner. Giggle.

This is not a shroom article so stay on the subject of organic vs non organic. I start out growing with Fox Farm Soil, because it is about $10-$11 a bag. Then I go to Flower Power because it has the highest nutrients. The down side is that it is so high in nutrients that when it is still in the bag (not planted yet) the soil can mold. It is $13-$15 a bag. The legal clubs in CA want strictly organic if possible. If you do not think there is a difference, that is a huge error. It is a must to grow organic because the lungs are the only thing that knows the difference. Remember, this stuff is inhaled. I have known several people that died from the additives used in the growers soil. It took 5 years for her to die. It wasn't from the MJ. These kids do not realize that in is very important to smoke the very best for your lungs sake. Eventually it can catch up with you.

Like all major metropolitan areas, Houston has everything from the dankest dank to the dirtiest shwag. There is always a steady supply of shwag at cheap prices, so if you are not a conosour, it is a cheap place to have a consistant supply of joints. Shwag in the North is not as good, comes in skimpy sacks, and you usualy pay mids prices for it. However, the situation is flipped for Nuggs. Houston usualy pays 10 bucks more on an eigth for lesser quality cronic. As you know, it is all geographical, with areas closest to Canada and College towns getting an influx of dank and areas closer to Mexico and hick comunities getting an influx of shwag. I have gotten some incredable Dank in houston before, but it is not as easy to find, and usualy not as cheap as in Colorado, or the North East. *Somebody in Pasadena sell me some Orange Kush!!!*

Thanks for the info, I have thought of getting a trim tool, I use good scissors now, which works for me, cause I usually deal with less than 10 pounds. The freezer is great when mold is a real risk. Sorry, I have no experience with the cross you mentioned. I have grow many varieties, some unknown seed from purchased weed, some bought seed. I have yet to produce pot that I don't like, but , not to brag, I am pretty good at growing. I am sure that inferior genetics can produce crap, but I have yet to be so unlucky. Site selection is my strong point. I have areas with full south exposure with rich moist soil on a rivers flood plain. I only water 3 or 4 times, and regularly produce 8 footers, yielding a pound apeice often. . For the guy wondering about light heigths, I put flourescents 1 to 2 inches above plants for propagation. I dont use hps(I am outdoor), but know they are hot. I would say 14 to 16 vinches with a good fan. Hope someone with more indoor exp. will answer this for you.

In the area I grow in (the Emerald Triangle)I am what you call a very light weight in comparison to them. I learned so much info from the pros. Thanks for the freezer info. I already do that with the shake and the cold water peanut butter hash is the result. Do you know anything about Bubble gum X with Skunk? I bought 10 of them for $10 at a well reputed club. Also bough Blue Burmese and blue Mystic and Alphani goo. Anyone know about these strains. I know Blueberry and Alphgani strains always have Indica male or female.

I have faced cold temps. at harvest, and have lost large amounts of bud to mold. Picking a plant that finishes at the right time will help, that is they finish before too much cold. When faced with the prospect of mold, I harvested everything, bagged whole plants(cut to a workable size, and put them in the freezer. This let me cure them at my leisure. Taste was compromised a little, as the chlorophyll didn't get the chance to degrade, but the end product was still very acceptable. The freezing process dramatically reduced smell at drying time and no smell was detectable outside the freezer, but I ended up eating pot flavored steak for a while. A fair trade to save pounds of good outdoor.

We lost 2 years of our lives because of 1)seed out moldy crop and 2)Cold harvest time. I agree with binky,about the seeds. Read the Ask Ed book or canniblble or Book of Buds 1 and 2. So Many books out there and so many different opinions. Last year, we finally grew some unreal blueberry, white widow and old grand daddy. Important thing,of all, is the best seeds. It is not legal to buy seeds if you are in the US. Fortunately, for me I really do have the best of both worlds. I livein the the Bay area( not San Francisco)and have a growers permit and a card. We call MJ medicine and not marijuana. We grow up north in the boonies and I love both worlds. It feels good to get away from people when you have to deal with them for 6 months out of the year.Note, soil is extremly important. Our plants grow 13 feet and taller. Some only grow 6 feet. Organic is the only way to grow, plus we use well water, no chlorinated water. Seeds, soil , light and knowing when to harvest are all important and if anyone thinks this is an easy process, they have never grown an outdoor, greenhouse crop. Anything could happen. If you have all of the above then and only then can you grow a good crop. I smoked for 3o years before I knew what was all involved. And it is expensive to grow organic but it is the best for your health.

Grow it until it turns good? How do u do that? The seeds you have from crap weed may be genetically inferior, meaning that even optimim growing conditions will produce mediochre weed. Or, they may be a decent strain grown under shitty conditions. They may produce good pot(probably)if they are treated properly. Are u in the US or Canada? Seeds are still fairly easy to get in Canada(bought skunk#1 and Durban Poison 2 weeks ago from sacred seed in Toronto. If u a yank, I don't know what to tell you.

