INTEGRITY
A few or more issues back, there was an “article” in your mag about a dude named Jay Generation talking about his favorite Northwest strains. Turns out it was a huge advertisement about his company, Next Generation, and their newest strain, Bonkers.A couple of issues back, Jorge Cervantes tells us about Next Generation and how badass they are and to check out to greenlifeseeds.com. He says it’s a trusted site. So I send them $180 dollars for the Next Generation outdoor special.
I went to the Web site a few days ago, only to learn that it “couldn’t be found,” and now when you go there, it’s something completely different. When a mag starts passing advertisements off as articles, that’s when it’s time to stop subscribing to that weak-ass mag.
I included my address to show that I am a subscriber, and because I wanted you to know who was …READ MORE

MOVE TO AMSTERDAM
How does one go about moving to Amsterdam and becoming a coffeeshop employee or a grower/tester for HIGH TIMES? How do I do what everyone sees in HIGH TIMES?
J. Man
Via Internet
Dear J.,
Find yourself a cheap place to stay and visit as many coffeeshops as you can to ask for a job. Make sure you have a good résumé heavy on experience. If you speak several languages, you will increase your chances of employment.Moving to Amsterdam is expensive for Americans because of the exchange rate: It takes $1.50 to equal one euro. The dollar has been sliding against the euro and most other currencies since the Bush administration came to power in America. Furthermore, Amsterdam is not the same city that it was in the 1990s. There has been a big movement to close down illegal coffeeshops—those without legal permits—and to shut down any that do not conform strictly to the …READ MORE

Compassionate Grower
I run a grow operation for a compassion clinic. Recently, I planted six germinated seeds and threw them in the dark, but they did not come up. Then I put them under two small desk-lamp fluorescents. It is Day 4 and no seeds have come up yet. Is there a problem with my setup? I’ve been using 24 hours of light a day, and the garden is bordered with Mylar. It gets pretty hot in there. The lights are providing warmth and lumens. Also, I found a small worm about a millimeter long and removed it.
T.
Via Internet
Dear T.,
Germinated seeds are very delicate and should be “placed” in the dark rather than “thrown.” Your choice of language indicates rough handling of the germinated seed. You also say that it “gets pretty hot,” but you don’t say how hot. The ideal atmospheric temperature range for germinating seed is 78ºF to 80ºF. Keep the soil a few degrees warmer to speed root …READ MOREtags: 139 « add a comment

Sativa for Spring
I live in the southeastern U.S. What strain of sativa would be my best bet for getting the highest quality as well as the heaviest yield? I see crosses of G-13 with various strains—is it possible to obtain G-13 that hasn’t been crossed in seed form? Everything I’ve read about these crosses says that they’re disappointing in terms of yield. Would the strain Kalichakra give me a heavy yield as well as high quality with the climatic conditions we have here in the Southeast?
Jimbo
Via Internet
Dear Jimbo,
I’ve seen “pure” G-13 advertised for sale at marijuanagenetics.com, but I don’t know the company or the owner. Mandala Seeds is a reputable company, and everything I know about Kalichakra says that it’s a good yielder. There are several other sativa crosses that would also do very well in your climate. A few years ago, I spent time in Colombia researching an article on …READ MOREtags: 55 « add a comment

Fertilizer
I have your Bible and first DVD, but what nutrients do you recommend? What are the nutrients and supplements that are must-haves, in your opinion, in order to provide top-notch harvests?
Catica
Via Internet
Dear Catica,
There are more nutrients on the market than I can name, and many of them will suit your plants’ needs. Look for the “Guaranteed Analysis” on the fertilizer package and make sure that it contains all necessary macro- and micro-nutrients: nitrogen (N), potassium (P), phosphorus (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sulfur (S), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), boron (B), copper (Cu) and molybdenum (Mb).
Chemical-based fertilizers are a mix of mineral salts. Organic fertilizers contain the same elements as chemical-based fertilizers but in an organic form, meaning they have not been chemically altered. There are different purities and grades of ingredients. Premium fertilizers …READ MOREtags: 48 « add a comment

