THE GROW SHOW - CHOOSING THE RIGHT LIGHT

It's obvious that high-intensity discharge lamps (HIDs) are the choice for anyone serious about indoor horticulture. It's also unanimously believed that high-pressure sodium (HPS) is the best overall light when deciding between HPS and metal halide (MH). Lately, I've found myself defending my choice of 600-watt lights over thousands of watts. I'm convinced that 600s are the best option for indoor gardeners.
That more watts or lumens equals higher yields is absolutely true. But bigger isn't always better. Thousand-watt lights are not for amateurs. If your grow space is 150 square feet or more, you'll probably want to utilize 1,000s. But if you're growing primarily for yourself and would like to save electricity, then consider what 600s can do. (Four-hundred-watt lamps are out of the question for any serious bud production.)
Forty percent less heat means that the lights can be 40 percent closer to your plants without …READ MOREtags: 77 « add a comment

THE MAN WHO WOULD CHANGE THE WORLD

Story by Kyle Kushman
Eddy’s ministry sits high on a hill, at the end of a long, winding driveway dotted with signs that say things like, "If We Don’t Know You’re Coming, Stop and Read the Fucking Signs!" A big yellow caution sign reads, "Vietnam Vet: Do Not Startle." Passing these, you reach Eddy’s Multidenominational Ministry of Cannabis and Rastafari, overlooking green pastures and California’s largest natural lake. Beyond that, on a clear day you can see dormant volcano Mt. Konocti. An unmistakable sense of family and serenity envelops the place.
I met Eddy two years ago at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, where he was a fellow speaker at the cultivation seminar. Immediately I felt a kinship to him. He’s long since left behind a life of booze and drugs that he freely admits controlled him. He was ordained a minister in 1997 through the Universal Life Church. A …READ MOREtags: 5 « add a comment

Story by Kyle Kushman
On October 3, 2003, my oldest friend John "Waldo" Cliver passed away in his sleep. He was 39 years old.
Waldo's life and untimely death presents the best argument I can imagine for why cannabis laws must be changed immediately, before this tyranny against the freedom to heal yourself harms or kills one more person.
John was born with spina bifida, a congenital defect that gave him a cleft and partially exposed spinal cord. There was severe neurological damage associated with John’s case, but it spared his mind 100 percent. Suffering from serious internal disorders in addition to the more obvious affliction to his legs and back, he fought every day of his life to be accepted, happy, comfortable, and secure. Sounds like most of us, however the painful and debilitating effects of spina bifida meant the best of times to John would hardly seem bearable to many of us. His digestive tract rarely worked; whenever he …READ MOREtags: 0 « add a comment

Nearly 200,000 people came out to represent the cannabis community at the 13th Annual Hempfest, held August 16 and 17, 2003 in Seattle, Washington. Hempfest boasted a dedicated core staff of 300 who worked all year long to make it possible. In addition, nearly 1,000 volunteers signed up to work in shifts, doing everything from stage crew to first aid to security. Located by Seattle’s waterfront and the serene Puget Sound, this grand venue included six stages for speakers and live music, more than a hundred booths sponsored by private and civic organizations, plus some of the best crafts and food vendors of any festival
Smiling faces of all ages and races convened on beautiful Myrtle Edwards Park at Pier 70 in downtown Seattle. It’s a narrow park nearly a mile long, with grass down the center …READ MORE tags: 0 « add a comment