Guano, here we are:
If growing with clones, sex should not be an issue. If started with seed, you must watch closely and cukk males, unless you want seed. you can grow a second garden far away for seed production. Choose a site that is basically flooded at peak spring water flow. A month later it will still be good and moist. River flood plains are a good choice. Light is ESSENTIAL. You want a good strong sun from the South. That means plants should be at least 20 feet from shade fron the north. Dig holes big, and work the soil well. This increses moisture retention and root penetration. At least a foot and a half deep and wide with well worked soil. Spagnum is a good addative for water retention.
Very important! Keep your mouth shut and don't show it off.
I have cut plants at maturity and hung them un the sun to partially dry. This gets rid of a lot of stink when finising the drying and removes chlorophyll, which reacts with sunlight. This makes for smooth smoke.
For feed I use a higher nitrogen fertiliser until sex appears and then go to a 10 30 10 or something similar, augmented with blood or bone meal. I hope the guy below talking bout mad cow was joking, else he needs a slap. K thats all for now. I welcome questions of an educated nature, and am sure my buddy and his dad from nyc will help me answer them. Giggle

by the way, Hydro and aeroponics are accomplished using no soil at all. Roots grow and are contained in pipes filled with water and nasty chemicals. If your talking about organic pot, true organic pot is grown outdoor in the ground(dig a hole if you wish and use good soil but it's not required. Fetilizers should only be used to increase yield and potentcy, they are not required. It might not be as good as it could be, but it still is a weed, grows in just about everything. the last three fertilizers serious grower said are fine, i know from experience.

Let me just make some impartial yet very true statements about both as well as a little info on what is "organic" pot.

Here's the simple facts...
Organics is the art of growing without man-made fertilizers.

In 5 gallon pots...

1/2 Full FoxFarm Ocean Mix

1/4 part worm castings

1/4 part coconut coir

2 tablespoons fine dolomite lime

1/2 cup bat guano

1/2 cup seabird guano

1/2 cup chicken guano

Mix all together in a bigger bin than the pot...then add when fully mixed.

First two and a half weeks water every 3-5 days with brown or green kelp. For the next 3 weeks use or make bat guano tea. The last two weeks should be pure water.

Thats a very simple organic formula that works as well as any fertilizers out there. This is just a general post for those who truly grow. I am assuming that you know all the other details.(My plants are 18 inches when induced to flower and are about 3 1/2 4 1/2 feet tall when done...I use a bend method and get about 70 grams a plant)(600 or 1000 watt lights)

Now, yes organics is messy and much more time consuming and more expensive to produce. Those are facts. It is also a fact that organic pot smells better taste better is much healthier and overall, is the true choice a pot conosouir. With that said, organic pot is for personal use, chemically grown pot is sold...it's thats simple...

Just for you know-it-alls out there, I know that there are hydro-organic mixes out there and yes they work. Still there are no man-made chemicals present in those mixes so truly it still is organic.

So, what the hell is organic anyway? No synthetic insecticide, no artificial (whatever that is) fertiliser, grown in soil or soiless? Can hydroponics be"organic"? (of course) Is it ok to use minerals extracted from the earth to fertilise plants? That is what commercially used fertilisers are. Can we use naturally based insecticides like pyrethrin and neem and nicotine irresponsibly, even though they have the potential to cause harm? Just because something is "natural" does not mean it is safe, and something "processesd" is not necessarily bad. That is an easy way to cop out and be comfortable in ignorance with regards to the real issues. Just my rant. Giggle

organic is the way to go, unless your a cash crop producer, then hydroponics with lots of nasty chemicals will incease yields substatially, but at the cost of inhaling those chemicals when burned. I prefer sea bird and bat guano. If you use an expensive soil, like black gold, and your growing outdoors, that might be all you need, plus lots o water. Tasty organic bud is the best smoke, but if cooking pot is your method of getting stoned, i would recommend hydro bud with those nasty chemicals.

true, you can find good herb anywhere with the rite hook ups. where i live in ontario(canada) just about anybody can find a half ounce for about 90$. normally some good comercial northern lights or skunk. if u have hookups u can get the same amount of kush for about 120$ wich is just as good if not beter then ANYTHING in amsterdam.

I'm on big Island (Hawaii) and da organics out here are definately tastey. but with organics you have no control. you can intoduce the same microbes and give exact amounts of nutirents with hydro... and no need to always wonder what you current NPK levels are. Organics are overrated

Can any body tell me the difference between fertilising with appropriate levels of concentrated fertiliser and with "organic" feed? Just because something is "organic" does not make it inherently safe.Do you think Datura, Coca or hellbane are "safe"?
Worm castings, Guano or other naturally sourced soil amendments contain exactly the same nutrients as mined fertilisers. Thats right, mined. Most commercial fertilisers begin as deposits in the earth that are mined and processed to concentrates. Yes, organic amendments usually have organic constituents that improve drainage and soil structure, but so do spagnum and perlite, which are readily available as soil amendments to improve drainage and structure. When it comes to fungal and insect control, that is another matter. These are powerful chemicals that can impact the human body in adverse ways, but are powerful tools that should be used sparingly and safely. I grow things for a living, and often see the misconception that organic is safe, and non organic is dangerous. I do grow without chemical pesticides whenever possible, which is most of the time, but I , like most professional farmers sometimes resort to chemical alternatives when absolutely necessary. They are very expensive, and the decision to apply is not taken lightly. Many of the organically derived pesticides like neem and pyrethrins are dangerous as well when not used appropriately. Professionals first assess risk and need and act accordingly. I do, however, use commercial fertilisers often, as they are standardised (can be applied accurately with respect to chemical composition)and effective. Just my take on things. Organic does not mean safe, and non organic does not mean dangerous.