HPS or Metal Halide?
Bro, I love your work—keep rollin’. Which are better for me, metal halide (MH) or high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights? My growing spaces are 2’ x 3’ x 6’ and 2’ x 4’ x 6’. Should I use a 250- or a 400-watt lamp?
Please help.
EZ Greens
Dear EZ Greens,
Both grow spaces are quite small, so your biggest concern should be heat buildup and possibly humidity. Deal with heat buildup by installing a good vent fan that will evacuate air fast enough to keep the garden temperature around 75°F during the day and no less than 5 to 10 degrees cooler at night. The humidity levels should run at about 60% to 65% in the vegetative room and stay around 50% in the flowering room. Regardless of the lamp you choose, it should have a remote ballast—which generates extra heat—that can be placed outside the growroom. Also, be sure to select the most efficient reflective …READ MOREtags: 82 « add a comment

The HIGH TIMES film crew and I tripped around Spain last year to shoot some of my favorite gardens for Jorge Cervantes’ Ultimate Grow DVD #2. This insider’s trip to Spanish growrooms, greenhouses and backyard and guerrilla gardens was so interesting and fun that we decided to share a few exclusive details about 10 of the 30 gardens (that’s all the space we have) that we visited for the shoot.
A little background on cannabis growing in Spain will help you understand the importance of Spanish cannabis cultivation for North America and why it has taken off here. Spanish law allows people to grow at home for their own personal consumption, as long as it doesn’t bother the neighbors. (But no buying or selling—that’s where the punishment applies.) The law is applied haphazardly, with some areas, such as Catalonia and Basque country, more liberal (although even within these areas, some communities …READ MOREtags: 11 « add a comment

MOVING INDOORS
I have been growing outdoors now for about five years, but I keep cuttings from my plants indoors in the winter. I want to start a small growroom indoors and switch from dirt to hydro. What system would be the best for me? I bought a clone machine that suspends the cuttings in a neoprene disk. Once they root, how do I put them in the garden? I only have two types of plants, Diesel and Kush. Which one will thrive better indoors with hydro?
John
Dear John,
A small growroom is an excellent idea. The hydroponic system you choose will really depend upon your needs and space. First, you need to determine the growroom’s size and how many watts of light will be used. For example, if you are able to section off two separate areas in your growroom—a vegetative room for mothers, clones and vegetative plants, and a flowering room—the veg room will need a 250- to 400-watt metal halide (MH) lamp that will be on for 18 to 24 …READ MOREtags: 64 « add a comment

Harvest!
When do I harvest? Everybody tells me to wait till it freezes, but I don’t know—maybe I should harvest sooner. I live in Tucson, AZ, and even though we are at a high elevation, it doesn’t freeze here until late October. What should I do?
Desert Owl
Dear Desert Owl,
Harvest when the plants are ready to harvest; pay attention to what your plants tell you. Unless a very bad storm is coming that would blow them over and beat them with raindrops, or unless an impending freeze is at hand, harvest your plants when they’re ready. There are five distinct types of plants that are ready at five different times. Use the information below as a guideline.
For example, Hash Plant, Afghani, Hindu Kush, etc., finish in mid- to late August. The yield and potency are high, and so is the fragrance! When nurtured by an experienced grower, these strains are thick …READ MOREtags: 58 « add a comment

NARCOCORRIDAS AND GREENHOUSES IN MEXICO

Story & photos by Jorge Cervantes
MEXICO
The 737 penetrated the dense haze of smog ahead. Sometime later, I could see the sprawling urban area—some 3,700 square miles (9,500 kilometers) in all, containing more than 20 million people—nestled in Anáhuac, the Valley of Mexico. I have always known it as D.F. (Distrito Federal) or, simply, as Mexico.
Mexico City is located 7,350 feet (2,240 meters) above sea level at the 20th Parallel. On the globe, it is situated south of Honolulu, HI—and a whole lot higher!
As we touched down at Benito Juarez International Airport, many memories raced through my mind of my former life as a university student in the 1970’s. Ah, yes, the good old days—when we overthrew the University of the Américas, and a key of Popo Blue sensimilla cost $150 to $200. But this trip to Mexico would be much different than in those bygone days. Sure, I would see the usual …READ MOREtags: 70 « add a comment

