As the police sirens go off in the distance, we’re burning spliffs on a sunny afternoon in Manhattan with reggae artist Julian Marley. The talented offspring of the legendary Bob Marley, Julian’s releasing his third LP, Awake, which shows noticeable growth on every level—songwriting, arranging and production.
The London-born Marley, whose eclecticism leans closer to older brother Ziggy’s reverent roots rock than younger sibling Damian’s rude-boy toasting, got his break in 1996, at the tender age of 21, when his Lion in the Morning hit the streets. That formative debut was bettered by 2003’s belated follow-up, A Time and Place, and has now been bested by 2009’s masterful Awake.

Story by Jon Forunato
Last August 14, the Dandy Warhols came to New York to perform a song from their new album, Welcome to the Monkey House, on Late Night with Conan O’Brien. But then, at 4:11 p.m., the lights went out. The band, like millions of New Yorkers, spent the rest of the night dealing with the sudden blackout.
"We walked through Times Square with the lights off," says the band’s front man, Courtney Taylor-Taylor. "People were all outside the hotels. Families were on the sidewalks complaining instead of having a good time, which is what we did."
The band ended up at a local watering hole, Siberia, drinking until 5:00 a.m. A month later, the Dandy Warhols are back in New York for two shows at the Bowery Ballroom. It’s 3:00 p.m. the day after the first show, and the Dandys’ diminutive keyboard player, Zia McCabe, is nursing a hangover at the Tribeca Grand Hotel.

Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger discovered Vancouver's bohemian spirit after making a teenage pilgrimage there from his hometown in Alberta to catch Lollapalooza at Thunderbird Stadium in 1992. Shortly after, he formed a band with his bass-playing older brother Mike, guitarist Ryan Peake and drummer Ryan Vikedal.
Following their Canadian-only debut, Curb (recorded with government grant money), Nickelback hit the big time in 1999 with The State. On "Worthy To Say" Kroeger commented on narcs' tendency to do their nasty business in the morning ("They usually come around about 10 o'clock/you could hear 'em/you could tell by the way they knock")."Every fifth home in Vancouver is a grow op," he says. "Drug busts are done first thing when growers are sleeping, because they don't have jobs."