USDA and Seeds
I purchased 10 seeds last month. While I was waiting for my seeds, I set up my growroom—then I got my package, but no seeds. The USDA opened the envelope and destroyed them and put a USDA letter in their place. What can I do to stop that from happening again? Not only did I not get my seeds, but I’m out $70. Where can I go to purchase more seeds, maybe from somewhere in the States?
Erik
Via Internet
Dear Erik,
You can thank your lucky stars that your only loss was the $70. Quit bitching—unless you’re a state-sanctioned medical patient growing your own medicine, or a state-sanctioned caregiver growing medicine for a patient, “manufacturing” the controlled substance “cannabis” in America, Land of the Free, is illegal. Marijuana gardeners are arrested every day, and many more of them are sitting in jail right now. Except …READ MOREtags: 126 « add a comment

PRUNING
Does topping the main bud slow down plant growth? Does it affect other buds and knock them back from their full potential? I’m talking about 14’’ to 16’’ sativas that are in the last two months of flowering.
Zot
Christchurch, New Zealand
Dear Zot,
Pruning or topping plants redirects their growth hormones. By pruning selectively, you manipulate auxin hormone levels in branch and flower tips. Removing a branch or branch tip causes hormonal balances to shift. Cutting the meristem (top growth tip) of a cannabis plant will diffuse hormones (auxins) and cause greater concentrations in lower branch tips, which will cause lower buds to gain girth and weight.
Always use clean instruments when pruning. A sharp pair of pruners will work best in this case. Sanitize clippers and blades between cuts by dipping in rubbing alcohol. After pruning …READ MOREtags: 201 « add a comment

SPIRAL FLUORESCENTS
I have a female plant that just went into a 12/12-hour day/night schedule and has gone into pre-flowering. I am using a regular fluorescent lightbulb (the spiral kind). How long do you think it will be until I start to see buds? How much do you think I will yield? My plant has six tops and is about 2.5 feet tall.
-Stam the Sativa
Dear Stam,
Male and female cannabis plants start pre-flowering after about two months of growth, regardless of the photoperiod—that is, they develop either male or female pre-flowers in spite of the hours of light per day they receive. Even if the plants receive 24 hours of light and no darkness, they will still produce pre-flowers. Pre-flowers grow from the third and fourth internodes and other branch unions. A female pre-flower has a small seed bract with two white pistils protruding from the top. A male pre-flower starts as a small nub …READ MOREtags: 146 « add a comment

Wet Buds!
I just picked up some Master Kush bud and it still feels a little moist, like it hasn’t dried all the way. Everyone says the nuggies should be dense stinky. How can I cure it myself and get the max potency out of it?
Tim
Via Internet
Dear Tim,
You bought wet dope—something all too common in America! About 75% of the weight of a bud is water; wet buds weigh more, and that’s why they sell them that way. You will need to let the bud dry out slowly over a few more days. I like to wrap it in a sheet of newspaper or put it in a paper bag and set it in a dry place. Do not set it in the sun, on the radiator, or somewhere overly warm: Heat, air and friction from fondling hands all degrade cannabis potency, so avoid those factors whenever possible. Store drying cannabis on the top of a bookshelf or in a similar place. The newspaper will attract the moisture, and …READ MOREtags: 274 « add a comment

Slap Plants Around
Your great book says that slapping my plants around will make them more resinous. Does this mean the better the fight, the higher the buds get you?
Ralph
Via Internet
Dear Ralph,
Slapping plants around may make a demented grower feel superior, smart and dominant, but it's detrimental to plant development and overall resin production. The book says: "Stress can cause plants to produce more resin, but it simultaneously causes odd and/or reduced growth."
For many years, growers claimed that mutilating plants, withholding water, erratic photoperiod regimens, etc., made them produce more and more potent resin. They also claimed that exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light increases resin production. My favorite myth is that driving a spike through the base of the main stem makes plants produce more resin. All of these claims are untrue! The secret to making plants …READ MOREtags: 84 « add a comment
